  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

«5D Mark III outperforms Scarlet»

Wouldn't a simple focus chart be better for a test comparison.... And I don't get why the sharpening in post if you want to see the camera's performance by it self.

people insist on putting scarlet and hdslr on the same sentence.
ooops, I did it too !

It's all about a big bluff.

The guy is running a commercial blog page about 5D and other DSLRs, etc,... just to give you an idea what's going on there.

That's why he must sometimes to throw a bit of dust in your eye and with that act try out to get more page traffic by that sort of the rules...

I have Canon C300 that's a jumbo jet in terms of HD video quality at the comparison with Canon 5DMK3 as a Cessna small plane...

C300 still with its weak 8-bit codec and some other artifacts (moire/aliasing and the sensor blooming) can't compete with Scarlet-X in most of the shooting situations even in a low light

just because when I swap Noctilux 0.95, Nokton f/1.1 or EF 50mm f/1.2 L on Scarlet-X @ ISO 1600 than it will get those two stops more to see the same as C300 in dark @ ISO 20.000.

BTW, 5DMK3 is a nice photo/video and especially as an affordable FF35mm time-lapse camera but not so extremely better than 5DMK2.

Why not crop the 5d equally before punching in 400% ? Does alexa get compared to dslr on a regular basis or whats up?

I did find it slightly amusing, then I realized he is trying to be serious. HMMM let's add this up: He does not offer his full identity, has several large "BUY IT" links on the bottom and offers no way to leave any comments.

Sorry, but fanboyism aside, this "test" makes no sense. Why would you buy a Scarlet just to shoot 2K and blow it up 400%? Why not just shot 4K and not blow it up at all to show what you are paying for? Is that so revolutionary?

What comes to my mind is the quote in Despicable Me. "Wow. This is garbage. You actually like this?"

Sanjin is right , The guy who owns & runs Cinema 5D also owns a Scarlet & judging from his posts he luvs it. He actually copped flak for being to pro RED on a DLSR forum.

I agree the test is somewhat strange & it really isn't at test but I imagine he's just keeping the DLSR crowd on side. He clearly mentions the test is comparing 2K Scarlet with 5D iii and the Scarlet still wins. Beside that, there's a whole lot of discussion going on about the 5D iii and problems with the codec.....ie mossies in shots & is this camera a true successor to the venerable 5D ii, which still kicks arse when used for timelapse.

To Cinema5D if he is listening...

My advice:
Compare 5D mkIII raw photo and Scarlet 4k raw R3D next time! On real live events & charts.
And take optics with less CA and softness.

Nice try... ;-)

The only reason for blowing up the 1080p-2k downscale to 400% is to show that the deliverables (Scarlet 2k downscaled to 1080p vs. 5Dmk3 at "1080p") look about the same. Which makes sense, since anything more than 1080p is NOT in the average household and not realistically available via streaming (yet). Granted, 4k downscaled to 1080p would presumably look much better (which is why it wasn't included)...

I get REDuser being defensive when things like this come up, but you have to look at it for what it is: trying to encourage 5D users by saying they get somewhat comparable results (to varying degrees) with the only camera they can afford (in this case, the 5Dmk3.) There's no point getting bent out of shape over it. Obligatory car analogy: If someone claims on the road their civic and your ferrari go the same max speed, it's technically true (going past the speed limit is illegal, right?) You wouldn't get pissed off, you'd smile/laugh at the irony (but still love the fact that you have a ferrari.) Currently the speed limit is 1080p, and more often than not, compressed 1080p, so the results can be comparable... of course you'd have to ignore 13+ stops, HDRx, and r3d RAW, but ignorance is bliss.

The real reason people should be upset is why this is even posted here... You wouldn't go to an Alexa forum/page to look up RED information, right?

Want to be fair(or at least close to), scale scarlet 4k footage down to 1080, and compare to 5DmkIII's 1080(tv comparison). Then take a center 1080 crop of a 4k scarlet file and render out from redcine-x pro, and compare to a 400% blow up of the 5dmkIII to simulate a 4k viewing experience in 1080(Big screen simulated comparison...not exactly scientific as I'm not sure it's right). Oh and apply post sharpening and noise reduction to the scarlet footage as it's not done in the camera for a relatively fair comparison, though there really isn't one as these are very different beasts.

...so on further thought not quite sure if this is fair or an apt comparison, any corrections are welcome!

HA... I didn't mean anything personal, Sascha... But I'm sure you knew posting this would only rile people up, right?

The problem is not about explaining the limitation of 1080. But how the test was conducted and what it's trying to say : "in 1080 world there is no difference between 5DmkIII and Scarlet".

Wich is not true. Not only speaking about what you can achieve with more DR, RAW treatment of colors, and other goodies like oversampling... Where the test is not good, is that you can't tell the difference because the first limitation factor is the optic used, and the sensor cropping... and that is not fair.

It's like saying : in a world of blind people, there is no difference between 1080 and SD... the assessment is true but is it the truth?

No problem at all ... I just picked this up on the web and thought exactly the same thing that you lined out so nicely, Mike:
... you'd smile/laugh at the irony (but still love the fact that you have a ferrari.) ...
wanted to share a smile ;-)) Since this is the place where the ferrari owners meet ;-)
