  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4k / 2k PRO RES / DNxHD MODULE - who wants one.

Ha ha you deserve to use the sad face, but you have your camera and all your bits already.. For a lot of people us getting all manufacturing hands on deck to get out go backorder gives them big smiley faces :)

Lots of cool stuff coming guys.. we just aren't talking about it a year before it's ready anymore. The competition started actually listening to us :)

Understood.

Im just happy that your making one...
cheers

It's great to hear about the Prores "feed". I'm in the same boat as most of you. We all love RAW, that's why we bought our Epics and RED-Ones.
We love that stuff, but a lot of productions cry for fast turnarounds and demand a simpler workflow. I can see Jim rolling his eyes and mine are too but that's the way
business is today. In 1-2 years RAW editing will be as normal as Prores today, but not right now. Too many clients don't know how to deal with RAW and don't want to.

All you guys are talking about a module. But I heard Jarred saying "feed", he he he. Now that's when I got goosebumps. I don't want another bloody module that makes my Epic bigger and heavier again.
I want a button in the user interface that says: "Prores or RED RAW" and you choose what you want to record. That simple. The Epic has so much power it should be possible to do the Proresrecording inhouse.
You could even ad more codecs over time.

Now do that and you are the kings of kings. The Epic would become the most userfriendly camera ever built till today over night and Arri, Sony and Canon will go " what the f..ck was that", swoosh cya...

No offense but the word module makes us shiver around here. Module = more weight = killing the Epic superslick formfactor = makes my Epic look like an Alexa :scared:

Ah and yeah, REDmote Pro. I know Jarred, I won't go on.
Have a nice week-end everybody. It's Superbowl time!!!

Best

I mostly work on TV Commercials for Broadcast and sometimes internet. In that arena the Alexa shooting to Pro-Res is dominant, and the requests for more than 1080 are infrequent. Much is superior about the Epic, but the post path and the angst that it causes the agency and they then cause me is vast.

On the Epic we've already got a supercomputer and an incredibly fast way of recording - would it be possible to record baked log pro-res or dnxhd with a firmware upgrade or an alternate firmware boot ?

RGB baked 1080 1-60fps was part of the orig. spec of the Epic back when it was announced, lacking any knowledge of how to do it would it still be possible to implement ? It would be a checkmate move on Arri and nip Canon in the bud.

Thanks,
Matt Uhry

Tim, let you know that both Epic and Alexa still have a color shift issue, just have a look at the recent movies that were shot with those systems to find out more about it.

Wie still have to see how F65 handle all this.

Tim, great idea, never thought about that as a possibility... That would be even more than insane and i would easily accept lower framerates to free up processing power to generate prores! Wow, if the camera could do that without a module, that would be f*cking unbelieveable!!!

Yo Sanjin

I don't know what you are talking about. My Epic is killer from head to toe. I get super great colors out of it every day. I do a lot of grading anyway and the shit is RAW so what's the problem.
Varial NDs can give you a much worse colorshift but you can kill it with just one click in post.

To what films are you referring to? Did Fincher give you a hint?

Sorry, but I can't see that.

You guys are reaching..

I know 995 for the thunderbolt rocket is totally reaching.

Its probably more like 1995. :)

For the record. If I had the choice between a camera module that does two codecs or a computer module that does all codecs and all resolutions and realtime playback. The choice would be simple. I'd backup the data and hand the client 1080, 2k or 4k in any flavor they want.

Kerp the camera light. Keep the post "heavy".

Reiterating.

A competitively priced post module goes years into the future not months

Every time I ask Red Rep about this kind of module, they say Red is not going to develop a product that is already on the market (AJA, PIX, ATOMOS...)

But I´m with Toia and everybody, we need this, personally I need it to shut up more than a producer who wants to work with Alexa.

Will see.

I would love an elegant module that gave me everything. Wireless, small dalies, editorial files... But I am 100% with David. A new RED Rocket 2, or as he calls it, a REDPOST (1), would be the best move forward. If you need ProRes or DNx use a 3rd party solution, and let RED focus on more revolutionary products.

Yep

Toia got playback.

For me, the "one more thing" from RED it would be REDPOST. It wipes out not just Alexa arguments, but every other camera as well, now and into the future.

The only things I want at the camera end are in software.

Continuosly Improved REDCODE
a real time lapse mode with ramping
power management

Rather than a prores module I'd much rather see red develo a small external box that allows evf and LCD on the brain, like a one in, two out box that would allow three monitoring paths. If it looked like ETs breakout box That would be cool.

In my opinion, I think this approach is the very thing that people keep saying gives Alexa an advantage.

There are obviously two schools of thought here: ultimate quality with a heavy post backend, or compromises in post flexibility with a lighter workflow. I think both approaches are very valid in different situations. The thing is, we already have ultimate quality with a heavy post backend. We don't have a way to get to 1080 without transcoding, we don't have a way to get to Prores without transcoding, and we certainly don't have any kind of wireless transmission from the camera. These things a module could grant us and remove some of the criticism people from other camps have about Epic.

Personally, I know I would continue to use my camera as I currently do in most situations, but would also kill for some of the functionality that this kind of a module provides. Not everything I shoot MUST be in 4K. I don't even need to future proof everything I shoot. I do need fast turnarounds in many situations, I do need a way to get my RED video wirelessly off a Steadicam in other situations, and I would love the return of a very lightweight "proxy" solution that lets me get to cutting as soon as I get off set and not days after it's been through REDCINE-X.

I'm with you that a cheaper, faster RED ROCKET option (that is not restricted to being a PCI card) is definitely necessary. I won't fight you on that at all. But I don't think it has to be an either/or situation with the module. Some of the things that people are championing for in this thread are very important, and they are things that were presented to us almost two years ago as forward thinking expandability for their camera system. Over that much time things will inevitably evolve and change, but I certainly hope we see something in this direction before too long.

Very good post Haakon.

Salient and intelligent point of view. I don't think it has to be either or, but if Toia can ask for a camera module (which I agree can be a bit more compact than solutions that exist) then I really think its also a good time to bring up a widely accessible post solution idea that further strengthens the entire red workflow.

David

A ProRes option is SO SO NEEDED! I have also been saying this, great job Mark for making this a great dialogue!

A Pro Res option will help me and everyone else compete against Alexa.... 2nd party recording options are a work around / a half-ass option and our clients can smell that.

With a Red in-camera ProRes option and the upcoming RedColor3 and I am very excited for the future!

Prost,
Rich

I would like a two streams to the ssd solution possible when shoting with higher compressions. We kind off allready have that with hdrx so adding some process compression to one of the streams might not be completely impossible.

There are a ton of positive answers already, and I want to add my voice to that chorus.

+2

Because two is the largest number of these I think I could realistically justify owning.

I would love a 4K/2K/1080p capable recorder.

I'd very much like to see ProRes, DNxHD and h.264. I want 444 as an option.

I'd very much like it if this thing had all the same metadata as in the associated .r3d files.

Why is it better than a Pix 240 (which I love)?

Metadata and file naming matches. So, even at 1080p, if you want to conform to the .r3d later its straightforward.

Of course, 2k and 4K would be a huge advantage - the Pix240 only handles 1080 and 720 inputs and outputs. Strictly Rec709.

The big advantage of the Pix 240 versus what we are proposing ... the Pix 240 is a much cheaper bit of hardware. It uses the SDI output and just displays and encodes.

This thing would have to transcode from RAW data to the formats we are asking for in real time. It is basically a Rocket and some general purpose encoding hardware, plus something to control. (like a GPU!) Prices would be in order with a Rocket Card and a recent GPU AND a multicore mobile CPU all made into a tiny case. Its like a $10000 part.

Its been covered, but the intended use would be editing proxies and for many jobs a the "proxies" would be the deliverable ... with reference back to the R3D only occasionally.

On another note ... the most important improvement to the Epic/Scarlet is the ability to drive an EVF and LCD simultaneously. I'd really like a very basic module that allowed a couple of real XLR inputs (TA3 like the Red One would be acceptable ... but not ideal) and an extra Red output.
