  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

8K CF Weapon Sensor Upgrade

If I want to upgrade from Epic MX to Vista Dragon Scarlet Weapon w/ 10K deposit before NAB, can I Carbon Fiber my Epic Dragon Weapon with a 10K trade in on my Red One MX... or is that EOL before June?

Just a very minor detail, but I like how the pixel size is once again exactly 5.0 micron. Makes for an easy calculation to get from 40.96 x 21.60 (mm) to 8192 x 4320 (pixels).

Naturally, the question to follow would be, is this just a bigger slice of optimized Dragon silicon? Or is it new tech?
Bigger slice 100%

Yes, you are probably right. It does read "Dragon 8K" on the product.

Whats up with the new PL mount?

What new PL mount? The CF Weapon comes with the black Magnesium PL mount, which is part of the current EPIC Carbon Dragon kit.

From reading a bit, does the internal ProRes not go more than 120FPS? is that because it's scaling vs windowing(cropping) the sensor?
I was hoping that this release would unlock the potential for shooting high frames at a normal frame size, but from the looks of it it's not possible still. any clarification would be great!

Heh. I would go with Anton's postulation that they're now including captive screws with it. ;)

Seriously though, they haven't been making the Magnesium mount available in the past, but now we can buy it separate from the CF brains and that's most likely what makes it "new." Or at least it was not available separately last I checked.

sorry Jeff i dont understand captive screws meaning. They are like fixed?

I have to say I'm a little disappointed the sensor isn't 24mm tall so you could have a proper 36x24 mode for stills.

That would be amazing. Although, that said, if you crop a little off the top or bottom (vert shooting) - then there it is. It's sort of stills with extra room if you think about it that way.

What would be nice is a STILLS Crop Mode. Which would be great for run and gun stills shooting when you don't want to get trapped pondering if you've framed for a print or billboard.

Yes. The Weapon CF has more power under the hood than the magnesium.

Dumb dumb dumb.

I'll pay for the power.

I'll pay for the 8K.

I will NOT pay for a fancy schmancy CF body I don't need or want. That CF body material is a substantial cost - look at the price difference between Dragon and Dragon CF, for NO difference in performance. Plus, I work on volcanoes. I won't take a CF body on a volcano, period. You should see the state the CF parts of my Red matte box were in after I took that on a red hot lava shoot!

If this is true, it's a major misstep, and may mark the beginning of the end of my relationship with Red. I'm not wildly enthused by the value of the Weapon upgrade - but not making the 8K sensor and electronics upgrade available in a standard metal body is just dumb and wrong and incomprehensible. Except for a few people juggling ounces in specialist applications, CF isn't needed or wanted. I can't understand why Red have gone this route. CF is great on a race car, but pointless extravagance on a workaday movie camera body.
