  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

A little 16 GB CF news...

CF Card

CF Card

I just finished watching FreshDV's invterview with Hoodman about their CF cards I guess they made a fast enough 16gb card for RED.

The deal on all these cards is - they must come to RED so we can qualify them. That is the only way we can verify that they are in fact fast enough - unfortunately when tested the vast majority are still failing that test.

Hoodman last year at NAB showed off their P2 card and it never came out.

All hype no delivery.

Oh wow, thanks for that. I mean its still cheaper to buy directly from RED but would Hoodman honor an exchange of a different 16gb CF card if it wasn't fast enough?

I'm still waiting on the Hoodman P2 cards, the H2 that they promised last year.

Well that guy in the interview is making claims.

They definitely have the card for sale on their site, but it says out of stock.

not tested by RED, and we are not using them at RED...

we are waiting for the faster hoodman cards to come down the pipe so we can test them though, good guys over there.

I've not used Hoodman's cards so I don't know their capabilities. Hoodman announced long ago that they were abandoning their P2 card program due to unforeseen costs and Panasonic's lowering prices (and Fuji entering the P2 game really finished it off). I don't think that's "hype." RED decided not to persue their mattebox products even after showing them at NAB this year and gave essentially the same reasoning. Seems fair and honest to me.

Delkin Card

Delkin Card

I tested the 305x Delkin card -- my Red refused to format it. So the Delkin will not work on a Red, although it seems to match the write speeds of my Red cards in my Nikon.

On my Red day I asked if I could leave it for testing. I was told it wasn't fast enough. And that may well be the case. Sustained writing is one thing, burst writing another.

I think that Red has to allow the cards to be initialized and I understand that. And there are bound to be vendor issues and deals. So I would suspect there aren't any cards but Lexars that will work in a Red at this time.

But it will be nice when Red finds a 16gig card that it can endorse/market. I suspect Lexar will be making them soon. But this will hopefully all become moot when SATA CF cards arrive -- and Red can sell us a sata CF unit which will write Red code 36 at as many frames per second as the camera can manage.

rodbradley,

Are you saying or very vaguely insinuating that RED is purposely keeping other cards out of the game (other than Lexar), even if their speed matches the specs?

I'm just curious.
