  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

5K vs. 4K...

Sorry. I don't understand. Exactly what is so sad?

Jim

uhm seriously?!

here is a thought: just let the camera and the picture quality & look speak for what is better or not .... really there should not be the need for this kind of d*** measuring ... ( and really if u look at the red footage - RED One 4k or RED EPIC 5k - there really is no need .... for real i mean it ... but so does ARRI ALEXA and even C300 sometimes - they all have the place and good and bad sides ....)

all that here feels really kinda like desperation ... sorry to say so .... i like RED Footage but this is just sad ..... oh well

I think your jumping the gun a bit....What makes you think that Scarlet is dead?

Earlier quote from Jim: "My expectations are that anyone who doesn't own an EPIC will after Nov. 1st."

I'm not saying this is possible... just correcting the wish.

Jim

There are going to be a lot of happy Scarlet owners when this sinks in.

Oh. well, so much for reading between the lines. '-)

I think its funny when people say 4k 2k who cares its not about how many pixels blah blah.

I don't know about you but If I'm going to shoot professionally and sell jobs to clients I want to be able to tell them I'm shooting the best. Even if the output is only 1080p I would much rather shoot everything at 5k and downrez to 1080p. The value of companies having 5k archives at least in my line of work is invaluable. When cerrtain moments in sports only happen once, I want to make sure I'm sure shooting the highest quality.

well its sad that this 4k vs. 5k post is needed (or at least that someone feels the need to post that... no offence! ;-) ) .... the footage and cam should show that ( what it does actually ) ... and every DP knows why he chooses what camera (or at least he should know) he does not need that kind of post .... (just a thought tho' ;)

Some of us aren't DP's....yet. I think it's important for those of us who don't know EVERYTHING exactly why they shouldn't buy Sony's hype for a second. I, for one, appreciate it.

I disagree.

The Sony f55 will probably be positioned to compete with the Epic.

Jim is pointing out their (very forward-thinking) reasoning for designing the Epic with a 5k sensor.

There were a LOT of camera manufacturer's poo-pooing RED one and the whole 4k system.

Now they are jumping into the pool.

Jim is merely talking about the deep end of that pool.

ok i can see that there is a need to get / be informed ...why and what u should go for 1080p, 2k or 4k or 5k ... but i think that post is not about that ;) but then again should not be about SONY F5 / Canon C500 / ARRI ALEXA or the brand it self .... it always should be about the picture ;) .... so it makes sense for TV to go ALEXA ( the feeling is 90% is on that camera ) and there is a reason for that .... so is that Cinema & music video or VFX heavy or 3D stuff goes RED EPIC ... u know what i mean .... and i guess there also is place for c300 or F5 (that might not be cinema in the first place tho' ;)

... well ok .... but again .... the camera and the picture/footage should show that or speak for itself (in a way) .... why the need to "piss back" ;)

I don't really agree with that, This may not be the most popular evaluation of Sony's latest announcement but the F55 and F5 cameras aren't aimed at competing with Red they are aimed at the Alexa Studio and the Alexa plus, just look at the cameras they are very similar in form factor except that the raw module is an elegant module then slides onto the back rather then some big fat 3rd party solution that you plonk on top of the camera.
Global Shutter is the next thing, part of Arri's pitch for the optical viewfinder is it solves rolling shutter, Sony doesn't need one because they have a global shutter.

If Sony has anything competing with Epic it's the F65 and even that I'm not sure is a direct competitor for Red.

:yesnod:You can simply unlock 5K WS 24P in Scarlet and say good bye to 4K tailgaters, Jim.:yesnod: It'll keep them busy for another 2 years or so. And probably takes your software team less than a day to have it in next update:yesnod:

Well, 4k is not enough.
Everyone is gonna have an epic after November first.
Manufacturing is better now, so less boards not suitable for the epic.
But what do I know, just a wild guess.

I think that red is finally getting its "I told you so moment". They have been doing 4k for so long that even now that the competition is finally catching wind Red is still ahead. I just hope that Red can squeeze another 12 fps out of Scarlet at 5k. I mean whats a few fps between friends ..right Jim?

yep ... that is right .... i have the same feeling ... still ... we need to see footage .... get hands on it (that says more than just pure facts on paper) .... oh and we need to see prices ... and i guess the last point is very important for other ppl around here ;)

It's called marketing.

Sony tried the "let the footage speak for itself" with the F3 and F65, most people have no idea how good they both are. That's poor marketing.

People first fell in love with the red because of crossing the line, but had crossing the line been shot by Joe Shmoe and not Peter Jackson, and all the clout he brings with a decision like what system he chooses to shoot on, it would not have been as effective. It's essentially celebrity endorsement, but more in the vein of " I'm not only the spokesman, but IMO also a client". Very effective.

Keeping your brand in the spotlight is how you move units. Look at apple.

Jim, ready to send in my Scarlet and get an Epic back!
PleAse, please, please, please.
But I still love you baby, don't be mad at me.
I just like your older sister better!
