  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Adobe CS6...

Ask them to fix the Premier so you don't have to render ever time you do an effect or grade adjustment.... just so the picture can play smooth.

And a decent colour corrector would be good...

I'd use it tomorrow if just these two things were fixed....

It's almost there... almost...

Hi Mark,

I've read a couple of times in the past that you have had troubles with speed in Premiere. I might shoot you a PM as Premiere has better playback performance than any other NLE I've tested.

I can quite easily throw an R3D on the timeline, throw on a 3 way colour corrector, some levels and not have to render a single thing for smooth play back. Let's see if we can get it to work as smoothly for you :).

I'll shoot you a PM :)

I love seeing people helping people, that's what this forum is all about. Well done Brad.

videoguys has a really sweet deal for upgrades right now for those of us not yet on 5.5. basically you upgrade to 5.5 and get 6.0 for free when it ships! oh man i think they just convinced me...

Premiere CS6 with Iridas's technology could be pretty awesome. Let's wait and see.

With the masking and tracking tools already built into AE, Speedgrade would seem to be a better fit than in PP. I for one would love to have hardware support for grading tools like the Tangent Wave in After Effects.

Hi Mark,

Did you try 4K HD in Premiere timeline 1080 ? It is much more faster than other Red format (yellow line), even on a "poor" (without cuda) Macbook Pro 17. It is smoother to edit R3D this way than AVCHD of GH2.
But I am looking in Alienware next generation direction with big cuda graphic card. Anybody did try GTX580 M ?

Olivier

For me, I need real-Time external monitoring support.. This is major.
Jay

Jay, go to your sequence settings. there is a tab made for that...
RT External monitoring has been there since CS2 if i remember well.

Pretty much everything fcp user wanted in premiere has been done, for non-tape based worfklow...

Thank you for the encouraging comments in this thread about gtx285, cuda and premiere. I need to tweak a little more out of my old mac pro.

Anyone here with some pros or cons about using a modded GTX470 with at GT120 UI on 2008 Mac Pro 3.1 8core. For use with CS5.5 Premiere etc.

Right on Mark !!!

exactly the same for me!

Is the gtx285 more powerful than the quadro 4000 in premier?

I do not think so, but I do not have experience with that, just hoping to tweak a bit more power out of the old mac pro beast without sacrificing too much money.

Premier is my target for editing, and CUDA being essential, I figured these numbers about cuda cores would be saying something: gtx285 - 240 gtx470 - 448 quadro4000 - 256 but it is about much more than just these numbers i guess.

I am afraid I am going way off topic here, Adobe has developed pretty nicely, and thats what im going after. I should start another thread on these technicalities.

I should just add this for the benefit of others in the same situation. http://macvidcards.com/2011/29/fermi-cards-come-to-the-mac-pro/ I am not their customer, not advertising, just asking if others around here have experience with this.

Back to the topic, Adobe has some traction these days, lets see what NAB and the annual spring CS upgrade brings. Looking forward :)

Thommes, I've gotten cards from MacVidCards. He's really helpful and a great guy to deal with. To get our GTX480 working in our Mac Towers we installed the latest Quadro Drivers. Then installed the card. Then installed the latest Cuda Drivers. If you have a GTX470 then Premiere should recognize it for Mercury Playback. If not, you have to modify a txt file with permissions for other Nvidia cards (easy process).

Pros: GTX470/480 is fast. RCX can now debayer at full res on a GUI monitor with a Rocket Card and handle realtime Alchemy (slider adjustments and playback) at 1/4 and 1/2 res. Premiere can play at 1/2 res in realtime in a 4K timeline. Effects are realtime as long as they support Mercury. In DaVinci it's a monster. Paired with a GT120 for the GUI monitor it can run circles around a Quadro 4000 for 1/2 the price.

Cons: Price - It is roughly twice as expensive as a GTX285. In premiere they don't necessarily utilize the Cuda Cores to the same effect that DaVinci does. So, your render times are very similar to a slower card and you only see slight performance bumps when you're really taxing the card (multi layers and effects). But if you really need realtime out of a certain effect at full or 1/2 res then it's worth every penny.
Heat - It gets super toasty. I'd recommend it in an expansion chassis if you can. When in a tower it sits snug against a rocket card, so monitor your temps appropriately when under heavy loads.
Power - It needs more juice than a GTX285, so keep that in mind. 6Pin and 8Pin power connectors, but MacVidCards will hook you up with an adapter.

Overall, we love the extra power and hope Adobe will utilize it even more with CS6

Adobe rocks

Totally Agree Roberto,

I have been using Adboe from the time they were only a Type House. Showing my age with that. I am curious however, in this next upgrade of Premeium Production Suite CS6 will Adobe be including the newly aquired Speedgrade? I have attempted to get an answer to that question from Adobe but they have kept the answer pretty closely gaurded.

Thanks to anyone who knows.

In regard to CS6 and Speedgrade, I won't pretend to know, but Adobe's new Creative Cloud coming in a couple of months is a subscription that gives access to all CS products and the mobile products, including Lightroom. So if Speegrade ends up being part of the Production Premium, you may want to simply buy into the subscription and have access to everything in the CS line of products. Subscriptions may seem expensive or constrictive, but in my estimation, it gives full access to the most recent software and smooths out the the buying cycle by replacing it with a consistent monthly expense. $50 a month for the most recent of everything, all the time....pretty good deal I think. I believe Adobe is pricing it aggressively because subscriptions is where software is going and they want to establish their user base early. My two cents.

Andy,

Thanks for the link to Adobe's Creative Cloud. I didn't see Audition or what I recognize as an audio application. I think the $49.99 per month ($600/yr) is for one seat at the table. The annual 1/2 step upgrade is $400/yr with two seats at the table. I am talking Production Premium. Creative Cloud did appear to be the Master Collection though which has the design and web apps.
