Hello and wishing everyone a very happy new year.

I just heard about someone having problems with their 8gb lexar cards. I myself have had good luck so far but what worries me is that I'm hearing about random intermittent dropped frames. Has anyone else experienced problems with their cards. I would hate to find myself in the same boat at the least opportune time which according to Murphy's law is bound to be the case. On the other hand I would hate to have to abandon the 8 cards I have bought.

On another note I hear from the same source about problems with the red batteries. Namely that there are booting issues that occur only when operating from the red bricks that disappear when connected with the power adapter. Just to be clear these are problems I have not experienced myself but am hearing from a very reputable source who has multiple cameras. I would love to hear about others experiences in this regard.

thank you as always,

Noel

There was considerable talk about problems booting up with batteries (all types) a few months back. I have heard very little about it since build 16. It only occurred once for me.

Haven't had any problem with our 8gig cards

BTW, I see you list Vermont as one of your locations. Grew up in Burlington and Montpelier. Love that state.

Happy new year.

RED-BRICK batteries are very reliable.

There was a battery/plate fit issue with early shipment V-plates, but I'm not aware of any issues like that recently.

(Have your friend call Tech Support to discuss that)

Southern Vermont myself - Westminster near Brattleboro : )

I had been aware of the earlier problems with the plate and also that they had been resolved. These sound different - I am sure tech support has been contacted - most likely a problem specific to those batteries. Again I have had no problems with my own batteries.

Would you care to address the question regarding the 8gb cards? Thank you for the responses.

No problems with 8GB Lexar cards here. I have 6 of them.

I had some dropped frames with my 8GB CFs.

I contacted RED support they immediately shipped me a new CF module.

I had no problems after that.

I have had problems with the 8GB Lexar cards. I'm not the only one, do a search.

I've purchased nearly 20 of them, I've had 5 of them fail, two of them were bad right from the start and immediately swapped out. The cards typically show that they are starting to go bad by dropping frames during recording or sluggish performance and/or read errors when offloading. Their performance can decline as they fill up, too. More so than the RED cards it seems.

As for battery issues, I have never had any myself. But with a lot of the early cameras, there were some battery plate issues that would cause the battery connection to lose contact if the camera were bumped or moved. 2 of the 4 cameras present at the LART event in December of '07 were having battery plate issues on Day 1. Ted from Red stopped by, if I remember, he swapped out some batteries and plates that day to get us running. To my knowledge, most such battery plates have been replaced. I saw a lot of this about a year ago, haven't seen it in several months now.

Thank you Jeff -- so it definitely seems that I'll not be able to depend on the Lexar cards. Better to know now - but a shame. They cost me only $65 each from circuit city. Till now they have not had problems but on big shoot I guess its better to not go that route. More stuff to buy -- 'oh what fun.

I guess my remaining question is then have there been lexar cards that performed well consistently enough or should I forget about them completely? I'm waiting for a couple of 16gb cards anyway but was hoping to skip buying the 8gb which seem grossly overpriced.

Thanks as always,

Noel

I use the Lexar cards. But I honestly would not trust them for a critical one-time shot, nor would I trust a RED Drive. I'll shoot Lexar cards before I trust a RED Drive for anything that involves moving the camera, or vibrations, harsh sound, etc.. that could cause the drive to skip.

Some of my Lexar cards, most actually, are perfect and have never skipped a beat. I think it's just occasional manufacturing duds. Some people have speculated that the RED 8GB cards are actually re-branded Lexar cards. This could be true, however, I have never had an issue with a RED card. If RED is having Lexar produce the 8GB cards, which I suppose is likely, perhaps the higher cost accounts for something -- like testing and qualification to make sure each card is up to RED spec and / or even selection of the top % of cards manufactured.

With the cost of the Lexar cards, I would still recommend having some in your kit. Just test each card thoroughly before you put it into service.

Well that is more reassuring. In terms of the red drive have you experienced those problems even with a shock mount type system like the ET drive mounts. I had to send my drives ahead of me so havn't really been able to test them with the ET mount yet but had been under the impression that they largely solved that kind of problem.

Thanks again,

A very well respected rental house in Munich, Germany that has several REDs have tested the 16GB 300x Lexar CF cards and have not found a single problem with them... they rent them out on a daily basis...

I've had problems with my 8Gb CF Card. I rarely shoot with it, but one time I shot with it because I was unloading the drive onto another.

The two takes that was shot on the card was so screwed up. Red stuff all over the screen while previewing it in REDCINE, I would even get kicked out of REDCINE during playback after viewing some red stuff. I was so disappointed because I couldn't use those 2 takes that we got for that angle.

I have not contacted customer support yet, and I believe I still have the messed up info on the card. By the way, the camera did Not report any CODEC ERROR. Which made me feel robbed of that angle, because I would have waited for the drive to finish unloading and shot it with the drive.
