  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

64Gb CF

And Scarlet gets further out of reach...

Y'all should see if you can come up with new 16GB cards as fast as the 64's for poor folks like me.

I wise gaffer once told me "this business ain't for the faint of heart or the faint of wallet."

Current 16GB should be plenty fast for Scarlet.

Yeah.. like 6 years ago? An eternity for this kind of technology.

I am not saying they ain't worth it. I have no idea about the factors that determine the price of such a product.

I was just looking at other 64GB CF cards on the market at around $300 and thought that the RED CFs might be double that. I wasn't expecting times four!

Well, i guess whoever needs them will get them. :rolleyes5:

Yes, there are factors that determine the price. Remember how long it took for RED to approve 16GB cards? They looked all over for a brand that would meet the speed and consistency requirements for 4K REDCODE, and couldn't (and wouldn't) approve something that was not absolutely reliable in the field for their customers, so they ended up working on their own custom cards.

Now, imagine that they need to prepare for EPIC 5K (at 120+ fps) and even less compression with the upcoming REDCODE specs. Its very unlikely, again, that they were able to just go out and get off the shelf $300 CF Cards to be able to handle these demanding specs.

It's just not that simple. I believe that considering what technology you are actually buying and the workflow options that open up with having it, this is a great price.

I understand the sensitivity to price points on some of the gear, but this one has always perplexed me.

I paid 1500 for a 32 GB SxS card about a year ago, and yes they have come down, but as Casey points out, the data rates required by Epic are going to be quite a bit higher.

But mostly it comes down to this:

You know all that money I spend on lenses, lighting, talent, craft services, and all the blood sweat and tears tears that got me to shoot day.

Do I want to trust my one and only negative to something that isn't absolutely rock solid?

Uhm, not so much.

If you want to be grumpy about price pick on the REDRAM, there SSD performance is more broadly coming into line. At least if my experience holds true generally. Less bursty followed by higher latency problems than earlier drives.

But even then, I vote for rock solid, even if it costs more.

Just sayin...

Will the 64gb be useable on Red? That'd be pretty cool to record 4.5k RC42 for like half an hour!

Question, will Red allow other CF or SSD media to be used at all data rates (that are available for that media)? I REALLY dig the move to SSD. Look online, a 256 ssd that can do 200MB/s is only $750. I wouldn't mind paying a Red premium, but I'd hope that a 256ssd is easily $1200 or less. I guess I just hope for cheaper and cheaper media :-)

Bump,... any news as to when we can expect to see these things?
