  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Adam Wilt Visits RED ( the long version )

Interesting report and Im glad Adam spent a lot of time on the form factor.

HDR has me smiling, and Im no longer worried about the performance or feature set of Epic, it will be amazing when it all comes together.

I don't really get all this hype about the DSLR form factor for motion. Anyone that shoots with a DSLR is well aware of it's compromises and is often buying tons of accessories to overcome these design limitations. In short, a new market has emerged for companies to make accessories that turn these DSLR's into usable shoulder mounted video cameras. So I don't see why all the configs we've seen are on emulating a format which is already flawed(unless it's just to highlight the size). A DSLR is really Epics secondary purpose. I'd love to see what you have lined up for tripod/shoulder work with the EVF.

I'm still hoping for a camera I can clip on and off a tripod quickly and put straight on my shoulder comfortably without adding or bolting on accessories/plates. That was my biggest gripe with the Red One.

So great work, Im excited about it, upgrade probably in the bag for me; but please don't forget to make something more ergonomic for traditional ENG/indie film use. I think that would be it's primary config, not as a DSLR.

Karl,

I have had the same issue with the Red One. I own a Mantis which makes it reasonably easy to hand hold the Red, but the switch over takes too much time.

At NAB, I saw Epic unclip from the base plate and clip onto a shoulder mount in two simple steps. Exactly what you are asking for - very cool.

That does sound better! Ideally I'd like it to be mountable to a tripod with the shoulder pad attached (like a typical ENG camera), but maybe this isn't possible with modularity.

Fantastic peek inside. Filled to brimmin' with very important and critical pieces of information on where we are in the process. Adam has keen insights and knew exactly what to look for (and shared his observations, thanks) to communicate a status update without putting Red on the hook for a release date. Well done. Austin, San José, Lake Forest and Hollywood, Hmmmm. This is interesting to say the least. I for one have a much better picture of where everything stands on the Epic and Scarlet fronts. Thanks, Adam.

RED is the only one that has it figured out "Motion first, still second" that's why the DSLR's "Still first, motion second" will be short lived in the moving picture world. Who need's 3D when 4 & 5K imaging is far more impressive...perhaps 3D will always remain a 50's novelty. Now if I could just see the light of Scarlet and know she is still alive!

Thanks for posting the article here. Very good read. The stage 6 section was most interesting to me.

thank you adam for the very interesting read.

no weather sealing between modules and mounts jim? those tiny gaps invited droplets to creep and flow inside (capillary force)

dont worry :)

Also, I didn't realize that you have a full-on lab down in Austin. Where do I send my resume/cv? :p

Great read, & taken w/ Wilt's HDRx post, nearly an EPIC State of the Union address. Love Adam Wilt's blog.

Except no complaining about weight. Those who have hand held a Platinum or worked w/ an Origin know what I mean. The fact that all this technology fits in such a small form factor is, for my $, the biggest deal of all.

Side handle question

Side handle question

Does the side handle pivot? Does the side handle only attach to one point on the operators right side of the body/brain?

Maybe I'm crazy (stop laughing Brook) but I am imagining attaching the side handle to a rosette clamped to the iris rod out toward the front of the lens for the op's right hand like the handgrip on an ENG lens with a short multi-pin cable running back to the brain.

With the camera body getting lighter, the lens and mattebox (FF motor, etc) up front largely determine the balance point for hand held shooting. My hope is that when I change lenses I can quickly re-orient the handle fore and aft on the iris rod to maintain balance. I am also keen to have my hand in a comfortable position for long takes while at the same time having the ability use the controls without having to move my hand.

Cheers - #19

The 17-50mm RPZ looks a lot better with out the hood. It looks smaller and would fit with more matte boxes. i don't own this lens,( i have the 18-85 RPZ and the RPP's) but if i did i would be worried about taking the hood off. is there any chance that red might make a straight hood instead of the flared one that is currently used.

Is that difficult to do? :)

The 18-50 I dismounted many times on my own and clean it and lubricated, but I would not do so on the RPP's as they are literally build like TANKS, and would not do it my self, this beauties al go to Duclos for service, including the Re-Markings.

Even so it does not seem to be too hard, I would simply not recommend for any one to do it them self, or it will end up that some one that thinks can do it will do it and scratch and or damage the lens.
