Well Vimeo just joined the 4K streaming masses..... Along with todays announcement from Roku for 4K Roku TV.

Amazon turned 4K on a few weeks ago and Netflix was already there. Youtube was the first.

I think that covers the top video streaming providers, joined by Comcast last month as well as Directv UHD packages.

And I am sure there will be a whole whack of 4K hardware revealed this week at CES to take advantage of all those options.

We have been saying " This is gonna be the year of 4k" forever now and most of you have been shooting 4k for almost decade, but this week may be the week when the switch finally has flipped to widespread consumer 4K accessibility... the last and likely most critical piece of the whole 4k puzzle.

In the last couple months we have seen a huge uptick of content from the last few years that was originally finished in 1080p go back and be reconfirmed to 4k for new distribution so now you might want to send those producers from those shows you worked on a little reminder that you have 4K in the bank.

And you are probably now safe to now tell all your doubtful friends " see I told you so "

:)

Happy new year everyone.

NICE!!!!!
This is good information!!

Well gosh. Those folks who were saying 4K would never take off, as recently as last year even, must be happy :)

Seriously though. For those creating and viewing moving pictures this might be the most exciting time.

Thankfully 4K and 4K+ is what I'm all about and it's the right direction for the industry as a whole. It's beautiful.

I've had a 4K+ camera for 3 years now. Time to get a 4K TV :)

Great news indeed.

A GREAT BIG THANK YOU to RED for not compromising, setting the standards and kicking the industry's ass forward!!!

Going to be a lot of people's LTO tapes getting loaded to get some old projects released in 4k!

Broadcast will have a hard time keeping up...they still seem stuck at 720p/1080i.

This is other example of the paradigm "shift" were seeing in content delivery.

I'm already hearing rumblings amongst my broadcast clients that the future of networks may not always be via a "cable box" - but instead within a couple of years each NETWORK (ie NBC, HBO, SHOWTIME) may also exist as an APP you subscribe to via a popular platform (Apple, Android, Xbox, etc) - with 4K of course being a major selling point.

The landscape of television and content is starting to shift under our feet.

The subscription models of Netflix and HBO-GO are a fascinating preview of what may be the future of television - consumed in 4K via subscription over the net, VS generally more expensive, bundled cable broadcast packages that can only deliver 720p/1080i.

Because cable is struggling to even deliver 1080p, 4K may well become the "straw" that breaks traditional cable's back. With 4K streaming becoming more standardized, I wonder how many more consumers start to abandon cable alltogether?
