I have to agree, hollywood is full of inovation and orginial ideas

death race 2000
star trek
the producers

I don't think i can list 1000+ copycat films from baliwood, in REDuser:weight_lift:

(ok.. no more crap VS hollywood) SDK...SDK...

3 Qs:

1. when i open a RAW digital still in AE, it asks me to "develop" the image, and i'll adjust exposure, WB, etc....

But then I can use it like any other clip. I can apply effects to it, use Color Finesse, etc...

Is that what we assume will happen with R3D clips?

2. Can we import each one into PPRO, and do that same "one light" on import? (Maybe use the same settings on a bunch of clips....) Then edit away.

Later, import the PPRO project into AE, and then grade, enhance, distort, add titles, etc....

3. Is there a way to edit with the 1k QT proxies in PPRO (my machine would not be able to handle 4k), but then easily import the project into AE automatically linking back to the original 4k files? Maybe a little dialogue box pops up on import asking if we wish to continue working with the same files or link to original RED RAW clips......

I know this is speculation for many of us, but maybe some of the RED Team members can answer......

Thanks!

You can edit QT proxys in Premiere Pro on a Mac today. Just as you would in FCP.

I personally just hate QT - to put it mildly - and and if I can avoid it in anyway I can I will. That's why .r3d files native on the timeline is such a thrilling concept to me. The ultimate would of course be to get inside the .r3d wrapper and access the Jpeg 2000 sequence and additional data directly. But I don't think that will happen any time soon.

OT:I've never understood the hatred toward QuickTime. It saves me hours of wasted time on a nearly daily basis. Just today we finished encoding a 9 hour video (yes, one video 9 hours long, it was a training video) as Sorenson Video 3 codec QuickTime. The encode took about 40 hours due to it being a 2 pass encode and Squeeze being SLOW. Upon reviewing the final encode we discovered a patch of bad frames that was in the original and some audio glitches. Within 1 hour I had patched the bad frames swapped them in and swapped out the audio track, all in QuickTime Player Pro. Then I fixed a minor drift in the audio with QT Sync. Then I just re-saved the file as a flattened movie, 5 minutes later I'm ready to go, no re-encode needed. To top it all off the footage I was working with was all encrypted with MediaKeys (a DRM-like technology), no need to re-encrypt. Had we used any other technology, we would have had to blow another 40 hours on a re-encode. And possibly more if find another flaw.

Even functions as simple as trimming footage off the end/beginning/middle of an already compressed/encoded video. Or adding/subtracting multiple audio video tracks. Or merging 29.97 and 23.96 videos into a single file. I've even used it as a quick and dirty subtitler. Always simple, fast, and no re-encoding needed. I run into things like this daily, and on the rare occasion I'm working with AVIs or WMVs instead of QT movies... well that's when the cursing an inferior technology comes out. I just hope Apple doesn't %*# up QuickTime X by removing some of these powerful functions.

Yes, these editing functions of QuickTime Pro are well hidden, but very very powerful and a huge time saver. I highly recommend people learn the true power of QuickTime Pro.

My only problem with Quicktime is that there are still issues with gamma, and they are enough to drive me crazy. Otherwise, I've never had a major issue with it and like you said, once you get under the hood you can do some cool things. But they have been slow on fixing some things that have been a problem for many years.

Hopefully the new Quicktime goes more Pro, rather than more consumer.

I am looking forward to this update to Premier CS3. I keep looking for it. Should we look for it at Adobe.com updates or on the Red Support page?

I don't even think they're that hidden! I like to tease some of the clients I work with that FCP is just a glorified version of Quicktime, which it is, they think it's an insult when really they should take it as a compliment.

I think that anyone who has anything to do even remotely with A/V should have quicktime Pro. It'll be awesome if the new version is significantly more Pro (as others have said.)

True enough. And yes, don't even get me started on gamma and/or colorsync.

Amen to that!

Conceptually, I like Quicktime - it's a container format, and I like what Apple has done with the player for the most part.

My frustration with Qt is working around the broken bits that, release after release, remain broken - not to mention all the things that QT breaks with each release.

And I keep waiting for the ugrade that fixes all this to arrive. It's like waiting for Godot...

The whole thought of wrapping a format like h.264 is wrong to me. In any wrapper on any platform. I don't even know where to start with QT. Gamma issues, updates that renders other softwares useless, updates that kills hardware permanently (remember when QT6 killed FW disks anyone?), just the fact that QT is part of the core in OSX, corrupt QT media...

Nice timing this. I was just purchasing Premier Pro anyway, as it's the cheapest way to purchase Encore, currently the only decent DVD AND Blu-RAY mastering tool. Now I may actually install PPro as well - I've heard a lot of good things about real-time performance....

Any chance we'll get the plug-in today? Jim made the announcement on the 30th, today is the seventh day (I know that it was a general statement and not a promise, so I can understand if you need more time).

I just really really want to be able to start messing with r3d files on my Vista x64 machine outside of Redcine.

It's been a week hasn't it? Not that I'm counting, hanging on every second or anything....:whistling:

We are all very patient here - and have no problem turning five days into a week if it fits our needs ;)

Mr Jannard created this thread 07-31-2008, 01:15 AM. So lets give them two more days - and then we can officially start the pistol whipping...

Within a week, RED R3D files will open natively in CS3 Premiere Pro and After Effects.

Jim

That shows on the 30th here in america. I know it was last Wednesday because (I'm joking, well, maybe not) I'll always remember where I was the moment that I found out that Premiere Pro was going to support Red better than FCP :)

Apologize to cut the flow of the post. But wanted to say how exciting and truly amazing news this is!
Not only the flow will be so comfortable for us Adobe users, but the shear amount of fantastic hardware such as graphic cards that have full support for the PC users in the adobe environment which will now fashion RAW RED images support is a great milestone to the RED PC users workflow. Thank You RED!!!
