  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

A New 3K FF35 Brain Spec?

Well there must be some advantage to larger photosites?

Possibilities include smaller files (unless the compression is increased), higher FPS, easier in-camera electronics, lower camera temps, easier on the compression (maybe fewer artifacts in some cases), and faster post-processing (sometimes, but consider the half-high demosaic).

I'm not currently interested, but the limited frame sizes/framerates on the S35mm and FF35mm Scarlets are a major turn-off for these models.

3K/60fps for a ~16mm sized area of their sensor is mandatory and it's pretty obvious that RED can achieve this price/performance. Maybe they could beef up the CPU power of these models to allow such shooting modes and increase the price accordingly. I don't think that such an increase will be too big.

I think that the size of the chip, regardless of how many pixels it has, is a big factor for the manufacturing cost. More surface area = more chance for defects etc. So if they made a 3K FF Scarlet, and it cost nearly as much as the 5K then do you still want it?

3k is larger than S16mm image on the S35 and FF35 due to the larger pixels. 2k is the only format that will fit within the coverage of S16 lenses.

Micro 4/3 format could cover 3K on these cameras.

The other alternative is to buy a 2/3" brain for 3k high frame rate work and and S35 or FF35 brain for higher resolution normal speed and stills work. Cheaper than buying an Epic by far and solves the problem.

But what % of overall cost is the sensor? The internal components would be vastly cheaper for processing 3K than 6K RAW, for example. You would not want or need stills shooting at 3K either, so you could toss that out.

I believe Jim said in another thread that the larger chips of the S35 and FF35 cost more to manufacture than the retail price of the2/3" (Edit: corrected) fixed lens camera.

I think you mean 2/3" fixed.

More than $2500USD for ONE sensor? Man, their margins must be tiny.

Tube fuck

You can buy a 5D2 for $2,500 -- the whole camera -- and its got a FF35 CMOS sensor.

well, sensors aren't all made equal, are they? red's are optimized for their application (moving images)

We've been over this in both reduser and scarletuser... and both places has come to the conclusion that 3KS35 sensor isn't happening. So I wouldn't guess that a FF 3K is coming either.

That being said. I'd absolutely love s35 3K, and of course even a FF3K... Because it would mean 3K raw-files that isn't cropped from the full field of view. Making it easier on the post-side while still getting s35 and full 2K quality. And maybe getting higher framerates if the chip allows it. Since the datarate should be the same from the sensor as the 2/3 brain, it "should" be possible to use the same parts for on camera processing and storage as the 2/3...

Possibilities for better low light and those stuff also plays in but the main selling points of higher framerates and lower filesizes while still getting full FoV cinema quality pictures remains even if the smaller photosites = more noise is a myth...

How have you been guessing my plans? ;-)

If it can do higher speeds, if it performs better in near complete darkness: yes.
