I was really excited about all this but now I wonder if this makes sense for me. Currently, I'm doing a lot of documentary work. If I'm out on a 12-hour shoot with no access to power for charging batteries and no time to dump cards as I go, I'd have to invest an absurd amount of money in power and mags.

So even though the brain is affordable especially given what we know about it, the expensive, proprietary, and required accessories really make me think this isn't going to work out for me.

Then again, I am trying to shift my focus to more narrative work.

In short: I don't know, man. I don't know.

Yeah, thinking about it barebones RTS really needs more than 1 120gb mag and one battery given the battery lasts like 20 mins.

I`d consider minimum 3 batteries to get an hour of power and bare minimum 2 cards. Probably another $2,000 or so for basic consumables.

Jarred channeling Jim again, with the late-night bean spilling. under $6K body, I imagine slightly sub-$10k starter package.

boom!

can't wait to find out how much the naked Raven weighs. that's still the one spec that will define the purchase for me. can this be my RED stealth cam? oh well, can't open all of the packages before Christmas....

OR CAN WE???

Wonder when this would deliver for reals. We are up in the tens for Forged at the moment. CF and MG have had their orders in since NAB. So just wondering realistically if you were the first person at 12.00.01 on Friday morning or whatever - when in 2016 would this arrive.

EF mount is deal-breaker for me. I have shelves full of Nikon and PL glass - but not a single piece of Canon. It's as much use to me as a chocolate condom, sorry.
Adaptors... And who knows, the EF-version might not be the one and only version of the RAVEN.

One more thought, the left side has been left completely in the dark. Maybe the RAVEN has an integrated sidehandle? :P

One thing worries me though...

If this has the weapon body and will be eligible for upgrade to a next generation sensor after Dragon then what about us with an Epic Dragon? I mean, from what I gathered, the only way for us to get a next gen sensor is to upgrade to Weapon AND upgrade to the new sensor, which would cost as much as just buying a new camera. That's kind of a strange handling of the Dragon family if it happens.
It would mean that if we with an Epic Dragon would want to get new sensor tech, it would probably be through selling our Epic Dragon and getting a Raven, which in many aspects is a downgrade of our equipment, just to "stay in the game."

All things point to Epic Dragon being the end of the line, whatever has been said that it's "part of the Dragon family". In my opinion, if a next gen sensor is being developed, it should also be made avalible to Epic Dragon owners. It would be really strange if Raven owners continue on together with Weapon owners and Epic Dragon owners who don't own a castle and a bank would be left behind with an only option to downgrade to Raven.

Either that or whenever a new sensor is avalible, the weapon upgrade cost might be lower than it is now or put at a discount in order to push Epic Owners into weapon territory.
Personally I would be happy if Red released a Weapon upgrade that isn't carbon, doesn't have ProRes and is just a weapon and board upgrade of the current Epic in order to have it ready for a next gen sensor.

I'm not sure I fully agree that it's encroaching on the Epic Dragon to much, but you're right, it's pretty close. 4K 120 is a huge draw.

Jarred is there any chance you fill the gap between the Raven at $5,950 and the Weapon MG at $34,500? Heck I'd jump on board with a Epic Dragon inside the same body as the Raven with a fixed mount and the same weight if it was doable. I would almost do the Raven but I have a hard time wanting to leave 5K and 6K as an ability behind.

(rubbing my eyes) so, what did I miss?

I am pretty sure Jarred has Kelly text him an " all clear" on the days I fall asleep before midnight...

...also seriously can't believe anyone would complain about the price....Ursa Mini is $4995 bare naked. And it won't have nearly the feature set that I strongly suspect this will - all that tantalizing wifi control baked in....mini tops out at 60p v. 120p for Raven. Mini will weigh 5 lbs. v Raven at 3 lbs. No contest.

The main thing the Mini will have over Raven is the free copy of Resolve! :001_cool: - nothing to see here!

I don't really like comparisons to the highest of the low end specs, but this is a very reasonable price point for all of this new tech.

This should be designated a no-bitch zone. Little Raven is going to kick ass.

I think there are a fair amount of people in this boat, underestimating the initial investment. Many people confuse "ready to shoot" with "ready to work", they are not the same thing. If your are not already invested in the RED eco-system, your looking at closer to $15-20k.

240GB Mini-mag records 63 minutes of 4k 5:1 ( $1400 / each ) x6
RED Brick provides 120 minutes of run time ( $450 / each) x4
==============================================
In batteries and media alone your looking at $10k for one days shoot

Ehm, whistling, looking into the sky: "nothing".... Don't bother reading the last few pages. ;)

Hehe.

You only missed the sound of a thousand wallets opening ;)

People this camera is obviously not in the Ursa mini 4.6k tier. It will be fun comparing them side by side spec-wise come Friday but I think we all know that they aren't in the same league.

It is too soon to be feeling the Dragon is being encroached on too much. In practical tests for shows for like Netflix etc.., the true sweet spot for Red 4K is from 5K reduced to 4K at least. Or at least that is the opinion of professionals who test it. If they have performed some special processing magic and the 4K of Raven is a slight downsample then it would really be encroaching a little. But that remains to be seen. I think it would be kind of great if it was but it will be a while till we are seeing this in action side to side. I can't believe Red would cannibalize their own line to that extent. But what I do see happening here is the RedUser starting to split in an interesting way. You have indie and content people going one way, and then those who want 8K etc going another. Different needs. The question with Raven is simply going to be that when the producer comes to the point of decision for 4K acquisition and has the DP test, would Raven 4K hold up against a down sampled Dragon. I kind of feel I know the answer already but if in fact it held up then Raven is a monster - and many might consider switching to it if they are making low budget content, TV and indie projects.

Now for the overexpectations: if we've got lens motors and electronic control... what about that Built-in ND !? ;)
