  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

5k on my scarlet a little cheat :)

Why not just do real 5k 24fps downscaled to 1080p using an external recorder and lookaround? Seems like twixtor'ing 5k R3D footage is probably not really an option for most people anyway considering twixtor is ridiculously slow to render/export even for 1080p... I can only imagine how much time it takes to render out 5k with twixtor effects

I think your technique is amazing, and like someone said, i was just focusing on the hot girl but after reading some of the comment i became more focused. Then I focused on a couple of technical issues that's inherent with twixtor. It's an interpolating morph app. So if just as the key movies the key is not a blur, it's an interpolation that warps just a tad with the background. However I can only see it when I stop the frame. Other than that, amazing. What lens did you use. Awesome look.

i tried twixtor with 4k and it was so amazingly slow that i simply gave up....
the built in technology in fcpx is pretty amazing and MUCH faster.....i haven't tried 5K footage yet but looking at this i will definitley give it a shot....
watching this there is no way i would have thought it came from 12fps....and i really don't care if it holds up for frame by frame peeping....as long as it looks as good as this, i'm sold...
still no epic, though:)...gateway drugs...

Tried to resist going into this thread! Promise!

But...

Working a few TV-shows with budgets, and landing on 4khd 8:1 @ 25 as the best solution, not at least because that is wherethe wider lenses do not act "bad", i have ro say that this entertains me slightly. Giving up motion for resolution, seems like a couragous choice.

Yup. i know... i have Epic and all and should not be bothered with scareletteers problems. But still... To me... This seems a bit like a constructed issue.

But then again, what do I know? For real!

This trick works great for VFX plate shots, things like rustling leaves and moving clouds never give Twixtor much trouble. Anything with people in it, not so much...

I have my sound off, so like an idiot, I was sitting there saying, "darn ads... Let's get on with the Twixtor sample." then the clip ends. I was astounded by the sharpness of the video. What file type did you use to upload to Youtube?

Is it possible to record FF 24p on the SDI out of the scarlet? Then thats a great feature i you want that nice FF feel. second question is can it be done at 48p with a 48p project setting and SDI output? then that feed coming out of the SDI is probably cleaner than what you are able to capture on your SSD cards. I would go that route for over cranked much rather than using twixor on under cranked for sure, since you never know what issues twixor will cause in post.

Yup. You can either do FF 1.9:1 by turning on 4k with lookaround and turning off shading/framelines which uses the full 5k width but leaves small letterboxing since HDSDI is 16:9, or you can use 4kHD and get a 4.8k frame and fills the whole 16:9 area. Presumably 4.8k works up to 30fps and 5k works up to 5fps, but I only tested it with my hyperdeck2 at 24fps. I also recorded R3D and prores simultaneously and confirmed the frame sizes are correct.

I am curious about using this not only as a path to 5K from scarlet, but as an intentional effect.. I think I will be trying this at other resolutions as well..
of course, I am also curious about how this might work to acheive higher K shots at higher frame rates from R1 footage (sure I am retracing somebody's steps).
Also curious as to how this might work with double system sound and sync..
I don't know if twixtor might make the motion of people's lips look out of sync, even if picture speed was rock solid, and at same speed as audio clip..
that is, might the interpolation around lips create shapes that were percieved as lip flap.

Peter Jackson shoot in 48fps, but Greg Filipkowski shoot un 12fps !! and it works...
Interesting !

I'm still skeptical of both... Haven't seen The Hobbit yet.

12fps 5k seems like a bit of a silly workaround, considering the lengths one must go to to properly interpolate missing frames, and then consider that all motion interpolation will pretty much always be inferior even if it looks pretty good for content with low movement, low detail backgrounds, etc... Try moving the camera and try it on a project of any significance that isn't just one shot, and I think it will quickly reveal that you'd be better off renting an Epic or just recording 4k raw or from 1080p SDI instead. But I think everyone already knew that :P

I can't really think of any instance where I'd take strange motion interpolation artifacts for just a bit more resolution/FOV. Keep in mind 5k has 50% more pixels, but 4k has 100% more motion information, so its not even that good of a trade-off.

12 fps is not knew, it's been used in Classical animation for a long time, so yes it does work. Does it Improve the over all image quality from 4k at 24fps, probably not. The tradeoff it too great. I imagine the time required to do this would be worth upgrading to an epic after a couple of weeks.

One possible place this can used to effect is with the new GOpro, shooting 12fps and converting 24fps instead of shooting the 2.7k and up-rezing. After all 4k does not allow up-rezing but it would probably allow this. I've got a African Motorcross safari to shoot for an episode, and was looking for my best option in 4k, and this may work. Anyone want to strap a scarlet to their head and see what the motion looks like?

Just curious if you took 5k 12p footage put in into Adobe premiere CS6 and slow it with the speed ratio to get close to 24fps motion look, is that possible? Is the only way to do this trick with Twixtor?

I've gotten pretty decent results with the Timewarp filter, just put the clip in a 24fps sequence and set Speed in Timewarp to 100%.

We did this music video about 15 years back when the only "twixor tool" was part of the Kodak cineon package. I fiddled around with this effect quite a lot (no in retrospect, I would say like a mad man). But snagging out frames and shooting low framerates and letting the so called "cinespeed" interpolate new inbetweens was great fun. We also went further and made interpolations between to cameras standing side by side. All the errors and fuckups that we tripped the cinespeed into we then looked at as really cool effects... spent quite a bit of time in my Fire trying to smear out the artifacts into something viewable and so on... Little did we know, this band was on Madonnas label and she happen to see the video and a month or so later the director, Johan Renck was awarded to do a video for her "Nothing really matters" and that set off great carriers both for me and johan... so there is a lot of things that can happen if you play with twixor. :)

Not sure if the same shit would fly as well today though LOL...

Funny I don't have timewarp filter in my CS6 only warp stabilizer! I tried 5k 12fps and slowed it down with time mapping. Am I missing something from my program or is this filter only in Affter Effects? Greg did a pretty good job I just wanted to experiment if there were other ways to make it look like natural 24p? lol. I'm just having fun!!!
