  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

A Response To Jim Jannard and 1080P

There you go! Could this be the first game to drive 4K displays for gamers at home? There must be a few 4K LCDs in the works, or Jim would probably start building one himself. One way or another, they are coming soon, I think.

At least 5 major companies will show 4K displays at CES for sale in 2011. Panasonic will have 85", 103", and 152" 4K displays. HDMI 1.4 can handle 4K, so no new cables required. 4K is going to become a marketing buzzword in two weeks...

nice! that's what i like to hear.

are there any more in the size range of 40 inches, for example, to serve as computer monitors?

You have got to watch how much whiskey you put in your x mas pudding, sanjin. Absolute nonsense, but have a good one.

He meant the "smallest" best...

Thanks Joseph I corrected now.

Steve G still doesn't understand why you are like a cop hunting my thoughts here when ever I use Alexa word.

And to answer that it was a bit of Laphroaig Quarter Cask involved anyway

and also there is my newest Q&D random test that was shot on GH2 Vimeo >>> Switch to Flash player >>>

That sort of "teaser" was shot pretty fast in about 10 minutes, then transferred, edited and graded in 20 minutes.

You can't do that fast and easy with Alexa or any other "good enough" 1080p camera today.

That is a reason I usually call GH2 image quality that is properly transferred to Apple ProRes 422 equal almost to S16mm film.

(Edit: Ouch... Why Bother...)

While you obviously have some things wrong about other cameras than the ones you currently prefer, I am glad you are happy with the ones you are using, San!

merry Xmas.

Not to pick on you, but that is exactly what is quite easilly done with the A...

merry Xmas.

I do not like heavy cameras any more

That means you can't pull A***a out of your handbag and start shoot instantly...

But today you can do it with GH2 only and also tomorrow with Scarlet...:hurray:

About time, one thing hat always drove me crazy and steered me away from the net videos was there ridiculous low BAD
resolution, were anything larger then an iPhone or iPod screen will leave you with a horrible viewing experience.

... sorry to say, Ketch .... but bandwidth in Italy is not at the peak of things ...
do you still want to come back ... hehe ...

after this news (google fibre net), i am seriously considering re-locating to LA or SF .... (!)

what the heck ... lol

You say most people are too broke for 4K, but trust me, there are plenty of rich people left, and they love to spend money on the latest home theater tech. Somehow, college kids manage to afford $6,000 gaming PCs. There is money out there.

Well, those people can probably drive Rolls Royces too, but that doesn't make a Rolls Royce a mass market consumer product. For something to succeed in the consumer sector, it must sell in the tens of millions, not thousands. People on RedUser want that to happen with 4K, but my guess is that RedUser consists of a few thousand people, nearly all of whom are here because they either own, use, or want to own or use a Red camera product. So they're already drinking the Kool Aid, so to speak. The rest of the Earth's population is in a different category. If they're going to spend even more money on home entertainment, it's far more likely they'll do it with something that's significantly different than what they currently have - stereo 3D, for instance, a format that already has actual content being delivered. And even with that, it's not taking off anywhere near as quickly as its advocates had indicated it would.

We're living in a world that's still in the middle of monumental fallout from the biggest financial disaster of our time. That's the reality, despite the presence of some folks that are less affected by that than most. A large percentage of people outside of the major coastal cities in the US are largely unaware of HD, let alone 3D, 4K, or anything else you and I might think significant. Even with the resolution advantage Red has had for some time, if you look at the projects announced here recently that are using Epic on large features, every one of them - every one - is a stereoscopic 3D shoot. What is selling Epic on these projects is the combination of image quality and form factor, which makes it uniquely suited for 3D projects. It's the SI2K without any of the image and resolution limitations, and with overcranking abilities that the SI could never dream of. In the world of 3D production, there is nothing else like it. Now, some of those that adopt it for a 3D production will likely like what they see, and consider using it even when 3D is not part of the equation. But what's making them look is 3D. I see the same thing happening with Joe Consumer, because Joe doesn't have the money, the space in his house (he probably lives in an apartment....), or quite frankly, the interest in gigantic screens with 4K resolution. But he might be tempted to look at a football or basketball game in 3D, when and if he can afford it.

Bottom line: 4K in theaters is likely, although not for a while because too many theaters are already equipped with 2K digital cinema setups and are not even close to paying that off. 4K digital intermediate and VFX work is happening, but slowly because the time penalty is still too great to justify under today's budgets and delivery timeframes. That will change in time. 4K in the home? Sorry, I really don't see it, and certainly not until the 3D rollout either proves successful or dies. My opinion, and I'm just as entitled to it as you are to yours. But let's check back in about 4 years and see who was right.

... depends highly on how far RED is with the projector ... and pricing ... i´d say.

I would not expect any other company to break the price barrier ... but if history gives any hints ... 4k entertainment is just around the corner ...

We may as well see a comeback of small art house theaters ... (as i said in another thread) ...

Nope.

For home use, this is all about infrastructure...

I am a bit more optimistic on cinemas, than M Most, but wth much less well founded reason... I see the infrastructure getting rolled out here (for cinemas) but it is not yet a significant part of the postproduction routine...

Come to think of. I have two shorts to finnish, maybe I should do them in 4k, just for kicks...

You haven't talked to Epson lately.

Why "nope" ... ?

Big internet pipes are coming (here in a couple of places)... and not to stream 1080P.
http://www.businessweek.com/news/20...mes-faster-internet-speeds-in-fiber-plan.html

And did I mention that REDray is 5 times the resolution of 1080P and half the bandwidth?

... Ever wonder why YouTube has a 4K option?

It isn't hard for me to see the future. I have to wonder why it is so hard for some. ...

... may i borrow this last one ... lol ...

:-)

I've decided. I need to talk louder...

... that would help - a lot!

You haven't talked to Epson lately.

lol ... right!

... that is the point ...
so why would anyone protect a 2k projector investment ... as you´ve mentioned ...

when he can make more money with a new 4K one ... because of the pulling effect of the technology being promoted .... (by youtube for example, as of recently) ...

I don´t follow the logic in your thinking here ...

It's clear you don't understand the theater business, and you're not familiar with how motion picture distribution is handled. And you also don't understand how the financing of the digital cinema rollout has and is being handled, not to mention the amount of money involved. Pushing the content over the Internet is the most minor of issues, as it represents the least amount of current costs. It also represents security risks of epic proportions, which is one of the major reasons there's a Digital Cinema Package format in the first place.

If you want to follow my logic, you need to be a bit more informed about the way things actually are rather than have a somewhat simplistic view of the situation.

well, M. ... as always i like the flexibility in your thinking ...

... i refuse to think in old models, no matter how manifest they are or seem to be ...

... you are completely right. i do not understand all the complexities you have mentioned in terms of theatrical distribution and the flow of money in it and so forth ... which is not leading me to your false conclusion, it may stay like it for ever ... quite contrary.

... when things are about to change dramatically - as they do currently ... it occurs that there is no need to do so - neither.

Actually, my incapacity to get "this" ... drives me to create something better.

... I, for one, understand "digital" .... and have created tons of code, that may as well be powering it all ... just 'sayin ...

let there be broadband and projectors .... and the old school - RIP ... :sifone:

P.S: what have you created lately, to improve our lifes?
