  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

8K CF Weapon Sensor Upgrade

This piece of news is great.
In 3 years time I will be able to buy a Dragon 2nd Hand for $4000! :)

I guess the forged process requires huge pressures & contolled cooling to ensure large amorphous folded wafer patterns.

Tortionally stronger in all directions would mean less materially to transfer load from orthoganal surfaces - and so I would speculate greater weight reductions than a car chasis.

Looks beatiful - like tiger eye wood veneers.

Am I correct in saying, NO Magnesium WEAPON will ever have an 8K sensor in it? This is a big decision as to whether I go the CF upgrade or Magnesium UPGRADE....and a big price jump as well.

A dream comes true for extremely shallow DOF photography lover like me. Put a T0.95 or even a T1.3 lens on this thing and watch yourself wet your pants.

This is without any doubt, for me, the most interresting product announced from RED during this NAB.

Hey Brent, How are you sir? So with this 10k is it a deposit or are we going back to RED one days where you (red) keeps the funds till and when this 8K camera see's the light of day which at this juncture is deep 2016? thats a year and a half easily of interest bearing funds you'll
have if thats correct. Please elaborate.
 
8K in Carbon Fiber only seems a bit exclusionary - not for the everyday workingman Ivan Agerton market
 
Is the 8k-for-$10,000 sensor upgrade discount open during NAB only? If so, that will probably make my decision for me... although, not the decision I had hoped for.

Damn! Wish I was Jordan Spieth... could easily afford the upgrade today.
 
The carbon brain offers a lot more bandwidth and functionality at a higher price. There's a lot more to it than the external carbon panels. When it all comes down to it, there probably isn't much difference in cost between the carbon and magnesium paneling and this is how they are differentiating the two models. Initially, we're not seeing huge differences in specs between the two cameras with the 6K Dragon sensor and a lot just has to do with limitations of the sensor. But the CF brain gives us increased internal processing and bandwidth for higher simultaneous frame rates with ProRes and significantly deeper LUT precision.

Paul, all the DSMC mounts work on Weapon and the EF mount provides full coverage. The 8K sensor is a bit wider than the 36mm width of FF35, but a bit shorter at only 20mm, and we still get a 43mm image circle. So full-frame 35mm glass and mounds should all cover just fine. :)
