  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4k / 2k PRO RES / DNxHD MODULE - who wants one.

I honestly don't understand most people on here.
We are not asking that the camera shoot prores like the Alexa. That would be completely stupid.
We are asking for a tiny module that attaches to the camera to record Prores simultaneously with the raw codec.
We are not little ignorant kids here. We all know R3d is 10 times better than Prores. Simple as that
We just want more choices of recording format.
We are very intelligent individuals who know that with a scaled down 15 stop 6k sensor all our dreams will come true.
Quit trying to explain how awesome your current R3D work-flows are. We understand that.
Nobody here is arguing for us. We are fighting to save our clients who really want to work with Red in an easier format.

I'm nearly buying a c300 just for this issue. I have to shoot and edit something this weekend, and with my epic data transfers, rendertimes are going to take too long. Inage quality is not the biggest concern, turn around time is. Now i'm probably renting a c300, leaving my epic at home... Please red, also give us the option too use it with a prores module...

Buy a $200 LaCie Thunderbolt to Esata and your time will be speed up by a lot for the transferring ... Rendering that's another story but I would rent a PIX 240 instead and save the money for a RED Proxy but that's just me.

Late at the party ? Hey, come on....

First things first: This image is a photoshop mockup...
VOTE 1 for 4k / 2k Pro res (Log C or REDLOG or REDCOLOR3) MODULE + RAW R3D's.

I like the streaming idea too, but seriously, nobody needs to edit WHILE recording.
So, give me that lovely LogC option in either codec, just PLEEZE not with those bloody CF cards. CF is over. Canon using them just doesn't make them any better.

This is the ONLY module I'm waiting around for. Don't want to buy a PIX or Atmos or whatever - this would be puuurrrrfect. +AT LEAST 1

I wish there would be just a little indication of hope or disappointment from Red to let as know if they are considering it or its a no go so we can just move on.
They've wanted us to let them know what we want, this what we want. At least now they can clearly tell us its not coming. We will quietly just move on...

hope... one of the rules about some of the 3rd party technology in it is that we are not allowed to talk about it until its been blessed after completion.

Hehe :) Good news!

Sounds like a 3rd party module is coming to market soon :) Now, who is making it?

Oooh, even better :) We shall see.

Best in class images; RED + best in class sound; SD = nirvana!

Quite frankly a PIX 240 with a modified casing and interface for the modular DSMC form factor would make my day.

No offense to RED but the audio quality of the Sound Devices gear is a step above anything I've ever been able to record on camera. The idea of having hero sync audio and hardware encoded ProRes in hand for immediate editorial is very attractive.

Hopefully RED and Sound Devices are already well on their way to delivering such a thing and Jarred is just honoring whatever NDAs would be typical of that kind of collaboration.

Cheers - #19

I love you Jarred! Seriously dude, I love you. You should be called the "fire listener chief". I am speechless...
This is even bigger news than the attached Red magged HP computer.

But please make sure they remember the specs...
1.Must be 12bit log 4444 4k, 2k, 1080, not 10bit 422
2. must have R3D file naming structure in case we need to fall back to the recorded raw.
3. must not use cf cards (they suck)
4. Must only be released after or alongside the Dragon Sensor so it can be over-sampled from 6k down to 4k with all the 15 stop lushness.
5. many will argue that it should have rec 709/redgamma 3 this could be an option, but lets not loose sight of the fact that The epic is a high end digital cinema camera.

great news!! I think it should have choices, 10bit 422 on CF cards for example would be ideal for me :)

It would be even more perfect if there was know module at all.. And we got R3ds and pro res on the same card at the same time.
I'm dreaming now. :).
Or. We could choose 4k prores 4444 log or R3D...
Oooooor. This isn't a silly idea... Red start making small Prores 4k log C or red log film 4444 cameras only.
That shoot all the same frame rates as they do now... That would most certainly be a clear winner for sales.
I just dont want my camera to grow in size.

Yes. Same Card!!! Keep the epic small, give me another codec option not another module. Give me the option of loading a Pro Res or DnxHD build or create an R3DLT platform agnostic codec for NLEs that dumps the metadata and burns in the look or not. The Data rate and file size of R3D and ProRes4444 are pretty close, I wonder if this is possible?
or
when Dragon comes out would it be possible to shoot 4k R3D raw and 2k Prores or R3DLT lil brother simultaneously. Would this add up to the same through put needed for 1 6k file....?

Regardless of what you guys do next, I really love this camera. just shot a Promo for Project runway all at 90FPS and 240fps. If I had shot this on film the film and processing costs would of been more than the entire budget of the promo.

I love the future.

I posted this in the 'Subtlety' thread but it belongs here...

I'll be interested to see what AJA come up with, for instance. I recently had a conversation at REDucation with Ted S. and an AJA guy... looking at a Ki Pro Mini... I remarked they should build basically the same thing but as a rear module, with various recording options... the response from the AJA guy was of the 'ummm watch this space...' variety ;-)
