  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hey guys, I'm about to go into production for an indie horror feature, and was wondering what extent of benefits I'll receive going from 6:1 to 4:1 (as I've heard people are now able to achieve 4:1 @ 23.98 fps)?

The film will be cut in 2.35, so the WS mode @ 4:1 23.98 is a possibility. For darker/night time scenes, will I see a vast improvement going from 6:1 to 4:1? I only want to go with Beta firmware if the difference is drastic.

I also have a Red One MX, and planned on shooting some scenes in 4.5k WS @ RC42...should I simply skip that for the darker scenes since RC42 is more heavily compressed than both 6:1 & 4:1?

Any advice is greatly appreciated. I've never done any personal tests between the formats, and unfortunately won't have the time before we go into production.

Thanks!

4:1 for night shots and other hard to compress scenes and also for chroma/greenscreen shots Thats at least what I would recommend. Then use 6:1 for normal straight shots. i.e daylight and not to much radical movements of the camera or within the scene. the 4:! instead of 6:1 will help out to get a nicer falloff towards black in lowlight as it gives a less chuncky noise floor.

I would look into the beta problems thats cropped up here on REDUSER.

Im a little scared to update myself.

Thanks Bjorn! Glad to know that is the case.

Yeah I'm a little nervous too...I've read some horror stories. If our A-cam turns into a microwave oven on the feature...it would be costly.

Do you shoot 3k, 4k or 5k?... I shot a lot of night with little depth of field and used mainly 8:1 on 5k 2:1 Epic-X. No problem there. When I had to push asa more than 1600 I should have (perhaps) put it to 6:1. More is not needed. IMHO. You can push the codec to it's limit with wide angle, lots of details, and everything in focus very contrasty mooving scene, like leaves blowing with backlight... or beach full of stones... RC42 (7:1) is more compressed than 5:1 but it's a great codec.

Are you talking about shooting 4k with 4:1 on scarlet. Some say its "only" 5:1. Can any one confirm its actually 4:1. In case its true i think i just leave it at 4:1. I want it as raw it can get. Newer shoot other than 6:1 in 4k.

Hey Pat, thanks for the advice...shooting Scarlet 4k 6:1 (unless I use the new WS 4:1), and Red One MX 4.5k WS RC42.

I know my deepest blacks often have blueish noise @ ISO 800, so for this gig I'll be trying to add more fill to my backdrops.

25p 5:1 is the lowest my camera goes with the new firmware in 4K. On another note, as far as the over heat issue from what i've read people that have had issue had the issue when putting their camera in "sleep" mode (not that it makes it ok) I haven't had any issues wit it, I've just tested it, haven't used it on a job or anything... I know I wont be using that sleep mode, I feel for the guys that are going through it, I have the greatest confidence in RED and their customer support, I'm sure everything will work out.

I can chime in on this with my recent experience from the latest beta. The camera got super hot through half of the shoot and then went into a series of errors and wouldn't record anymore. The fan was in the new adaptive mode.
We rolled back to 4.0.18 and then everything was fine again.

Testing out NEAT Video of late and so far the results have been amazing.

Only issue for me is which version to buy.

If I do a lot of post fx then I would need After Effects version and also an NLE version for straight cuts.

I know this is probably gonna be seen as looking a gift horse in the mouth... but... I wonder if these increased frame rates in 2k and 3k ws are going to translate into us getting 48fps ws in 4k at some point. Would be great and enable some hdrx if need be. Now I will probably get a message from jarred about getting kicked in the balls or something... Ha

I would way rather have 48fps in 4k than 5k just to keep most projects at the same resolution. But I wouldn't be mad if 5k 24fps happened ha

Thats how I felt about my scarlet. Not about my epic. But do u black shade properly? Shoot at 3200 or 5600? I noticed when I shoot at 3;1 on epic I'm never complaining about blue noise or any noise for that matter even at 1600iso

what exact resolution is the new 4k ws?

Surprisingly it doesn't seem like anyone mentioned this. Performing black shades with changes in temperature, resolution, exposure, and frame rate does wonders for noise.
