  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

A Weapon of Destruction..... has this issue occurred to any other owners/operators?

We changed lenses a few thousand times without powering down, on pl, ef,nikon and fd mounts, with no issue, so i doubt thats the cause.

The only times I seen weapon behave oddly is when using poor power source, I was powering the camera on a Dtap and long cable from the side of a blueshape battery, then we both had missing captures and strange gui things going on, without camera complaining on the power. Apparently the blue shape does not give enough amps and that can cause it to behave.

So what power source was used?

YES. Agreed. I think power sources could well be a thing. Especially on the Carbon Fiber's that may be more power hungry?

This happened to me once. I freaked out, then I turned off the camera, removed media, turned it on, and re-inserted media after it booted up. Problem solved. No clue why it happened.

What camera were you shooting with?

Did you lose media?

Have you tried REDundead?

As it's not recognized as a red mag will redundead even see the drive?

I guess it could be possible to format the mag and then use redundead to get the media. But dont take my word for it.

Here is what happened in my case both times ( with two different mini mags):

1) why the "this card is not formatted for use in this camera" (even though the card WAS formatted in camera, I chose cancel on the option to format.
2) I safely ejected the media.
3) I placed the media in my card reader. There were no folders or files visible but using "get info" it showed 418 go's used so my guess is that the corruption affects the hierarchy in the file structure
4) I ran redundead and it showed file after file that it was recapturing and writing to the hard drive that I had pointed it to
5) at the end of the four hours ALL it recaptured was basically a thumbnail of all 184 clips... One frame for each. The 2nd frame was corrupted
6) I sent the txt log files for both mags and screen shots of what the 2nd frame looks like.
7) I am guessing tech support will examine, digest, consult and then in a good party line say " sorry this has occurred. We think we have fixed the issue. Please let us know if you have further problems. Good day
8) SO the question remains: Will I be able to truly trust the DMSC or eithe r512 go mini mag again?

From how I have seen it work: Possibly.
And from how I have seen it work: It won't alter anything on the source drive.

REDundead doesn't need to recognize things as a REDmag to work

Curious...any updates?

Such a huge fan of everything RED does. Really want to get to bottom of this, and see if redundancy systems can be implemented.

Nothing much to report other than the tech folks have received the Brain in Irvine. I'll report back when something is discovered and what the cause of the issue and the remedy implemented. Thanks for asking. One thing did strike me............if this is such a rare occurrence why was redundead created?

REDundead was created years ago during the Frontier Days... maybe even for the spinning harddrive way of recording... I'm not sure.

Anyway you look at it, creating REDundead can't by any stretch be considered a negative. Forward thinking done right is always a positive.

Read Undead can bring back footage from formated media.

And during the years people have done all kinds of wack things with redmags. And sure there been issues caused by camera failure, Beta firmware, etc. But no, this is really a rare thing that happened to you. I know others had the same thing happening but I´m sure red will sort it and it is most likely firmware related. And my wild guess would be power related as I noted that you can simply drive the camera with to little amps, the camera does not complain but behaves very odd. Epic worked in a similar way, if 12V cable was to long loosing amps or what not then playback among other things stopped working before camera complained about power through a dialoge. On weapon I seen more odd things with low power and yet I have not seen a weak power dialog box. But again this is me speculating could be anything else like something as simple as your SSD just went faulty those things happen, not often but sure they can break.

Keep us posted Chris.

As to Redundeand, it was created because people have accidentally wrote over old mags, or formatted mags when they didn't mean to.

It wasn't created to address this issue, which is totally new IMHO.

Nick,

Good News: Red has decided after looking at my camera to simply issue me a new 'Brain'
Bad News: I have no idea what they discovered on my 3 day old Weapon that caused my situation. Hopefully, it will not ever happen to another user.

Thanks for the update Chris and glad to hear you're getting a new brain. But damn, I was really hoping they could tell you (and all of us) what the actual cause was.

At the very least, you get a new brain. Keep us posted.

Just Had this booting the camera with media attached problem today on a White Helium we used at the ECLAIR (east coast Lens analysis involving Redusers).

we lost a whole mag of test footage.

I'll let the owner come forward with more info. not sure if it was able to be recovered with TestDisk, Data Rescue 4 or Redundead.

Definitely a tear jerker - not a good feeling.

Yup, as the host of the ECLAIR, I can confirm this happened as well.

It was incredibly disconcerting and cast a pall on the entire day.

Will write more about it on the master thread here:

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?142539-Forged-Weapon-killing-mags-on-power-up/page14

This one hit close to home - as we finally saw this WITH OUR OWN EYES: a mag getting corrupted and losing its clips after a Weapon was powered down, then powered up.

Until this morning, this data issue was simply something I was tracking on Reduser.

But today...it happened to us...and it became a 1000% REAL.
