Ouch.

Seems Aaton is out of business.
As much as I love RED, I still think this is sad.
There seemes to be so much good thinking going around the Penelope Delta.

Maybe we'll see another "Deanan" comming over from there?

Cheers!

that's very unfortunate… really liked some of their approaches (bigger but very silent fan, "cat-on-shoulder",…).
(happy with RED but it's not like competition and different designs are a bad thing - I think they are often good things actually).

Out of business, but not dead yet.
This is the normal procedure in France to allow someone to buy the company and continue what has been started.
From the AFC web site their will be a futur for Aaton. ;-)

Their design has a lot of great ideas : "ND" shutter and "vibro" sensor but also big flaws : uncompressed DNG 4k files (not indie friendly) huge size (not as big as the F65) for the little what it does (no internal image processing) and it looks like their "best ever produced sensor" had problems with skin tones.

They have to make a bigger step to push the game at another level and stop to think in the ellistist way : "we are the best because we invented TC and the cat!"

That is a sad story. We'll see if they can hang on.

There's a lotta paradigm shifts going on... record stores, book stores, the newspaper business, broadcast TV, the music business, camera manufacturers. Tough times for many caught up in these changes.

I really hope some one pick up Aaton, they have some great ideas.

it was kind of over before it started. it was very expensive compared to the major competition, and too much of a niche camera. heavily PC based post workflow, no overcranking, and coming out in a market where it's flooded with cameras. I just don't think there was really any room in the market left for a camera like that. epic/dragon on the horizon, alexa still working a great deal, some f65, f55 picking up steam, the list goes on. i really didn't see that camera falling into a very broad shooting market at all.

got the pleasure of seeing demo footage though, it did take a very pretty picture.

Do not know about that, as the build was big as a bengal tiger. :)

until you actually have it on hour shoulder. it was really great. weight and balance was spot on. not much needed to go to instant handheld. the design is famous for a reason. in this case, looks are completely deceiving.

Not quite sure "the flooded" market was the problem.

They had enough companies wanting to buy the Delta if they hadn't have any set back because of the Unfortunately, mass production has been hampered by defects controller Dalsa sensor, then the uneven performance of the sensors themselves,

Strange that they planed "mass production", I think their niche could have been between 100-500 cameras. Perhaps mass production hasn't the same meaning as for RED?

What I've heard from one analyst that all other digital cinema manufacturers are also in very bad financial situation except Canon.

Why?

Just because our industry is too small while digital cinema camera development and production cost are astronomically high but in that case the marginal profit is almost equal to zero.

So we'll see who will survive...!!!???
