  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

#4K4ALL

Well said. I think there will be some disappointed people out there when they realize Raven is the next step up from Scarlet-Dragon instead of the entry option but it makes a lot of sense when you think about it.

What about"4K4ALL" then? People expecting more than 4K are wrong, Red would not tease with all these 4K grabs and titles if it could do more. It means its resolution is less than any Red camera in the actual line. The purpose seems to be the price. To get a cheap price they have to make some compromise. At the same time they offer 120fps. So i guess it's maybe a smaller sensor which needs less power (less than S35 with a 4K dragon sensor). Maybe some compression compromise too.

Agreed. The current "teasing" gives no indications of a higher resolution than 4K. I still think "4ALL" is referring to budget. MOST people took it this way and Jarred isn't dumb...he would know how that would be interpreted.

I think they're just going to massively drop the price on Scarlet-X cameras. That way, they don't have to come up with a weird compromise. I mean, Raven's in a Weapon body. You price 4K 120fps under a Scarlet-X and the universe will start to implode onto itself. If someone's in the market for a Scarlet-X, they'd best wait for the news that's about to come out.

That makes sense. Wonder if it means a price cut is coming to everything (other than Weapon line) then...

Wouldn't be surprised. Maybe an all-but-Weapon price cut will allow for a "crossgrade" path from Epic-Dragon to Raven. Oh the thinks you can think.

Yeah...Raven fills out the Weapon line (on the bottom), bumps the whole line down in price...starting with CF Dragon. Discontinue MX as well maybe.

Is the Raven a compact, "entry level" (relatively speaking) camera - OR - will it be Weapon JR/Scarlet2?

There's plenty of good reasons to unify the form factor established by the Weapon.

There's plenty of camera sales to be made down market from the Weapon, RED's most expensive camera to date.

There's plenty of hints that the Raven will offer features and capabilities unlikely to fit into an under $10K shooting kit price point.

Which level of camera, at what price range, might find a still untapped market niche?

Clearly RED wants to lead the digital cinema space and they have chosen their Weapon for that crusade. Developing the Weapon was likely not a low cost endeavor. Putting the technology developed during that process to work in a downmarket product is good business.

The second generation of RED cameras was the Epic and Scarlet, which, arguably, were not different enough from each other to expand RED's market presence - i.e., if you couldn't ROI an Epic you probably couldn't ROI a Scarlet (yes, there are exceptions, but outside of RedUser, not so much). If I were running RDC, I'd probably do whatever I could to get the price point down on Raven to expand my market and get back to some of the economies of scale advantages that helped make RDC successful out of the gate. OTOH, RDC might be more focused on protecting their prestige position in the industry and avoiding the brutal margin pressures in the lower end.

Don't know much, but I do know if it shoots 4k/120fps, it isn't going to be cheap. There are only a handful of cameras on the market with this kind of horsepower and none of them are below $30k.

Would make a lot more sense if Raven sat above scarle/epic & below weapon with price cuts all around.

Raven12 and Raven24... interesting. If that refers to frame rates, perhaps they are going after the SLR realm after all?

Untapped? I think everyone is being served 4k now, if they want it.

If there is no new tech in Raven, you could consider development costs to be nil. That enables a lot of cost cutting. If that is the goal.

I don't buy into your hypothesis at all and clearly want different things from this camera if I am to buy it.

This is sort of what I meant about this becoming frustrating, Ben. You're talking about the camera you want, whereas most of us are discussing what RED might release.

The discussion I wanted was more of an intellectual challenge of fitting a new, cheaper RED camera into their eco system, making considerable cuts from existing products and try to make sense out of the teasing campaign, hitting a price of $7-8000 ready to shoot including normal camera accessories.

With the latest leaks, including WiFi, Redcode and high frame rates I think Jarred was too generous with #4K4ALL. The obvious interpretation is "for all people", but the product we're seeing revealed here bit by bit can hardly come in at that price point.

Now that we know we are talking about different things, I see no point in taking it further.

Raven's Fly ………………. Drone/Ronin

Its definitely a drone camera. Going to wait patiently for more info though. If I like it ill buy. If not, going to pull trigger on ursa mini 4.6k.

Raven looks Grey (like Scarlet), while Weapon is black (like Epic)...

Screw it; I may as well post this myself.

Also, if it is, in fact, fixed stills-lens mount (m43, ef, or otherwise), then it most definitely won't be serving the mid-to-high-end (as a drone cam or otherwise).
