  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

G'day,
Since the Scarlet has just recently been released, i doubt very much we will hear any significant upgrades for any year or so
firmware will only resolve the HDRx@4k and alike,
I'm not one to expect miracles from the Scarlet like 120fps@2k ,ect i realise a Epic is an Epic, hence the difference in price,
but the ability to shoot 5k@24/25 fps would be amazing!!!!!!!

Don't suppose any one has heard rumors? this early in the piece??

cheers

It was clarified that the 4k HDRx mode will be a special mode and will involve some form of trickery which means that it doesn't mean that they'll actually be able to double frame rates anywhere else. It was explicitly stated that it doesn't mean we'll be able to get 48fps 4k since it might be able to do 24fps HDRx.

There are two parallell and understandable train of thoughts on the RED products.

1. Why do we need more than 1080?
2. Only 5k will do!

For stills, 5k is the beef.
For 1080 delivery, 4k is amazing.

The FOV@ 4k is slightly smaller than @ 5k, but the 4k is still S35. 5k is S35+ and thus, some lenses don't cover it.

What would be amazing:

4K HDRx with different REDCode settings for the B Stream.
Say 4K A-Stream at 6:1 and 4K B-Stream at 13:1
that way we could have HDRx and have the possibility to record highlight protection.

Except just 24 fps rule out work in PAL land, that's a lot of people.

I'm fine and happy with the current specs for Scarlet. I am curious though what can happen fps-wise at 4.5k though. More of an interest to utilize more of the sensor.

I can see only 2 reasons, 50hz-lights and 50hz-tv. European tv is still based on 50hz, we do only have 720p50 and 1080i50.
I would still prefer to do everything in 24p and then make a eu-tv-master via speedup and use the original 24p-material for everything else.

BTW, Scarlet can do 25fps @ 4k RC6:1. Look at the specs again. ;)

One thing I was wondering was if it was not possible to enable a monde on 2.40 aspect ratio project and get a few more horizontal lines since you are trowing away a few vertical lines. If my math is right, you could shoot at more or less 4.4K on a 2.40 aspect ratio and have the same number of pixels you would have at 4K 16:9.... This would be great for 2.40 aspect ratio movies!

Look here for different resolutions and fps numbers, like ( 4.8K / 4.9K ):

Actually, I don`t think it would be possible to record more pixels then 8.847.360 pixels at 24 FPS by lowering data rate. Lower data rate if I understand well, takes MORE processing power. I did the math, the maximum resolution at a 2.40 aspect ratio would be: 4598 x 1923 lines = 8.843.877 total pixels more like 4.6K. 4.8K or 4.9K would be impossible assuming you can not mess up with the data rate.

I understand that 5k isn't possible - RED have clearly stated that - but it would be nice to get a WS/Ana/4.5k mode that uses the entire width of the sensor. That way we'd have all the DoF properties of the full 5k sensor (1.3x), but still be within the maximum pixel budget of Scarlet's processing. It'd be the best of both worlds (for narrative work anyway).

It kind of bugs me that MY BRAIN temporaily shut down... Wasn't even thinking...

I wonder if more people would have been happier if Scarlet was 24/25fps only, but on all resolutions including 5k (with HDRx only up to 3k or 4k), with no additional framerate speeds...

It kind of bugs me that 3k can shoot at 48fps which, from a pixel-throughput prespective, is equivalent to 6k at 24fps (right?)

No, 6k would be FOUR times the amount of pixels compared to 3k, so more like 12 fps

I find this funny. I am in the 3K camp! I see the Scarlet as a 3K camera with a 4K mode when needed. I see 3K as the "happy spot". I have a fairly beefy computer, two years ago. And I will have limited SSD's, but I still want my footage to hold up if there is ever any opportunity, and out shine all the HD stuff. You get the HDRX and 48 fps. 4K will help with shakey footage and green screen work, and finish in 3K. Plus I particularly like the 4:3 sensor size dof look (I have been shooting an Olympus DSLR for a while.). So until 4-5 years in the future, most of my work will be in 3K, and I am more than happy with that.

For our shop, the 4K resolution is plenty. I would much rather see 48 fps in 4K so we do not have to deal with the crop on the lower resolutions for slow motion. It is not just the crop, with the wider focal length lenses, you loose much of the shallow DOF. You can get KILLER bokeh with a 50mm f1.4 lens, but with a 2x crop, there would be a huge difference in the bokeh using a 24mm lens to achieve the same framing. We're not expecting high frame performance anywhere like the EPIC, but would sure like to see 50% slo mo at 4K!!!
