For corporate work the Dragon is perfect, but for Cinema i see only 2 solutions: Film, or Alexa (when you don't have the budget).

20 minutes Arriraw is enough (i only have 8 minutes with my Red one Mx), plus they will certainly make bigger Cfast cards..

And for your last question, the answer is simple, the Alexa mini got brought into this because people shoot mostly at 24fps, they love the arri look (the most filmic digital camera right now), and they need a light system, the Arri mini is the answer..

Red for corporate work? are you serious?

I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion, no matter how absurd.

FWIW I'm not keen on the idea of fixed Nikon & Canon mounts. High-end cameras deserve high-end lenses. Yes, we have the Zeiss Milvus range but they are not set up for basic cinema use, even though I suspect they'll have excellent performance. Just my 2 cents.

If you want affordable 4K, buy a Sony A7 and spend your leftover money on really good lenses. I think RED is aiming a bit higher than that, though (Redcode).

Why do people think it won't use RED media? I'm sure RED's media is a good source of revenue for them. Why give that up?

Anyway, I think that from the photo we can deduce:

- non-interchangeable mount, quite likely Canon EF
- no built-in microphones (they are obviously missing from the front)
- probably aluminium (because same styling as new aluminium RED LCD)
- similar to Weapon form factor

And from #4K4ALL we get 4K of course.

But maybe that's just chosen because it's catchier than 4.5K4ALL or 4.7K4ALL.

Personally I'd guess a little higher on the spec list than bare minimum 4K 30fps for $4300.

I'd guess 4.5K 48fps and probably $6000. It it's any cheaper, the accessories look too expensive. EG the REDVOLT Expander would cost as much as the camera! And you want reasonably high FPS to smooth out all those drone and gimbal shots you'll be using it on :P

Actually why not 4.7K... 0.1K more than the Ursa Mini. I think the people at Blackmagic would get the joke :)

RED has certain values that define it and it's philosophy. Things like RAW and "upresing not spoken here"...
I also see the term "Scarlet Weapon" thrown around a lot - which makes no sense at all. Weapon is a camera name (like Epic or Scarlett) - not a technology (like DSMC, Dragon, etc). Saying "Scarlet Weapon" makes as much sense as saying "Scarlet Epic"...
4K4ALL would need to adher to these and at the same time really differentiate from the existing lineup.
IMHO if RED wanted to stick to their core values (RAW, etc) - in order to cater to the masses they will need to drop some key technical elements of the current lineup. The main thing that comes to my mind is the media. I don't thing this new camera will use REDMAGs. Even the newly announced 120GB is still $800 - which can hardly fit into 4K4ALL mantra. You can literarily buy a 4K cameras for similar $$$..:
Given that the new camera is most likely going to be "just" 4K - using industry standard media (like SD or CF) should suffice.
Also given that cameras like GH4, that deliver more then acceptable 4K footage, cost less then $2K - RED would need to price the new camera into sub-$5K realm. This is as far as I am willing to speculate...
So a 4K RAW camera that records to SD/CF and costs less then $5K would fit the bill IMHO...

Peter, I agree wholeheartedly on "Scarlet Weapon" making no sense. This will be the Raven or whatever.

But... I still bet you $10 it uses RED MINI-MAGs and not SD/CF cards :)

Cheap camera, expensive media (and the profit on that media and accessories perhaps subsidizes the camera) totally fits #4K4ALL, I think..

The cash-strapped indie folks can do without the nice accessories and deal with short recording times by frequently offloading footage to their laptop.

If they're running around with a drone or a gimbal, they can get two 128GB MINI MAGs for $800 each, and offload each time they have to recharge their drone's battery, haha!

My belief is that any camera product in the RED lineup will at minimum be a 35mm sensor. A smaller sensor, could easily be justified in the $3-$5K range. Lets stay at the current price point of the lowest cost Scarlet. If the price is better, we celebrate. But as a professional audience, we can at least moderate our expectation.

Whats that old RED saying? Something like, "things change, expect it"

I'd saying works perfectly here.

They have no reason to protect the Scarlet MX as far as price anymore. It's a somewhat older camera if they truly are releasing something that will cost less than the Scarlet. It's like anything else things cost less as time goes on. Look at the cost of media. 4 x 256GB SSD's used to cost $10,000. Look how much it costs for a 512 GB now.

I think the change is what makes RED awesome. They're no afraid to shake up the industry. Heck they're not even afraid to shake up what their own users are using. I think the moment they stand still and build the same product with a slight upgrade year after year is where they'd be like everyone else. To this date I don't think any one really knows what to expect RED to release. I welcome the change even if it devalues something I use.

Thanks RED for keeping us on the edge of our seat every year, I mean month, I mean week... It sure is entertaining.

And like others have echoed. I don't think they have to try and compete with BMD or even Canon for that matter. I think RED has their own map and is really just there to give Cinematographers, DP's and shooters in general the best tool possible.

Bruce was pretty dead on - cheap or cheaper camera + expensive media. But not both at the same time.

Ok so some of you on here know that after my 150+ posts 5I'm not a Red owner yet but I'm working hard toward it. That said I am very anxious to hear this announcement. It could mean I can finally become part of the family sooner than later. I really want this camera to use, or have the option to use, Mini Mags, Side SSD, 7" Touch Screen and all that. Because one day I do plan to dive into an Epic or Weapon and it would be really great to already have the components to hit the ground running with a Weapon. So give me the option to kit it out with all the high-end components if I desire to.

I'm sitting on pens and needles here. Please make it Red code and not just Pro-Res.

Come on Jarred... I can't sleep right now.

Or Peter Jackson...or Stephen Soderbergh...

I like what Luke Neumann is suggesting; $4k RTS 4k RED -- MX or Dragon (though I doubt Dragon). The problem now is that even if a Scarlet-X brain was free, it'd still cost $7500 for a decently shootable package, and that's a huge deal breaker. Sony and BM have $5k 4k/raw options AND you're shooting out of the box, so I'm not sure what else #4k4All could provide, other than super-affordable red ecosystem.

Also, I don't buy the idea that *not* having modularity (particularly with the mount) is somehow "cheaper" to produce... Seems more like "protecting your high end" than anything.

I'm excited... but I do hope they hurry with some substantial details.

Give the handle . . . sell them the blades

Cheap brain . . . RED acce$$ories to make it work

Yeah, and that's what they've done so far... But the times are a-changing, and everyone else (though maybe not Canon) has shootable 4k/raw kit for less than the cost of RED's "handle"...

Dragon's great for corporate work. Doc work too. Not absurd... been doing it since 2008.
Yeah I really can't think of anything I haven't been able to shoot with the Dragon. I use it in the snow, dust, rain, sets and office buildings. Anyone who says they can't use it somewhere is just making excuses IMO.

Bingo.
