I know magic motion is the revolutionary but
what about the 50% that voted no ... or who are now priced out.

Would you be interested in buying a non-HDRx scarlet at $1000 cheaper?

I feel you, but the same way I voted "no" on the original thread, I think it is good for the renter to know what he/she gets and to keep the productprogram simple.

I really feel the:

"I have a Scarlet"
"But I have a Scarlet, too"
"But mine is S35"
"But mine comes with HDRx™™™!"
"But mine is fixed"
"Fixed? With or without HDRx™™™?"

etc etc etc discussions will really just harm the brand.

Scarlet now comes with HDRx™™™ @ 1000$ extra price.

Simple = good

Simple = good

Got to agree with Gunleik. RED can't please everyone and i'm sure they would if they could. For a smallish company I'm guessing it would be best for them to keep it as simple as possible until they grow bigger have more resources in place.

I voted no but mainly because I want one now. Jim's very humble words on the 'Late' thread are all I needed to be over it.

HDRx is gonna be Crazy goood

This tread is silly.

It's not a point to get cheap camera.

The only one solution is to make a camera that works and makes the best pictures possible.

Without HDRx in the future there are no good pictures.

Very simple...hope that some of doubters finally will get it!!!

Let's all face it. The fact that any of us even have a chance of affording a Scarlet is amazing. You'd be looking at spending triple if you wanted to get something that performed similar to the Scarlet, from another manufacturer. The fact is, Scarlet, or any RED for that matter, can't be compared to any other cameras, as no one is yet to replicate they're feature set or capabilities. As long as I can get a complete RED camera for under $10,000, I'm happy.

Agree with gunleik and jody.

I feel sorry for those that got their hopes up with the 3K for $3K original program and then saw everything keep creeping up. But I think that all needed to be set aside when RED realized the capabilities of their new technologies (combined with the vDSLR movement on the lower end).

It's kind of like if Apple had come out with a PC compatible at the same time they brought out the Macintosh. There was certainly a market for it, but it went against the grain of everything they were about and were trying to achieve.

Same with Scarlet. I think it has always been about taking the basic capabilities and technology of Epic and simply using it with a smaller/cheaper sensor and limiting frame rates to something more normal and also therefore more affordable.

We Epic-Xers are sort of getting HDRx/magic motion for free (or at least with no extra charge - albeit with the cost penalty of the delays) but there was also a bit more room in the overall price to accommodate it.

So the choice with Scarlet was either to leave it behind technologically, before it even launched, OR simply realize that the whole market has changed anyway, leave the sub-5K market to the commodity players and make scarlet a major jump forward that is still affordable for most working pros, corporate video departments, schools, etc.

Let's face it, I'm not rich like you guys. I'm not a working DP and I'm not living off the camera I own.

HDRx™™™ has got RED Trade Mark TM and every future product will include that feature.

Again it's very simple.

If you want to buy Scarlet for US$1000 less then buy later used one.

And again it's very simple.

This would be the same if you would buy Apple hardware and don't want to have Mac OS X that is Apple's main TM.

Maybe you want to install Linux or Windows there but that's now completely another story.

For example the main difference between RED HDRx™™™ cameras Epic/Scarlet and Arri Alexa is very clear shown here:

http://reduser.net/forum/showpost.php?p=659345&postcount=413

And that is actually the main difference between RED Digital Cinema Company and Arri Digital.

It's about TradeMark TM that is called HDRx™™™.

And one more again it's very simple.

Well enough time has gone by since the 3k for $3k days that people should have had
time to save to make up the difference. But.. if one is just living
paycheck to paycheck and useing it all just to survive on...well then I can understand.

Well, we're not rich either, but we do make money with the camera so $7K or so spread out over a 3 year time span is only about $200/month so makes sense spend a little more to get a big increase in bang for buck.

As I said, I do feel for guys like yourself, but you should really take a look at something like a Panasonic GH1 or the new GH2. Just phenomenal bang for the buck, and nothing to be ashamed of in terms of final product.

Huh? Who are you to say whether this thread is silly?

I agree with the creator of it.

And yeah, the whole point was to get a cheap camera. 3k for 3k?????

Of course, you're another fan boy who will jump to attention every time RED speaks. But for the people who live in the real world, we are kinda miffed as to why RED doesn't listen to there customers and work on releasing it rather than adding more features and therefore prolonging the delays.

I've owned and shot pieces with gh1, 7d and t2i and I want to escape long gop bullshit as much as the other guy.

Take a look at my site, I'm a writer and a director and storyteller. I just happen to love cameras and shooting them.

I'm not saying that Jim should only sell a non-HDRx™ scarlet. Just give us little guys options.

Seems like you have already invested close to the cost of a Scarlet in your existing cameras. Is $6k really such a stretch?
It is pushing my budget limits too, but that just means not buying an I/O module and EVF on the first order to get HDRx™ and SSD upgrades. One of the nice things about modularity. If this were a Sony or Panasonic loaded with EVF, LCD, and I/O features like their ENG cams it would be $30k.

As much as I feel your pain and as critical as I've been about the price increases, it wouldn't make much sense to manufacture both HDR and non-HDR versions of Scarlet. It would fly in the face of the modular approach and possibly result in additional price increases (due to increased manufacturing complexity -- what was two 2/3-inch Scarlet models would effectively become four).

It's not a point to get cheap camera.
Yes it is. Because you have leica glass you might not understand.

But for some, an extra $1000 is the difference between owning a Red, and NOT owning a Red.

Scarlet was always about a cheap camera that kicked ass. Now its less cheap but more kickass, which is great for some, but bad for others who do not have the capital means to get into the Red game.

Scarlet without HDR would still have been a very capable camera.

no ... buy and flip, I never owned all three DSLR's at the same time, I think you already knew that David from my posts on SU

But for some, an extra $1000 is the difference between owning a Red, and NOT owning a Red.

exactly ... this is a 20% increase ... imagine if the much beloved epic suddenly went up in price by 20%

Sorry guys I accidentally pressed no, I meant yes. So make sure you add a vote.

It pains me to say this but I think we've found the Scarlet killer... her name is Scarlet.
