  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4K Cameras Approved by Netflix

There is a ton of 2k stuff on Netflix though, like Fargo, which was shot on a Alexa and with half-century-old Cooke lenses (season 2), and on a Alexa mini (season 3). Looks like, if you are Dana Gonzales, you have the saying, which tools you want.

They are not advertised as a 4K shows. Also whats this have to do with DP?

Doesn't hurt the popularity though. In the real world, nobody really cares so much about 4k.
Especially since - with the average internet speed - Netflix compresses the shit out of the material.
Even if it is advertised as "4K", with the massive compression, over 80% of the captured image information goes out if the window anyway.

Have you ever streamed 4K via netflix? If you internet speed sucks of course you gonna get shitty compressed encode. In real world people care about 4K thats why they are paying more money to stream it in 4K.

4K delivery on VOD is about three things in my view.

1) Market separation - 4K is not available on Broadcast, it is not reliably available theatrically, the amount of original theatrical content delivered in 4K by studios is very low. It is not highly available on 4K Blu ray yet. Stipulating 4K origination for original content ensures that Netflix as a home of original content is markedly different from other outlets, which makes them more attractive to a sizable audience of people who have 4K tvs.

I always thought this was the case when they first got into it.

I would love to hear what they have to say about the Scarlet-W.
Didn't ask,
The conversation was to confirm the RED EPIC DRAGON.

I'll talk to Netflix again and ask about Scarlet-W & Raven so to have the info here for those interested.

I'm pretty sick of the debate about 4K or not. I don't think 4K is anything special today, let's just call it the new "1080p", who wants to shoot 720p? Instead of saying that we need to focus on other things than resolution (as a critique of 4K), let's just accept 4K as the standard and deal with it. Imagine if we were all accepting this and the only discussion about resolution had to do with getting the best 4K quality possible. That way we would automatically discuss the other aspects of the image. I think Netflix did good to push the accepted standards, it pushed the industry forward. But we have reached the point of diminishing returns with 4K resolution for home cinema, let's just march forward with that as our new "1080p standard".

It's a more common way of thinking here at REDUSER, but the only company holding the mentality of "not needing 4K" is Arri and it hurts the industry because it keeps the unnecessary debate going. Can't they just get their foot out their asses and release a 4K or higher s35 Alexa which takes over the regular Amira/AlexaXT market? Then I guarantee the resolution debate will pretty much drift off into the background noise.
