My 512GB Angelbird RED branded Cfast card is giving out this error:

"Media Write Speed Error".

This happens always at around 80% of the card capacity.

It does not matter what kind of format I am writing - be it 6K at 25fps or 2K at 120fps, in REDRAW or Prores - the error is the same.

Also, the card works perfectly fine until it hits the 80% capacity.

Here is a video showing the issue:

Same thing happend with my 512gb angelbird card. Red RAW MQ and HQ at 80% capacity.
Sent it to them trough my dealer, but it seems like I'm unlucky wiht angelbird.
I also have a 128gb sd card (300mb/s) from them wich cannot play 4k 100mb/s clips on my gh5s, even if the 2nd 128gb sd card from them works just fine.

I have been having the same problem. Seemingly at random. I haven't received any definitive answer from red about this. Been going on since I got my komodo.

Let me know if you figure out a solution.

Both my local store and the Angelbird reps confirmed, that is a known issue and will replace by RMA. Problem is, it will take a loooong time for a new card to come even close to where I live, so... yeah, I guess its the waiting game again with RED products as always.

Interesting. So it's bad cards. I guess I'll be contacting them about mine. Thanks for the info.

Have you heard anything back from Angel Bird? I emailed them last week, haven';t heard anything from them. I stress tested 4 cards today, one passed, 3 failed with write speed errors, all in the last 3 minutes of the cards. I imagine they would be ok if you only filled them up halfway, but that kind of sucks. I have 3 more cards that are with a client, Hopefully at least one of them is good and I can have a pair.

And here's even more problems with Angelbird cards. I've just received 4 cards back after all four of them failed by not being used and just stored in a drawer. Haven't been able to test the new ones out, but I keep seeing people having problems with Angelbird cards and I don't know how Red can still have these under approved media. Isn't there any score on reliability to measure if cards are approved or not?

Well, my failed card was the "Red" branded one. I have been planning to get a regular Angelbird aka "AV PRO" instead of a "RED" one.

Now you are saying, that the "AV PRO" are even more prone to errors?

This whole situation is soooo lame... I mean, c'mon, as of 2022 this is a regular media type, not something new and experimental.

The Red branded ones and the Angelbird originals are the same, it's only branded "Red" when sold through Red. Use some other brand instead. The amount of posts about cards failing has been increasing on the Facebook groups, so it's not an isolated issue, regardless of what Red or advocates of Red say.

I just had Angelbird replace 7 512 cards. Hopefully This will resolve the problem. Cards failing is bad, manufacturer replacing almost $4k in cards is pretty good. We'll see if they work ;-)

I have 4 of the 256GB Angelbird CF XT cards. All are in good shape and I can fill the cards with other cameras. With Komodo, I've written them to the full capacity R3D HQ at 40fps. They come up as "not approved" though, is there a known reason why these "XT" cards are not approved?

When Christopher had his troubles with his stored unused media I tested 12X of my RED branded and pure Angelbird cards, particularly the 4X 512GB cards as I hadn't rolled with them in a year, mainly use 1TB media. Popped a card in over the course of two days for full writes and didn't have an issue.

My hopes were it was a firmware thing, but based on his issues it didn't sound like that.

Tracking the few other people online who have posted issues, I suspect there could have been a faulty batch through QC at some point, but all hypothetical at this point. None of the Komodo shooters I know locally have been having issues either. Making it harder to figure out what exactly happened.

Don't think it's the cameras or the world would be burning down right now. Potential bad batch of cards, certainly possible.

If it's a batch thing, Angelbird will be able to discern things via the serials.

In terms of independent research of flash media of all sorts, there is some merit in some cases in regards to media being unused (i.e. not powered) over time. But it hasn't hit camera media for me. There used to be some chatter abouit this online a bit, but it's such a varied concept with so many different controllers and such out there, damn near impossible to wrangle a theory. Not to mention I have old stuff I fire up occasionally. But I can confirm some SATA SSDs have died due to lack of usage and long term storage as well as some USB Thumb Drives. Even hit a few studios here locally looking for critical data. Best case scenario to be safe, store your media in a room temp or cool-ish dry place if you aren't using it for a while just in case.

Hey Phil, hope all is well! Are you using the standard AngelBird 2.0 1TB cards? We are moving into a doc that is going to require long 3-4 hours interviews and we are looking at the 1TB cards. Would love to hear your thoughts on which 1TB card you are running!

Thanks in advance,

Nathan

Angelbird replace my defective RED cards, they have amazing support, so contact them :)

We just had a 7 day shoot running 6x Red 512 cards and 4x 1TB Angelbirds on two Komodo’s. Some interviews running the entire 1TB card until it was full, other b-roll run and gun short takes.

We had multiple write speed error issues at random on multiple cards, this was not affected by the length of the take, some short rolls would have the error… transferring off cards worked fine, reformatting and re-recording also worked.

Not sure how to proceed. just food for thought. The terrifying thing is, now I’m constantly looking at monitor not to frame or focus, but to make sure it’s still rolling as the error message doesn’t pop up external monitors, only on the tiny monitor on top of camera.

Red, PLEASE address this.

What do you mean "Not sure how to proceed" contact Angelbird and have them replace any cards that are defective. It is not a constant on every card. Like Phil said likely just a bad batch or firmware thing with particular group of cards.

Yes, Phil said ‘it’s likely just a bad batch of cards’. I’ve been with Red from the beginning and have had issues pertaining to record on each cam model, except my DSMC2 monstro and 6k magnesium. This included their proprietary media. The dreaded pixel glitch on DSMC 1’s was hell.

I can chalk it up to ‘bad cards’, but that means the four Red cards we bought from Red directly are bad. 1 of the 2x 1TB cards from B&H are bad, and also 1 of the 2x 1TB cards we bought from AMZ are bad?

In my humble opinion, this might** not be just a batch card issue, hence my “not sure how to proceed”. Instead of making assumptions, if some of us can try to trouble shoot, it might be worth our time, Red’s time and Angelbird’s time.

Food for thought, it looks like the error message popped up when we were running a variable frame rate while recording audio to a mixer with a line in feed to cam. Perhaps the problem is buried with buffering/ writing the A/V varying frame rates to card?
