  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4K EDIT in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5

Thanks for uploading. I've been curious about the ease of editing 4k. I have a similar PC so I've been shopping editing software. I've been leaning to CS5.5. I didn't see the RED rocket, hows the speed going in?

No Rocket. :sifone:

I thought this was common knowledge. I'm editing a feature using CS5.5 on a three-year-old Macbook Pro using six daisy-chained Firewire 800 drives! And it actually works.

I don't miss FCP in the least.

Doug, all of my footage is already on hard drives.

Yep. It works. FCP does not.

Weight of the world off my shoulders knowing I don't have to spend 7k+ on a mac pro. Might comfortably buy a Scarlet now with some change for Europe in the summer!

Very interesting that you use After FX to convert the footage into DPX. I'd never thought of that.
Currently, wiht EOS 5 timelapse footage, I use DXO Optics Pro to do the initial lens compensation and any minor edits, then batch convert to 100% jpeg, and import into Premiere CS5.5 as an image sequence.

After that I can bounce down to a 4K intermediate file using the Cineform Neo codec, which supports 4096x2034 and produces very nice workable files.

My machine is a self-built W7x64 PC with a Dual Xeon board, 16GB of RAM and two raids, one Raid 1+0 for data like video, one Raid 1 for samples (for the audio side), and an SSD system drive. Using an NVidia Quadra I can also get good smooth scrubbing too.

You're right, it's amazing what we can do these days for very little money.

I am able to edit with premiere with RED 5k squence , with 1/4 playback and still resolution . Without rendering. It seems in terms of cards - the quadrio card is doing the magic. i have a fx 4800 on mac.
I am trying to get my matrox mxo2 max to work also , but it seems to keep crashing premiere. As for red rocket, i have not installed it yet . do you think it would help?

Nice - thanks for sharing Tom.

Thanks Tom. Clearly threads like this make a huge difference to people.
If your ever bothered doing your workflow in greater depth.
I am sure many people would be interested, I certainly would.

Best Wishes
Lliam

Love it- operating with the hood open and your Noctua Fan blasting
with NO QUADRO Card in sight!

Did your friend have a chance to benchmark the system with PPBM5?

Any systems specs or benchmark results to share?

PC + Adobe = EPIC.

Yeah, my friend who built the system was forum member Peter Chang. I think he did benchmark it, and it tore shit up for that pricetag. Keep in mind, he built this system in Spring 2010!!! It's still near the top of the food chain.

Even though I have been editing 4K R3Ds on 4K timelines natively, real-time since 2009 (Vegas Pro 9) I am still amazed by how easy it all is. Today, it is easy to get 1/2 res playback with 4K files on regular mainstream desktops which cost ~$1200 or so. Not to mention, full-res 3K real-time for Scarlet footage. By next month, with Core i7 3930K/3960X and a bit of overclocking, we could be talking about full-res 5K playback for EPIC. Ye olde Core i7 970 already does 1/2 res (and really, at 2.5K, that's the highest monitors go on a budget) with the right storage subsystem.

After downloading the Camera Codec Pack (http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=26829) I now have native 5K EPIC R3Ds and native 5+K CR2s on the same timeline with Vegas Pro 11. With the codec pack downloaded, the same could work for PPCS5.5 as well.
