  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4.5k Wide screen for Scarlet?

I think RED have moved most of their firmware R&D efforts on to greener pastures (read: dragon) and 4.5k/24fps won't be coming to Scarlet-X... Nor a traditional burst mode, nor 4k pseudo-HDRx at 24fps...

But is it that difficult for them to give a firmware update that would provide 4.5K Widescreen to Scarlet? It's not like they're going to stop giving firmware updates to Scarlet all together (at least not anytime soon i would hope.)

I keep wondering why it is that people assume the Scarlet hardware can handle this.

Is this fact- that the hardware cannot handle it?

Well... It's pretty much a given that if you want certain features not available in a Scarlet; RED wants you to buy an Epic.

This kind of pricing & product hierarchy has been around for quite a while... In 1979 Chevrolet gave you the choice between two 'Vette's

The faster more expensive one with lots of options and sex appeal (for 1979 that is)

Or the cheaper entry model

There are probably dozens of products in your home that have features packed inside that the manufacturer has 'disabled' through firmware or just removing a button form the interface - just because you didn't buy the more expensive model. Fact of life.

The fact is that RED hasn't given this option. Unlike some, I don't buy the argument that they intentionally leave out capabilities in order to upsell you. That has never been RED's style and they really don't need to do that; there are plenty of real differences between Scarlet and Epic. My comment was that people tend to assume that the hardware CAN do this when there is no evidence to suggest it is so.

This observation would make since if the Red One (less expensive camera) didn't exist. Maybe I should go for the lesser expenseive model to ge my 4.5k.

Yeah - and shoot yourself in the foot - because the RED One is effectively EOL'd with no further upgrades, and a dwindling supply of accessories.

Why do you need 4.5K so much? Do you already own a Scarlet? if not, why not just rent an Epic for your project? I sort of understand the human need for more and better, but shooting 4.5K over 4K isn't going to make your project more compelling or viewable, is it?

After testing one for a few months borrowed from a friend, I'm considering buying one because I like the camera; but yes 4.5k does make a huge difference to me since I've shot tons on the Red One using that mode. I see the difference.

But the question in the original post was 'why hasn't Red implemented it in the firmware?' If what you say is true (that it's marketing) than I will live with it. Others are sayng the hardware can't handle it, fine I can live with that too, but so far I have found nothing substantiated by Red on this issue. Which is it?

I get it - yeah we can see the difference - viewing public, not so much. None of my commissioning editors see the difference. Nor do the OTT operators. I have an OTT channel that goes live in January on 12 telecom providers (AT&T u-verse, Bell Fibe, Telus Optik, Telephonica, etc, etc, etc) None of them even have 4K on their 2-3 year roadmap, let alone the 6K that we'll start shooting with the Dragon soon. All of the content will get dumped to 1080 at best, and 720 in many cases. I supply content to AOL & Scripps networks where I saw over 100million impressions last year - and all of those were 480p. So wincing over ½K is...

In the end it doesn't matter - nobody outside the RED 'C' suite knows the answer, and they aren't telling. Right from the start Red has repeatedly said it wasn't possible / wasn't going to happen... so why loose sleep?

Put your energy into shooting

Yeah but I'm not talking about 480p or you tube. I'm talking about capturing in the highest resolution as possible that I can afford and scaling down to a 2k DCP. It may not matter to you, that's cool, your deal, but it matters for what I want to do because I have a working budget that I'm trying to get the most out of...but I appreciate your opinion....

Where did YouTube enter the conversation? And why are people so quick to dismiss the interwebs? Maybe if you embraced it you wouldn't have budget constraints...

I associate 480p with youtube (sorry about that) and the interweb which I do not dismiss. Heck, I will shoot on the DVX 100 if that is what the project calls for- love that camera.

...but back to the original topic. I know 5k has been discussed and I don't expect to ever see that in Scarlet, but as I said I have never seen Red say that 4.5k ws in Scarlet will not happen. If you have any links I would be happy to check it out and forever hold my peace.

The best evidence that 4.5K will not happen is the fact that it hasn't. And people have been requesting it for quite awhile. I think I read somewhere that it is the horizontal resolution that determines the limits of the processing and even if the total data stream is the same as a taller/narrower 4K output, they aren't the same to the camera. I don't for a minute believe the conspiracy of intentional throttling of capabilities.

Most of my knowledge comes from hanging out here, and personal conversations with RED at NAB or when I've gone down to Cali to pick up new gear. Topping this all off is the fact that Scarlet X is essentially 'dead' (though they still have them in the store) because all software dev will be focussed on Dragon now - it is the future and the way forward.

You can keep asking, but it's been asked here ad-nausium since the night Scarlet was announced and went on sale. It hasn't happened yet, with no indication it ever will.
