  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I was shooting last night at 5k mode, with my 35mm RPP ... and was like wow ... this looks really nice seeing the whole lens compared to what I see cropped on my scarlet. Would be really really really nice to be able to shoot 5k at 24 fps with a 12:1 ... or event 18:1 redcode, would really add a lot of flexibility to the scarlet. Also when moving the 5k down to 4k dcp or 2k dcp (i.e. jpeg2000), I don't notice the extra compression at all. Even cropping the 5k (top/bottom) a bit to fit into the cpu range (if needed), would be fine. From a file size viewpoint, it looks like 5k at 12:1 is very close to 4k at 6:1. Really ... i found the RPP just shine at a fuller frame, and would love to use them at 1.3 crop.

+1 It would be great to shoot anything at 24fps in 5k.

-1 for protecting Epic :-)

I wouldn't mind if the picture was even at 18:1 ... and/or they had to skip some pixels during the wavelet "crunching" ... just have the full sensor would be so nice ... but would still be significantly less then what the epic guys have.

scarlet is a gateway drug to epic.

Or actually, Within a week or so both epic and scarlet will be the gateway to the magic dragon.

looked around on large format pictures the other day... I think that in regards of sensors bigger than I have at the moment is what will always be the strive.

Ohh no ... aside from being addicted to a gateway drug ... I also have sensor envy ;)

... still really ... it's not the 5k I need, I need 3-4k raw and a non-cropped frame.

I don't think this is going to happen. Has nothing to do with protecting Epic – the Scarlet's electronics are simply not up to doubling fps at that resolution, RED has made this very clear from the start.

I'd be a happy guy if they could pull off 25 fps HDRx in 3K instead of 24, and that might happen with some optimizations in the firmware.

I think 1.3 crops should be doable with the current CPU, but I agree on the doubling the fps and running at 4k doesn't sound realistic.

I should of stated in subject heading that I really don't want 5k at 24 fps for the scarlet, but 1.3 crop at 24fps . I was just thinking it would be easier for them to stick with their current algorithms and just double the redcode number with the same 24 fps rate from the sensor memory map. This 1.6 crop is driving me crazy though, I would hate to have to upgrade to dragon or epic, just to minimize the crop.

+1 for 25p HDRx

+1 for 25p HDRx
It's raining hard in California, and i'm doing some shots on the window as the sheets of rain hit the glass ... the hdrx is helping a ton. It's mid-day, so it's dark side on the room side, the water droplets are mid-range (also there's a shade on the window), and the street blows out unless i have hdrx on. So actually ... lmao ... am shooting both 48 fps to get the rain sheets ... then flipping back to hdrx ... to get the rain hitting the glass without blowing out the background. Also ... cause of cropping issues ... i need to be shooting at 5k ... so i am currently recording at 6fps ... and pondering what i can do in post.

I would also prefer 5k/24 over 4k/24-HDRx . Alas, it's been confirmed that it's not possible in the current configuration, so there's no point dwelling... Maybe Dragon will enable 5k/24 on Scarlet (but enable 6k on Epic.) Who knows.

Would be happy with more FPS at 4K, so we can have some proper slow-mo in that resolution. 5K isn't the most important right now.. Well, until Dragon comes along of course, then that'll be more $$$$ to make it closer to an EPIC, and the EPIC to its' next evolution. Impermanence is a lovely truth!

Agreed, I'd be ecstatic with 1.3x crop(i.e. 5k crop) at 4k raw though ... (this has to be doable, it's less overhead in sampling then the 1080p camera's have).

I know that this is a newb question and sorry about it, yesterday for the first time I was playing around with my scarlet and just couldn't find the 1k resolution on the menus to see the option of shooting in 120fps, the lowest I got was 2k can anyone help me figure this out, or which menus do I have to go.

thanks in advance.

1k/120fps is NOT enabled yet. I'm surprised (or rather, shocked) at how many people who've spent the money to get a Scarlet but don't know this. Audio inputs don't have phantom power either... Actually, if you're having audio problems, it's probably due to user error (oh, and CS5.5 does not support Scarlet audio until you update to the latest REDimporter). There's another thing I'm forgetting...

...OH right, do a proper blackshade to reduce blue noise in the shadows and shoot at ISO800 to protect highlights.

Without continuously reading the posts in reduser ... it's not very obvious what is supported by 1k ( ... http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?66210-Scarlet-X-Data-Sheet is the best I've seen ... but even that has the 120 fps which I don't think is functional). 120 fps is real tricky though, there's wierd little choke points to get the 120 fps ... so when ever it happens, that will be nice. For doing feature films though, I view it as a nice to have, not a must have. [ I btw just reread the scarlet 3.0 manual ... that one seems real accurate to me]

What I'm asking for (1.3x crop factor at 4k), has never been promised by RED ... it's merely a request so I can fully utilize my cinema lenses ;)
