  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

-4k Redcode, downscaled from 6k or 5.5k window of the Dragon sensor (maybe with safety area). Up to 120fps

REDCODE RAW is a compressed raw stream. Scaling isn't part of that. At least not yet.

I'd also have to agree. If a speedbooster is not possible to achieve S35, I'd have to pass. I would appreciate and respect it as a cool offering though.

Honestly I could care less about the perceived focal length OR external/internal adapters. I care about the physical sensor size as it directly relates to performance and mft just doesn't stack up(either in image quality or with RED's previous track record). Unless they've made some kind of quantum leap in sensor design.

Let's hope the 120fps isn't some kind of re-sampled upscale that is becoming the trend nowadays. Had I been able to ask a question, that's probably what I would have wanted to know, that or the RTS price :)

Here's my dream specs, as long as we're all playing along at home.

4.5K (but will be happy w/4K) Redcode
120 FPS
Canon *or* Canon motion mount fixed option - I'd trade the stops for the built-in ND, if I could have a choice.
5:1 compression
4.5'' monitor part of the standard bundle.
Shoots up to 50 mins on a Redvolt
Bult-in microphone of a GOOD quaity. Also a decent mic jack with some decent preamps. A good stealth camera could sure use this....
approx. $10K - $12K basic bundle pricing - would be happy with less, like everyone on the planet, but not sure how realistic that is.
Can support the existing side handle - maybe? would like to put mine back in play, especially if the weight drops.

ANNNND....under or just at 3 lbs. total weight with camera, mag, battery, and monitor. That's the biggie. For me, anyway.

I can agree with that. I'm not a fan of adapters and if it was a MFT sensor size, I would respectively pass.

I kinda felt like asking the price was kinda lame, i thought it was nice of Jarred to throw out an answer to a question, asking about 5k recording was a way of getting some important information without ruining the suspense!

I wouldn't get too down if it's 4K or 4.5K only. 4.5K is pretty much Academy 35mm in width, 4K a hair smaller.

I think if RAVEN lands somewhere in there it provides enough headroom for Epic Dragon, Scarlet Dragon, and Weapon Dragon bodies to exist in the same ecosystem for the most part. Though it looks like RAVEN is getting some of the Weapon enhancements like WiFi, which will be a big deal for some.

I see a market segment where this camera can certainly exist based off of what Jarred's teased. When Scarlet-X came out a while ago it was my "gateway drug" to Epic, Epic Dragon, and eventually Weapon. More importantly it was providing images my clients enjoyed which has kept me busy. I think Raven will land and be fairly accessible price-wise, though maybe not "Crazy Gideon" priced as some are thinking.

The need for Raw is being tempered by Prores 444 that can record 15 stops of DR.

RAW wins on two counts: it takes up no more space than is necessary and provides maximal image quality.

My personal wish list:
4K 120 (would be amazing)

Those two items have been confirmed.

Let's hope the 120fps isn't some kind of re-sampled upscale that is becoming the trend nowadays.

There is no way that Red would do that. Red does not do upscaling, line skipping or pixel binning. :-)

Bomb Squad reps ran for their lives after Jarred Land leaked news of a new, inexpensive Red camera.

Witnesses say that this man was last heard muttering the words "4k? So what, my iPhone shoots 4k now!"

I feel like this announcement may come along with a 3rd party announcement for a new drone. The name and everything suggests it's meant for the aerial market. Would make sense for Red to team up with a drone company instead of releasing this and then leaving users to figure out how to get it up in the air.

Mine-as-well dominate the aerial market! It is blowing up!

How long before shooting 5k (single chip bayer) will be accepted as
the honest minimum specification for 4k delivery?

In the comming years marketing of Arri 65 and new Sony Xk will redefine 4k specs, sure Red has the Weapon
but it needs to move its base users up to >4.5k.

BM will offer 4.6k in the mini, Raven has to at least match that....
Perhaps refocussing on Jims goal, affordable high quality for the masses?
Give me core horsepower (dr and res) and less "features".
8k raven 96fps 15stops dr for $25k? Isnt that more in line with the good old days?

When people say 4.5K+ gives "true" 4K, is that because if the sensor photosite count is exactly 4K, the outer photosites don't have enough surrounding photosites to determine the most accurate color value during debayering?

No, it's because of the whole Bayer-concept. For full resolution you'd want each photo site to be full spectrum. But with Bayer, as you know, the color components are offset from each other and the actual 'per pixel' color is dependent on averaging (on the whole sensor, not just borders).

Compare this to Canon's Cinema line cameras that use a 4k sensor/Bayer pattern for 1080p delivery. Also in the new C300 mkII, all of the color lattices from the Bayer are first individually up-sampled (filling in the holes where the other colors normally would reside) and then the 4k frames are created. I think the C300 mkII approach is pretty interesting. It probably helps against aliasing.

Every manufacturer uses what they deem best for their respective products.

4k @120fps needs some serious horsepower that could probably do 5k @24fps at least I guess. And I don't see Red limiting the cam features for marketing and lineup reasons. So I agree with the possibility of Red using cut parts from the sensors that didn't pass for the 8k camera. That would explain the 4K limitation. They can invest in better asics then. And that lower resolution would not hurt Scarlet dragon, Epic dragon and Weapon too much.
