  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi all,
happy new year.

I started a project on a MacPro 12 cores/64Gb RAM with Redrocket and nVidia Q 4800, internal raid 0 as source drive and Dulce Raid 0 as scratch drive.
The system preforms very well and I was able to edit half feature film with no problems.

Unfortunately I have to spend some time away from my workstation, and I have been trying to finish the project on a Macbook Pro:

Macbook Pro 17" 2.4Ghz/16Gb Ram
I am using two Glypgh Raid 0 drives connected through e-sata (Sonnet e-sata-Express Card), one as source drive and one as scratch drive, but performances are poor.
In order to have a smooth playback I have to keep playback resolution at 1/16, although it all looks like a youtube video on a Apple Cinema Display.

Does anybody have experience with CS5.5 and Macbook Pro?
What do you suggest to improve performance?
1/4 playback resolution would be enough for me, but so far anything above 1/16 generates a painful playback.

I am not sure here if it is a hard drive issue or a CPU/GPU issue, or both.
My question is, do you think a Proteus Thunderbolt drive would give a better performance?
I don't have the budget for an extra Redrocket card (with Max digital adapter) and all can think of is using a better raid drive.

Thanks for any kind of feedback

you're probably gonna need the rocket. you don't have the processing horse power to take on higher res playback on cpu power alone, cuda only helps with effects, and a 2 drive raid 0 i've seen with great results with r3d playback, but with a rocket. that's really the bread and butter of editing r3d directly, without rendering everytime you move a clip...

Thanks Sven and Tom for the quick reply!
I forgot to mention the most important detail, the feature was shot with a RedOne MX, 4k 2:1 (mainly Redcode 42)

I have used the Premiere CS5.5 on Macbook Pro 15" with no problem, but it was just 1080p project, the main problem here is the HDD, its only 5400 RPM and definitely is not enough for the 4K editing. Solution? Offline editing with proxies..

The hard drive is actually 7200 RPM, they state it reads up to 250 Mb/s http://www.glyphtech.com/products/gt062e/#/images/products/062e-gallery-front.jpg
Of line editing with proxies cannot be done since the project is already half way done... otherwise what is the point of this post?

I could barely get 1/8 playback off a Macbook Pro 15 with a similar config using RED One R3Ds, so if you are using Epic footage, 1/16th is not too surprising. A similarly priced non-Apple laptop (Thinkpad W520 in this case) will easily get you 1/4 playback, amongst other things. Do note that Expresscard has a much lesser bandwidth than eSATA and the adapter holding the drives up. How much, I am not sure. You should monitor your hardware resources - that's one way of finding your bottleneck.
