do all adjustments made in rcx carry over into fcpx? if i use adjustments in rcx that aren't available in fcpx they do not seem to show up in fcpx? any ideas?

They do as long as you had an RMD file inside the RDC folder to begin with from the time you imported your R3D file into FCPX.
That is how they link back and fourth.

i am aware of how the adjustments can be applied from within either app....but the plug in in fcpx does not allow me to adjust curves or lift/gain/gamma....so these adjustments (from rcx) don't seem to carry over when i open the clips in fcpx ...

Curves, l/g/g/, etc. are applied to the image after conversion to RGB. This metadata doesn't translate to FCP X. Only the metadata specific to the raw settings. If you are doing that level of correction in RCXP, then you are better off rendering ProRes and bringing "baked" media into FCP X.

so all these settings aren't raw adjustments? what about alchemy and film look sliders? i don't see any of these adjustments applied in files opened in fcpx?
so only the adjustments available in the red fcpx plugin actually translate over from rcxp?

Before you ever open a project / event / .R3D file in FCPX - You must first open the .R3D in RCX and save a .RMD file.

Once this .RMD file is saved Both RCX and FCPX will both be 'pointing' at the same file & changes - So any and all adjustments made in either program will show up in the other.

If you don't do this step first; then you will end up with an .RMD file that FCPX creates & that RCX doesn't 'see' & can't access. So any later changes in RCX won't be seen by FCPX (not sure if that is described correctly)...

Just remember to first open all RED files in RCX and save and .RMD

. Open Redcine-X Pro and find all of your media. Add it to a bin. Select all of your clips and Right Click them. Select "Save RMD".
2. Import your RED footage into FCPX. All changes you now make to your R3D's in RCX will now update automatically in FCPX.

That's not true. I just did a quick test and FCPX definitely sees the curves adjustment. I guess some playing around to see which parameters get sent through is in order but it is more than the set which is presented to you in FCPX itself.

Cheers, Hywel.

All of the 'parameters' or changes in RCX get sent through - if you set the project / event up properly to start with.

ok....i went back into fcpx, deleted the event.....went back into rcpx, dropped the footage into a bin, selected all clips and saved .rmd just like you did in the video....opened up fcpx again, go to import the footage and the adjusts still aren't there....is the problem that this footage has already been imported into fcpx at one point? do i have to get rid of all .rmd files and start over?

Are using / making proxies in FCPX or .R3D native? Have you tried making HUUUUUGE bad adjustments to see how they show up?

Wasn't my video by the way - just to 15 seconds on Youtube to do a search… It's a wealth of info by the way.

no proxies in either....the problem is that it is completely obvious that the adjustments i have made do not translate over....
none of the alchemy, no film look, color is off....it's not even close....the most obvious is that there is no grain.....
it just looks like none of the adjustments that aren't available in the fcpx plug in are actually read in fcpx....i guess i will call red and find out...

Not sure what your problem is - everything translates instantly for me.

Shoot something brand new - one clip of something - and bring it in by the prescribed method. FCPX may be hiding the .RMD file that it makes and dumping the event doesn't clear it out?

Film look adjustments like alchemy are plugins that will not work in external editors.
thanks...yes...un-checking those boxes makes the footage look like it does in fcpx....this is unfortunate.....
i try to do as many adjustments in rcpx as possible...because that is where i pull my stills....

thanks for clearing this up....

It's amazing the RED includes these plugins for free in Redcine. But it would be great if they were available within FCP or Premiere, even if you had to pay for them. Although, Davinci is where it's at anyway.

like i said: the important part of the workflow for me is the pulling of the stills and making sure that the color is consistent between stills and video....so whatever i bring into fcpx pretty much stays that way....alchemy is a nice one slider fix but i can tweak curves and contrast to get the same look....i can add grain in fcpx so that is not an issue either.....now that i actually know for sure that these adjustments do not carry over, i can work with that information instead of banging my head against the wall.....
i have looked at davinci....compared to fcpx and rcxp it is quite a bit slower to work with on my set up....and i can't pull stills (or can i?)....or can i grade in davinci, bring it over to rcpx, pull the stills (with the davinci adjustments intact) and then bring it into fcpx (again with the davinci adjustments intact)? somehow that does not seem possible....

FWIW to FCP X users - if you don't create RMD files first - you can just point Red Cine to the FCP Event folder and update the grades for the RMDs FCP X created.

When you import a R3D file into a FCP X event it will do one of two things.
1. If an RMD file exists from Red cine or some other app, then FCP X will make an alias (symbolic link) to the Original RMD file in the event folder.
2. If no RMD file exists, FCP X will make its own RMD file in the event folder.

#1 allows you to easily just open back up Red Cine and point your file browser to the original footage and make edits...

#2 Simply requires you to point Red CIne to the Media aliases (symbolic links) in the FCP X Event folder. So just point red Cine's file browser to the FCP event folder and grade away.
