  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

5k Retina iMac

Price went down, 32GB with 4GB GPU and 4GHz CPU, 1TB flash is almost $800 less now. Expect about +5% performance bump with the new 4GHz CPU compared to the previous. GPU is quite a bit better. Still wish it was an nVidia...

I don't know if this is the update we wanted. Thunderbolt 3 isn't ready yet... Instead of the 4 x USB 3.0 ports, I would have liked to see 2 x USB 3.0 and 1 x (or maybe 2 x) USB 3.1 10Gbps ports (USB-C).

Other than that, it's a respectable update. The next update is probably the one everyone wants as it *SHOULD* bring us USB-C with v3.5 support and Thunderbolt 3.

I was looking to buy an iMac and saw this whole list of new iMacs listed in B&H Just want to know if the top end i7 would be enough to cut. I know next update would be better, but my machine is getting quite old.

Also, I want to know if anyone carries an iMac to the sets via some pelican or something?

Put it this way. There are many Mac users in the Adobe forums who are not happy at all. I would not suggest it. Adobe still has allot to do to catch Open CL up to Cuda especially with stability and memory management.
I wonder how many are happy, though. Squeaky wheel and all that...

I'm not going to update right away, so I'll see how these fare in the wild first. Starting to get graphical glitches though...hoping my 680 isn't on the way out :/

I've ordered this- top of the line 27" maxed out - and am looking forward to use it on the field. How do you all think this compares to a 2012 Macbook pro retina performance wise for red editing?

I use both (maxed out specs) and the iMac is way better and faster than my MBP.

Unfortunately the random frame artifacting with GPU acceleration enabled in Adobe on Mac with Open CL effects almost everyone. That is the biggest issue that effects most on that platform. Adobe has yet to resolve the issue completely that I have seen which requires end users to turn the GPU acceleration off. It's up to you if that is worth it to remain Mac since you dont have to do so on Windows and PC with Adobe.

I ordered an iMac a couple days ago (it hasn't arrived yet) and they upgraded me automatically, and I got a lower price out of it. Looking forward to this new screen.

While not quite as prominent, the same errors tend to show themselves on Windows with AMD GPUs and And Premiere's OpenCL. Adobe needs to fix their shit. While they're at it, they need to fix their billing department as I'm constantly disputing erroneous charges and refuse to ever pay for CC seats on monthly payments ever again.

CC 2015? Hey, nice new features... Did you fix any of the ongoing problems? No? Oh, that's cool, I guess...

Oh, and I downloaded all the updates and they told me Illustrator was supposed to be a lot faster now. It's slower. Dafuq?? It's like really a bad joke how slow it runs on both Mac and Windows. I'm not a happy Adobe user right now. Wish I had $100M in liquid cash because I want to start whipping up some competition for them immediately.

Jeff, do you see any negatives to using the OWC 64gb ram in the 27" iMac 5K? I believe the ram in the high end one is not soldered to the motherboard. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Ya unfortunately there are issues with Adobe and Open CL period. They have allot of work to do to catch Open CL up to the current performance and stability with Cuda. 2015 once again shows Adobe philosophy. Add a bunch of shiny new toys and features while breaking more stuff than they fix. Issues such as Open CL stability and anomalies on Mac/OSX have languished since they added Open CL. Windows Open CL issues have been far less but crop up with new updates when Adobe changes the caching models or updates codecs. Blackmagic is really the 1 hope for serious competition to Adobe with Resolve and Fusion. The way Blackmagic is evolving Resolve shows they clearly intend to compete directly. The Monthly billing issues I am not surprised about at all. We only sell the Team version which is an annual fee since Adobe limits the end user monthly option to Adobe and 2 Retailers. Adobe changes pricing so often for specials we cant even keep straight what the current price is for a cloud license. I am not surprised their Billing or accounting department cant either.

I've been jamming on my fully spec'd 5k iMac since December and it has been phenomenal. I usually don't require a ton of heavy lifting but I have yet
to be disappointed. I've also gotten a softish rolling case for it and has become the best on set computer I've owned. Pair it with owc thunderbolt 2 dock and you have terrific expandability and legacy connections with a minimal footprint. If you need it jump in, it kept me with Apple for the time being.

Peter,
Can you tell us which rolling case are you using for your iMac?
Cheers,
Sabyasachi

Ok, does it support 64gb of ram? I didn't know, if that so now I'm thinking of having one.

Apparently the 27" 5K unit does. OWC has supposedly installed and tested this. They are now offering 64GB Ram for this unit.

Thanks Robert. I'm a bit in doubt over what HDD to go with , the 3TB Fusion or the 512 SSD. I think the Fusion comes with a 128 GB SSD built in, more than enough for applications?

Jesus, it got pricey! I just specced up a maxed out 27", and it came to $5,500AUD! For only $1500 more you can build a seriously beefy desktop.

One way to save is to buy the minimum RAM from Apple and then go full on with 3rd party RAM. That said, tell me where else you are going to buy your 5K display, supposedly with a P3 color gamut. :-)

And comparing it to a reasonably spec'd Mac Pro, which for me comes in somewhere north of about $6500 (sans monitor), it still seems like a pretty good deal. Thinking...

That is only if you insist on staying with the Mac lineup. The Workstation platform ie the X99 would far out perform either the Skylake platform Imac or the Ivy Bridge NPro platform while remaining in the same price range or similar as the Skylake Imac maxed out.

I totally understand what you are saying. That's why I specifically cited the MP. But my point about the monitor still stands; 5K and P3. And, then there is this:

The coming HDMi 2.0 panels next year should open up the options for Displays. The Help desk article is generic compared to the media content creation market. If you get outside of apple software products, gluck without support.
