  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4 New OLPF's for Dragon!

I believe these are by John Marchant according to Jarred. Fully approved by red.

Hehe, I come on here to post something and you're all ahead of me ;)

We have four OLPFs designed currently - one is shipping right now, three more are on the way on a sensible timescale.
All of these are approved by RED, use genuine RED parts and present no warranty issues.

They are described in reasonable detail on our store at http://www.kippertie.com

The Full Spectrum and IR versions have some example images and I'll be populating the store with more as I get a chance. Both of these are false colour filters, so they're mostly for the mad scientists and experimenters... but we've tried to keep the price low enough that you can have fun with them without breaking the bank.

Coming shortly we have our take on a Low-con option in LLO and STH variations. These are under testing and revision right now, but we wanted to let everyone that they're much more than a concept at this point, as a low-con OLPF is a much sought after piece of the Dragon puzzle.

I'll share images when appropriate in the near future and I know Phil is keen to do one of his great side-by-sides for me.

We have more stuff in the works too, which we are also really excited about... not just filtration but 'more' for that space behind the lens ;)

Thanks for the detail. The low con filter - will this also have some halation of highlights as well? Or will it strictly be just lowered contrast on the overall image?

Very keen! I'm super excited you're making these. I want to do some BW IR work real bad, but I'm very interested in seeing that low contrast option. I think a few folks will really like that.

Sidney, that's effectively what our currently shipping option gives you :)

and re: the low-con, we're targeting a mixture of halation and contrast softening. We're working with the right people on this, but it's new ground so it's taking us some iterations.

John,

So just to be clear as to the description provided on your page regarding the Low-Con options. Are they too "clear", as in there is no IR cut provided on those OLPF's as well?

Thanks,

Abe Espinoza

This is fantastic John.

So so happy to see this!

And the Dragon possibilities just opened up again!

No the low-con options are designed to match the existing filters for IR, colour etc. behaviour as far as is feasible. Only the IR and Full Spectrum versions are unusual in that sense.

John, will you offer zero low pass options for LLO and STH?

I looked at this and its feasible, in fact I have one for the LLO on my desk... but they'll come later if there's specific demand. I'm trying to pick the low hanging fruit first - ie. the stuff I've been developing and using for some time, and then the big demand (as I see it) which is for a halation/low-con (basically film/alexa) look.

Welcome OLPF low con..... less filter stacks in the MB .....no need to swap different densities on wides or long lensing.

Next up: low con halation anamorpic low light perfect skintone olpf ;-)

Have to provide my standard RED disclaimer here since tech support is already getting calls and emails asking if we have a new firmware for camera and new REDCINE-X PRO version to account for John's OLPFs :001_unsure:

Yes, we have provided empty OLPF trays for John to experiment with and sell his own flavors of OLPF. Knowing how smart he and his team is, we figured he could do some interesting things.

That being said, the trays we provided are RED parts and they, in themselves, are within factory spec and do not affect warranty status. However, that is where the line ends. We are not providing John with any materials (or even guidance) on the actual OLPF materials / recipes. These are not supported within RED firmware or software or by RED tech support. This is a non-OEM solution. If anything done with these solutions damage your camera in any way, it would not be covered.

Hopefully, that helps with some clarity.
