  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

9" LCD shipping today....

I talked to the Hoodman guys, and as soon as someone can send them the specs they will make some hood options for us. I haven't got my shipping notification yet.

+1
A good hood is a key piece for the usage I have in mind - NOT dragging around a directors/client monitor in fast moving situations. If the image is reasonably sized (and decently shaded) my hope is that I can get "sign off" on the shot during playback that can be elusive on the 5" due to the size. Don't get me wrong, you really should have a look on at least a 17" monitor but that is not always practical. Sure would save on "safety" takes that kill time and fill up mags for no actual benefit...

I don't have my shipping notification yet either, but if someone on the RED team (or someone at the front of the line) would be so kind as to send specs to Hoodman that would be much appreciated.

Ordered! Looking forward to The Big Picture...

Yeap, notified and ready to play... ;)

It was hard for me to go down to the 5" after the 7" on the R1, but very happy to go up a notch and move to the marvelous 9"... ;)

Hey Ketch, how do you do to always have the RED stuff on your rigs BEFORE ANYONE ? Are you Jim's brother in law or some like that ? BTW, i appreciate your love and passion for this...

So the 9" monitor arrived and I'm wondering if there was to be a microfiber bag included with it like the 5" monitor. I use that to protect the screen while it is in the case. Actually something a bit more stout might be needed, might have to work on something like a neoprene sleeve with velcro.

Edit: HA! That didn't take long. The 9" monitor is almost exactly the size of the iPad. The width is exactly the same as the iPad, the height is a tad shorter. So I tried my neoprene iPad case and presto! Instant fit, zips all the way around the mount too. Although, it would work better if it had a drawstring, might look for one that does.

Oh, and I sent the measurements to the Hoodman folks. Haven't heard back from them yet.

We got ours yesterday. WOW. It is HUGE compared to the old touchscreen.

Yes, we would LOVE a microfiber bag for it. It is NOT included, but we would be happy to buy one. We love using those to throw over the monitor when moving the camera around.

BTW, picture is amazing and it's very lightweight. We were afraid we couldn't put it on a Noga Arm, but we did and it works fine.

Got mine today too, great turnaround time Red Team!

Thanks for the note about using a neoprene iPad case, one more reason to love RedUser :-)

Thanks Mark P. for sending the measurements to Hoodman, I was about to go out in my 90°F garage to do so ;-)

So, my Red 9" monitor arrived today......and after using it for about half an hour, I have to say, IT IS FANTASTIC!

I love it. It weighs in at approx. 2.75 pounds, and so is not too heavy at all.

Now, can the surround GUI resolution be improved with firmware?
It looks a bit low-res now that it is blown up to fill the 9" LCD.

Also....how about a 2-to-1 magnify option, as in 200% magnify? Please???

Glad you like it Martin.. i'm telling you you are gonna put your 5" back on one day and it will be impossible for you to work with :)

and yes to GUI... it will eventually get better.

Thanks Jarred.

And this is why I LOVE Red.
9 minutes later and I have a reply.....wow!

Just spoke to HoodmanUSA and they said they were already working on a hood and that it wouldn't be ready until around the end of the year. The person I spoke with was whomever answered the phone, so for all I know, the receptionist might have just given me some party line. If anyone else learns anything different or better, by all means, please pass it along. But as this is a 9" monitor, I have a feeling this thing is going to resemble something from Uline, i.e. a large box.

Thanks for the info Mark, I was hoping the hood would be out in a couple of weeks, not months :-(

Hey, all you 3rd party accessory makers, looks like an opportunity to me...

Mark, if you see this, could you post the measurements in this thread so anyone out there interested in beating Hoodman to the punch can get crackin', thanx.

The juxtaposition of the 9" monitor against the compactness of the Epic is striking. Not that the monitor is a giant, but the camera is so small, even with the quad module on it.

Blair, here are the measurements I sent to Hoodman:
Width: 9-7/16" (it's not quite 9-1/2")
Height: 6-1/4"
Thickness of screen: 3/4"

WOW...this thing is HUGE.

That is not what She said Greg... ;)

Jokes aside, yes it is, especially en respect to the 5", but it is worth the extra size and weight in pure GOLD!!

Can't say how happy I am working with this new Beast of an LCD, what a view of my Framing, and a pleasure to Focus, now the problem is that I have the girls want to see play back all the time, especially when shot in slow motion... ;)

Ketch, I own the EVF but I don't use it much, what am I missing? I actually like using reading glasses and the LCD, if it's bright I add a hoodman. I don't know, maybe I'm alone, but i just prefer the screen. the 9" will be amazing.

I also use glasses, but thankfully I don't have to when using the REVF as the Diopter allows for perfect calibration, which eliminates the need to wear glasses, I now of course love using the new 9" like crazy, but still have been making use of the new OLED EVF in this past week, and not only for outdoor bright sun, for some type of shooting styles is just better to use the EVF, and there are lots of DP friends that fill the same.

Bottom line, if you rent, absolutely keep your EVF to go with.

I mean this comparison. :hand:
