  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Transcoded 4k RED footage to 1920 x 1080 through Red Cine X awhile ago.

I can't believe I didn't realize this untill now but my clips do not take up the entire 1920 x 1080 frame, resulting in black lines at the top and bottom.

The lines are in the original R3D's as well...hmmm, now I'm stumped. The transcodes were for the offline.

The aspect ratio of the 4k footage is 1.9:1

Was I supposed to crop out the black the lines in red cine X before I trans code?

How does this affect the online? Will I need to scale up all the clips to get rid of the black bars in the online?

Thank you

Hi Joe. The problem here is you have 4K 1.9:1 aspect ratio material going to a 1.78:1 (16x9) aspect ratio 1080p file. That's why you have black bars.

Two solutions.

- If you want 16x9 full screen 1080p material you can use the framing options in Redcine-X Pro to "trim off" a bit off the sides.
- If you want the 1.9:1 aspect ratio and don't want black bars on the file, encode at 1920x1013.

In the future you can record at 4K HD and that will be a native 16x9 aspect ratio if that's what you are going for.

Hi Phil,

Thank you.

I do not want to re transcode, but I do want 16x9 full 1080p
at least for the final output so what are my options? Crop in the online?

Pardon my ignorance but why would anyone want to retain the 1.9:1 aspect ratio, I get 2:40:1 but 1.9:1?

Well, you can scale up the file, but I personally would recommend transcoding to the format you desire to have the highest quality material.

1.9:1 is the native maximum sensor size and many shooters choose to finish in that, extract 2:1, 2.40:1, 1.85:1, or 16x9 from that extra sensor real estate. Just depends on your workflow.

Red allows you to shoot in "aspect ratio native" formats such as 4K HD (16x9) or 4K WS (2.37:1), so on the next shoot and if you know you're delivering in one of those formats you may choose to shoot with them.

Basically the Red camera system is a multi format system and allows the shooter to choose which format and how exactly to use the resolution found within the camera itself.

Otherwise add or create 16x9 and 2.4:1 frame guides in camera or presets in RedcineX so you can quickly set matching crop guides before transcoding.

For a 2.40 feature, I generally shoot 2:1 because I have to make both the 2.40 theatrical version, the 2.40 letterboxed home video version, and a 16x9 (1.78) full-frame version for home video. So extracting 2.40 by cropping a little off the top & bottom of 2:1, and extracting 16x9 by cropping a little off the sides of 2:1, seems to be the best compromise.

But if I were shooting for a 16x9 TV series, I'd just record a 16x9 format.

I love the 2:1 and more so on Dragon, yet for still pulling, I have tended to always shoot full 5k sensor, and shot full 6k Dragon for our short, but I do think that with Dragon I don't really need to shoot the full sensor and can very well go to 2:1 all the time, and have the best of all words, were also 2.40:1 will be the final delivery, were I actually will try to control that NO 16x9 is showed or extracted by it, leaving the Top and Bottom Black Bars in all Deliverables in respect to the intended ratio... If I can... ;)

Having already shot all your material in 1.9:1, you'll have to crop 16x9 out of the R3D files and re-transcode or push in 120% for a digital blowup and render with the crop-in. Or get to picture-lock and only re-transcode the files used in the edit.

I think you have to shoot 5K HD or 4K HD or 3K HD or 2K HD or 1K HD to get the 16:9 aspect ratio. (just guessing don't have the menu in front of me right now. I only shoot 4K HD for the time being. as a general rule)

The problem is he already shot everything at 1.9:1 and now wants to edit 16x9 without a letterbox.

Hey thanks for all the replies, let me mention that this is the OFFLINE edit and it is nearly completed.

I don't care about editing in that format, so I fail to see why we should re-transcode things for the offline edit,
if I'm going to go back to the R3D's for the grade; Maybe I'm mistaken but can't I extract a full 16X9 from the
grade?

You are mistaken. Using the framing tools in Redcine-X Pro extra your 16x9 image. Boom done. Meaning you have 4096x2160 material but want to crop to 3840x2160 and scale down to 1920x1080 for your particular job.

If you're using the R3Ds for the online you can just crop and zoom your footage to 16:9 in the grading suite.
