4k x 4k recording option

The proposed spec for weapon, on paper, could make it the go to camera for imax and Dome productions.

Delivery for these productions is 4k x 4k

I am wondering if it is prudent and feasible for Red to impliment a 4k x 4k (side crop) recording option
to reduce the data burp?

Yes, having the extra real estate of 8k x 4k to reposition is handy but at the cost of additional data along with restricted lens choice......

Well, there's another aspect to it, you could do it for VR or a dome IMAX theatre.
You can't really get the 180 degrees view with just a wide angle and the Alexa 65. Wide angle, 8K in a 4X4 would create a true 180 degree experience.

On Weapon 8K Dragon it will be possible to capture a 4320x4320 180 degree fisheye image using the appropriate lens.

Using more cameras like in a sensible VR Rig and stitching the images will lead to higher quality images however.

Don't know if there will be a 1:1 aspect ratio filming mode, but there will be likely a 4:5 and 6:5 mode at 8K, which would be a moderate crop for 1:1.

Yeah, but for a high res VR or dome IMAX, wouldn't that be too little resolution? A quarter of those screens are like two times larger than some regular cinema screens.

Several members here were at the digital Imax presentation at the TCL theater in Hollywood a few months ago, and they went into detail as to why the modified Alexa 65 worked well for their 90-foot by 40-foot screen. My impression is that this camera is already the go-to camera for Imax, and has been for 6 months.

I believe I'm aware of that. Arri has an interesting sales pitch on "it's not the number of pixels... it's the quality of the pixels." So that's one way to sell their cameras.

I personally think a great DP can make good pictures with almost any reasonable camera, and we've reached the point where there's a lot of good choices for 4K or higher images nowadays. To me, a lot boils down for workflow ease, cost, flexibility, reliability, and so on. 8K / 6K / whatever K may be the least-important part of the equation. I'm much more concerned about dynamic range, color accuracy, noise, and how the camera handles highlights.

Yes, a significant increase over the Arri .

Proposed pixel count for weapon is greater than the 65 and the day rate of weapon will probably be a fraction of the Arri.
Certainly worth considering.
