  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Does cs6 run better on mac or pc?

It runs great on both. It really boils down to your OS preference along with which other apps you use, ProRes support if you need it, that sort of thing. With the PC you have more freedom to configure hardware.

Anecdotally - I've noticed more Mac users having problems than Win7 users.

And there have been many threads on the speed advantage of Win7 over Mac, even comparing a boot camp speed to the OS X speed.

The speed advantage grows when you compare the far faster boxes you can build for Win7 with Mac's fastest.

I own a Mac Pro, but now only use it for Logic Pro and occasionally Final Cut 7, but not for Adobe CS6 which is on Win7.

I have it on both, but in PC works better because graphics cards are faster than the Mac, but you can not export to ProRes. I use CIneform for my master.

Not wanting to sound like a troll, but ANY program that runs on both, will ALWAYS run better on a PC. For half the price.

Sorry for getting trigged, but... :p

Resolve runs _faster_ on OSX, at least the last time I checked. And half price compared to what? I.e. an iMac is not overpriced, neither are MacPro's or MacBooks if you look at the specs and try to build/buy a similar Windows based system... Last time we needed a small server, the cheapest option was a MacMini with OSX Server license. Cheaper than building a Linux box without a commercial license...

But runs _better_ on PC/windows? Come on... I've been a Windows user for many, many years, and I've been using OSX since it arrived, but I also use Windows. BUT really, runs better on Windows? When it comes to integration, robustness, user experience and interface rendering (i.e. fonts). Windows is far behind... I would dare to say a shitty OS compared to OSX.

Should software developers optimise OSX variants better? Yes! There are some really bad implementations...

Completely agree. You can run OS X, various flavours of Linux and unix and if you must Windows. Theres no issue with CS6 on an Apple platform.

I remember reading straight from Adobe that Premiere, After Effects, etc. runs better on Windows than OS X due to OS X limitations. Looking for the source. I don't think there is much of a difference though.

I would guess that main limitation are the lazy people at Adobe, as Jobs so eloquently put it... :p

CS5 for mac was 32 bit. CS5 for windows was 64 bit. That's the origin of Adobe is faster on PC. They are both now 64bit so it's negligible. However, you do have a slightly more robust graphics card support on PC, but that is dwindling.

This will quickly degenerate into a flame war, but ... if you want yesterday's technology today, go OS X.

I own both, and Windows runs runs circles around OS X.

The 3rd party tools are always better (which really influences the user experience).

Both have crappy file managers out of the box, but if you compare Win7's 'Directory Opus' http://www.dopus.com/ to OS X's 'Path Finder' http://cocoatech.com/pathfinder/ - Win7 comes out light years ahead (and I deal with files a lot).

The only tool (and I spend a lot of time looking for tools) that's totally better on OS X is 'ControllerMate' for mouse control (nodal and very cool) http://www.orderedbytes.com/controllermate/

Apple can't be trusted either, look what they did to the FCP7 user base. I won't do business with people who screw their user base.

But for the thread originator, read thru the bug reports on this forum, and the threads where users realize how much faster Win7 is after comparing themselves, and make an informed decision on your own not based on any one single post.

Thanks for the info guys. I have apple everything at the moment but am definitely leaning towards building a PC now for CS6 (never thought i would say that!). Mainly due to cost and the current neglect the Mac Pro is getting.

And perhaps i am angry my iphone 5 is so shit! ha!

Ive always used Mac mainly but Ive used a lot of PC's on gigs as well since Avid works well on both......Ive always liked Macs better due to Apple's focus on creative needs with their software. Sadly that seems to be changing.

I am still on a 2011 tower but as OSX becomes more iOS, and more power apps get killed in a slide of hand for stripped down simplicity, and the walls in their garden get taller, moving forward I am very close to just switching to Windows.

Apple breaks my heart more and more everyday. I will wait to see what they do with the tower, but that may be the last straw for me.

I recently switched from Mac to PC for work with RED footage and After Effects - the great news is CS6 works very well on both Mac and PC. I'm quite happy working on the PC but I have a Mac to the side for normal stuff - web, email, file management etc which are OS things I find are still much better on the Mac. A maxed out PC paired with a low-ish end Mac is a great combo... best of both worlds.

It depends on the workload. Testing on identical hardware with CS5.5 (read below) some run about the same, some faster on Windows. Things start to really speed up on Windows once you add a ton of effects, particularly GPU accelerated. If you are just doing a straight edit, the difference is within 5%. This is all based on CS5.5 testing by the way - I have completely abandoned OS X since. Adobe's official word as of CS5.5 was indeed that R3D Rocket playback is faster on Windows due to "OS limitations". Not sure how all of this changes in CS6 though anecdotally, as Les points out, the OS X version does seem to have more bug reports. By the way, this would also be a good place to point out that Windows 8 is on average slightly faster than Windows 7.

Of course, beyond this you also have to consider the flexibility of buying (or building) a computer catering to your specific needs.

Finally, no reason to turn this into another senseless "Mac vs PC" brawl. We've already established rational discussion on the matter is impossible several times over. Ultimately it comes down to personal preference.

Last year I made the decision to build a custom PC for $5k ($15 retail) with a Quadro 4000 now running cs6. Thank god I did, makes me realise how much dribble comes out of Apple's mouth. For the first time since 96 I've realised all the marketing hype with Apple is just that.
Windows has so much more to offer me, wish I'd made the decision sooner, but I do miss Pro Res exports.

Oh and I also swapped to a Galaxy 3 phone 2 weeks ago, it blows the iPhone out of the ball park, again marketing hype, the phone5 is ancient and embarrassing, Mac better redesign their iP6 or their going to go drown in Samsung Sea. I've tried telling my mac friends to try Galaxy 3 for a few weeks and see how futuristic and advanced it is, same crap comes out of their Apple mouths, "nothing beats apple".... ahh so naive.

Sorry, rambled a bit of topic. PC is better for me. No problems providing you never look up adult sites or torrents.
