Hey guys,

I am planning on purchasing a 7D for the next few months until the Scarlet is released. I'd like everyones opinion on must have accesories for the camera. I am gonna buy the body only and a 50mm prime to start. I'm also most likely gonna buy a Redrock shoulder mount as well as LCD monitor, pull focus and possibly a mattebox. I'm also looking at a Beachtek adapter for recording audio via XLR. Does anyone know of a cheap but good LCD monitor that would work with this setup? Also, am I missing any accessories?

Thanks

Interesting would also be to know how much of that could be used later with your Scarlet, or any Scarlet for that matter (if I may add).

I think certainly that the money on a mattebox is at first far better spent on more lenses. A fast 50 is great, but unless you're buying that specifically for a project you know you only want one focal length (which by the way on the 7d's crop sensor will be like a mild telephoto) than I'd suggest adding in other lenses to have something like a 28, a 50 and an 85. On the other hand, if you really are cool just having the 50mm, I think you'd have a great little set up there. Enjoy!
Peace,

-Harry

I think we have another year before any Scarlets start shipping so I'm getting myself a 7D. I think it's a great tool if you know what the hell you're doing.

I'd rather suggest the Zoom H4n in that budget range. The onboard audio on the 7d is very basic, it should not be your primary audio capture even if future firmware allows the auto-gain control to be switched off. Use an external device to record, and run an attenuated cable into the 7d for syncing convenience.

Agreed. The Zoom is amazing for the price.

Mitch are you seeing more people renting the 7D or buying it? Also, your rental package is an amazing deal.

The November 30th Scarlet 3k announcement.

The November 30th Scarlet 3k announcement.

The November 30th Scarlet 3K announcement will be the deciding factor as to weather I buy a 7D and all the accesories on December 1 2009...If I do get the 7D I'll end up sitting out all of the scarlet fun:smile5: (I Hope) or misery:sad: for about a year..

We only recently started renting the 7D (it's only been around for about a month). But the interest has been extremely high. Sales interest is also very high. It really depends on the type of production. For many jobs it makes more sense to rent rather than own. For instance an LLC needs to be able to close out at the end of a job with no assets, so in many ways it is more straightforward to rent. There are plenty of other reasons to rent, including the fact that if anything goes wrong it's up to us to deal, not you.

Thanks for the comment on the rental kit. We worked hard to build out a package that is a real cinematographer's shooting kit. A complete set of primes and the essential accessories to shoot. Anybody can just rent out a camera body.

****On a serious note I'm thinking about getting a 7D + Sigma 17-70 2.8/4.5
Have some fun until the fixed comes out.****

I have this setup, also an 85mm F1.8, 70-200 F2.8 and old Russian 16mm Fish eye to go with it. I love my stills so this is great for me.

Abel is doing lots of business renting and selling HDSLRs such as the 7D. Here's the rental kit we put together for the camera:

We also sell a lot of other bits and pieces for them. The Juicebox is also nice for audio. There's a great deal of info on our site.

Thanks Mitch! That link was very helpful. I was having trouble "visualizing" what I wanted my rig to look like. That photo pretty much settles it!

Also Mitch, how much does the Arri Mattebox and follow focus run? Do you recommend any other brands? I think they may be a bit out of my price range. I'm only looking to spend about 3000 when all is said and done. (I know that's probably a bit unrealistic, but I just wanna get up and shooting)

I suggest you visit our HDSLR Specialty Shop on our website:

We sell lots of related gear for these cameras and there are plenty of other configurations we can work out with you if you'd like to discuss it with one of our Sales Reps. I like to say that there's no one right answer, just the one that is right for you.
