Hey Guys I have a few basic questions regarding round tripping from FCPx to Resolve back to FCPx

1. What is the best method for copying a look/grade to multiple clips in the media pool? Does a colorist edit each clip individually since (for example: most skin qualifiers etc will be in different places in different clips ) ?
2. How do I export my roundtrip XML from Davinici in the same format as my source footage? Every time I click the check box for match source resolution something happens and the highest format is 4K UHD (less than source footage)
3. Back in FCPx -- If I shoot a clip varispeed at 60fps on a 23.98 timeline what percentage would I increase to play as if it was shot at 23.98 for ramping purposes. 140%?

Thank you!

Here are screenshots of what I'm asking about in question #2. When I export an XML out of Davinci everything seems fine however when I import Resolve XML back into FCPx the resolution is off as you can see the footage is smaller than the frame (black box surrounds)

Check out Chapter 13 of the manual:
Using The Gallery
Using Versions To Manage Grades
Copying Grades

Qualifiers don't move, Power Windows do. If you are referring to Power Windows, those (as well as the qualifiers) can be copied as part of the grade either via the Gallery, or linked as a Remote Version then tracked on a per shot basis in your timeline.

The free version of Resolve is limited to UHD. Which version are you using?

I have not had my coffee yet, but that looks right.

Thanks for the reply Scott -

1. Hypothetical - What is the correct way to grade say a dialog in a film where it will be constantly cutting back and forth between two people talking? Since most people do a first cut with raw footage, then export to color grade in resolve or NLE of choice, would they then be applying that grade to each cut clip individually? Or would the entire take be graded then cut to switch between camera angles? I know someone can copy paste a look but skin tone node adjustments move around. This seems like it would take forever to correct skin in each individual clip. I'm probably over thinking I hope?! =)

2. I'm using the Lite Version which would explain the UHD max resolution. I've found that when trying to work with 3K WS files it adds black letterbox as well when roundtripping back to FCPx.

If you use Remote Grades in Resolve each instance of a source file will inherit a single grade. Therefore, in a multicam scenario you might only have to grade each angle once. As you move down the timeline fine tuning you must remember to look backward to be certain your changes are not having a negative effect on earlier instances. If you need to isolate a clip from a grade you can switch that one instance to another version or a local grade.

Double check the resolutions of each of your timelines, both in Resolve and FCP. One of them is bound to be set incorrectly. If it isn't that, your render settings in the delivery pane are likely to blame.

Sorry for the questions - How do I know I'm using Remote Grades vs Local? When I import an XML with multiple cuts from the same source clip will one grade be applied to all? How do I toggle to another version and a local grade?

I know how to change the resolution in FCP but in Resolve when I bring up a new project and hover over it, it defaults to 1920x1080. How do I change to the highest resolution possible?

Thank you as always.

Hope this helps http://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=32702&p=194984&hilit=remote+grades#p194984

You have to change it in the Config by right-clicking on the project.

Take a few minutes and go through chapter 13. It is an easy read and all of the details you seek RE: grade management are there. I promise. :-)

Ok I understand now after reading how to toggle between Remote and Local versions but now what is the best way to Copy/Paste a grade from one source clip to another? Create a still and choose "add correction" to whatever highlighted clip selected?
