  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4K over HDMI from Red Dragon ??

While I wouldn't put it past Red to design something with HDMI 2.0 included in a module, I imagine it would likely happen in the next brain or even possibly through a camera upgrade itself.
HDMI1.4 can do 4k, up to 30hz at UHD and 24hz at real 4k.

The HDMI-chips in Dragons and maybe even MX brains might be capable of doing that. But the more tricky question is, can current brains internally debayer to 4k? The existence of the Broadcast-4k-module might be the answer to that.
 
Just to remind you of something what RED previewed a while ago: tethered recording over Gig-E. There is lots of potential, with live monitoring and streaming in full-res(!) over a laptop being one of the possible applications. Transcoding to 4k on a computer, with ROCKET-power and realtime-colorgrading? Should be doable. ;)

Yeah, thats not a module, but maybe a even better solution for some scenarios.

I hope RED gives access to that via their SDK.

So theoretically, couldn't there be an external recorder type device that takes the Gig-E input and is able to debayer that, record it to prores etc, and or, send out a 4k signal via HDMI?
 
I wonder how much latency would result from Jarek's theoretical pipeline? Measured at the image displayed from the HDMI spigot would it appear in sync?

There are a lot of valuable use cases possible with the GigE live out feed even if there is a little latency, and even more if there isn't...

Thats what i'm talking about, but i was thinking about a software-solution for all those (fast enough) new laptops with UHD-screens and HDMI2.0-ports or a "PC in a small box".

Dedicated device, doable, but way more complicated. Getting some chips to debayer RED-footage, with all the licences and a so on? ;)

Between this and the image you see through the brains HDMI/SDI or on the RED-LCD there will be a visible delay for sure.
