Really great price: 850
Features: built in hd-sdi + 1080p

Limited settings and must be plugged into computer for settings adjustment.

Tested working with my Epic and Scarlet.

Quick note * If you compare the one board 5.0 touchscreen LCD and Smartview HD side-by-side, the Smartview image looks a little colder/bluer.
As a director's monitor, totally works for my needs. I rely on my MBP for critical color analysis.

I can't believe it. I was just looking at this today and think "I wonder if it would make a good directors monitor?"

Guess that answers my question.

Just wondering how you could power it without mains power or if you didn't have a generator for power? Battery power?

What are your thoughts?

Also, what are you using for holding the monitor to the C Stand?

:))

I was looking at the Smartview duo version a little while ago - again as an inexpensive way of monitoring for a multi-cam shoot.

Alexander - as far as I remember, there's no resolution change options, it autoswitches between formats and is intened for OB use etc (where the switchers will dictate signal path). Using Ana mode on the Epic will be fine, as that's already corrected before SDI/HDMI output.

i'm looking for anamorphic mode 2x horizontal unsqueeze when anamorphic lenses are used but shooting is in 5kff spherical mode or on the cameras that dont have anamorphic mode supported but anamorphic glass is used. some monitors allow anamorphic unsqueeze option to support 2.35x1. i hope they have this or can enable it in future updates.

i'm sure it'll recognize such feed just fine, since it's only the lens that is different. the image will be squeezed though if there's no setting to support 2.35

I think you'll need to look at Marshall or TV-Logic (or Small-HD) if you want unsqueeze on the monitor.

These panels are just really for mass OB monitoring (ie trucks or large installations), they're so cheap because all the monitoring options (and associated tech) are not included - and are provided by other kit in the digital chain.

I'm sure Tonaci will 100% confirm, but the computer/Ethernet control of these monitors is simply for colour calibration :(

Don't get me wrong - I'd love it if they had an X2 option (or custom rez)... I just can't see them adding it... but maybe we should petition them!

Check out Black-magic's site, there's a comprehensive set of details.

thanks. yes, i sent them an email. hope you guys can too. with all the exposure tools available on epic color/waveform stuff is not that important. but if an unsqueeze is an easy firmware thing, i hope they add it, this would bring it closer to the level of marshalls/tv logics, etc. but at such great price/usability combo

Interesting. This may have just saved me several thousand dollars. I've been looking for something to dangle back to video village. Tired of renting. This might do the trick.

It has no battery power option, so small genny.

The stand is this one: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/604688-REG/Ikan_YK17_YK17_Monitor_Yoke_for.html
i did chop it off the top though since as the stand is taller than monitor. After a hacksaw, boom..fits like a glove.

Hey Alexander..whats up man. No de-squeeze...but maybe you can convince them to update the firmware to support it. =)

cool!

Yeah..this monitor has probably been out for awhile. Somehow I missed it.
I took a leap of faith and ordered it.

If you need a vendor, give Brandon Zachary from Abelcine a call. Tell him tonaci sent ya. =)

Great find Tonaci! Thanks for posting this.

It says the power input is 12v. What's the connector? Seems a simple job to make an adapter to 4pin XLR to power this off belts or blocks.

USB software control? I wonder how hard it would be to plug in an iPhone or iPod and write a little program to allow for that control? Come on Blackmagic, think of these things!

Specs at BMD's website:

SmartView Duo (800x480/8") - Color Depth 16.7 million colors
SmartView HD (1920x1080/17.3") - Color Depth 262,144 colors

A bit disappointing, wouldn't you say?

Image looks great despite this spec. Show me another monitor under 1500 with built in hd-sdi with 1080p on 17" screen.

tonaci: what is the height & width of the monitor itself (not the screen, but the whole unit)? are there any more mounting holes on its sides, top & bottom other than those seen on the front of the stock pictures?
thank u
