As many are starting to shift from FCP to Premiere Pro (myself included) we are seeing a major issue with moving projects from PP5.5 into Davinci 8. This has to do with PP only talking FCP XML v4, and Davinci 8 only talking FCP XML v5. And using FCP 7 as a intermediary is problematic due to it's lack of R3d file support. This is a fairly big problem for us as we do most of our grading in Davinci.

Does anyone know if Adobe has plans to support FCP XMLv5 and timing of that?

Oh. Thanks for drawing this our attention. This will be a big issue for me as well as I am in the same process. I am having to leave color (an outrage that it is being discontinued) and Resolve seems like the best option with Ppro. Hope that this can be fixed by Adobe.

Uh yeah, EDL can work. But for feature size work, EDL is a royal PIA. Lots of prep-work that needs to happen in PPro prior to sending. And only one-track at a time. Then the round-trip has more re-assembly to be done than with XML. Lots of stuff does not get transferred with EDL.

The feature I am currently grading in Resolve took 3 hours prep to move seamlessly from FCP to Resolve. Thats a new land speed record for me. I'm used to spending 1 to 2 days prepping and verifying. I expect the same time gain when I bring the graded project back into FCP. I really don't want to lose that brand new gain that Resolve 8 brings by using PPro.

So I guess this is a question for Adobe: any plans to update your XML support to FCP XML v5?

My guess is that it's only a matter of time for a better solution to be worked out here. Since Resolve 8 came out after CS5.5, I'm not too surprised that a few things are broken. With more users jumping over to PPro, either Blackmagic or Adobe will have to work out a solution - hopefully it's soon for your sake :)

Can you get me more detail here. We are talking to BlackMagic about how we can fix some things we know about... Want to make sure we know what you are seeing. Thanks

Dave,

The big question here is : do you plan export of XML v5.0 for Adobe Premiere 5.5 ?
Because importing of FCP XML 5 in DaVinci Resolve 8 is almost seamless.

I am using Adobe Premiere 5.5 to cut 40 minutes weekly tv series shot on red one. Then everything goes to Davinci Resolve 8 for color grading via EDL. Preparing of EDL is very hard - near disaster. I am loosing whole day for that operation. Half for assembling sequence in Premiere, half for conform in Davinci and the third half ;) for applying Zooms, Pans and Tilts by hand. The guys from Black Magic promise me that they will improve importing of XML v.5 and will import Zooms, Pans and other motion attributes of clips. Now remain the question Adobe to improve Premier 5.5 to export XML v.5

Then...
i will be happy...

We are working hard to resolve the issues with DaVinci and XML round tripping with ppro.

Good to hear. I just bought Production Premium and I'm working towards transitioning the post of a national cable show from FCP to Adobe.

I have never tried that. But I face problems when trying to conform an Adobe created XML in Smoke. Smoke only reads XMLs that are created by FCP. When you look at a Premier Pro XML and an FCP generated XML you will immediately spot millions of differences. Adobe's XML is made to work with FCP which it perfectly does. Unfortunately not with Smoke, nor with Resolve and I bet there are others such as Scratch that will face similar problems.

But fortunately there are workarounds. The obvious one is to conform from Premier Pro to FCP and from there to Resolve. The second possibility is to use AAF. AAF from Adobe Premier Pro to Smoke works and may has a good chance to work with resolve too. Either way, I don't see the need to roll back to a tedious EDL workflow, at least what I can tell by your description.

Hi Todd,
I just installed the 5.5.1 update, the XML fix for Davinci still not work. I just set up a simple 2 video track with title and 1 audio track.
Any news from Adobe?

You will need resolve 8.0.1. Are you using that? If you get us the sample you are using.

Cheers

I did a quick test and it worked perfectly. 3 tracks with transitions. Didn't take it back out to PP yet. On my way out to a shoot and will return with Epic, Red One and 5d2 Timelapse footage. Looking forward to the new workflow!
