can we please get a 4/3 mode? also any chance red will ever use standard industry names for their aspect ratios instead of this "hd" nomenclature? might simplify things i'd imagine for some shooters who aren't as familiar with red cameras when your talking about things they are familiar with versus FF, HD, WS stuff like that...

Most of this infer is easily found in Phil's sticky. If you have an iPhone and you press and hold the image, you can save it to you photo library and look at it just about anywhere.

Also, you can actually (by using a preset, eliminate all of the formats and sizes you do not use (or want to use)

IE, I just map the 6K FF, 5K FF, 4K FF, 3K FF and 2KFF and use 16x9 frame guides.

I keep a 3x2 for stills mode now too.

I think this might help, but might also need to be updated.
FWIW HD always means a 16x9 aspect ration and the frame size is tuned to make renders and workflows generally faster as the mathematical scaling is already done.

Cheers,
Battistella

Yes I know that Phil is very helpful and I can build frame guides for other aspect ratios..But if we could just record native 4/3 for anamorphic I think that would be more ideal.. I work as a tech with lots of DPs and ACs, so I am just advocating some of their complaints...

That's cool Brian. Very much appreciated.

Do you you have any thoughts on how the naming could go?

maybe instead of FF which means using the full recording area of the sensor, should they just call it

6k 1.91x1
6K 2:1
6k 1.78:1
and so on?

I'm not as familiar with the anamorphic modes, but I am pretty sure some of those guys could chime in with some ideas.

But if we could just record native 4/3 for anamorphic

That's exactly what the various anamorphic modes do. The chip's native aspect ratio is 2:1 so there is no native 1.33:1. Anamorphic on epic works very well indeed.

There is a 4:3 mode...in 4K. There is no 4:3 mode in 5K or 6K because there aren't enough vertical pixels to complete that square(*). If you want 4:3, shoot in 4K 4:3, and widen it out to get all the beauty you can from 2880 vertical pixels.

(*) 4.5K 4:3 requires 3456 vertical pixels; DRAGON has 3160 vertical pixels total

Did Red ever create an ANA mode that uses the max vertical pixel resolution possible on the Dragon sensor?

Yes sir they did. 6K 6:5 is what you want for a standard 2.40:1 2X anamorphic.

Here's everything you need to know about anamorphic and Dragon:

Also, with HD formats being standard across the ITU specification it being "industry standard" I see zero issue with Red's format naming convention.

To add. This is all in the advanced format tab controls and not rocket science. 6:5 or 4:3 is in there and it provides the given resolution.

On anamorphic jobs you can limit the format quick menu to the specific formats and resolutions desired for the project even.

just a reminder - 4:3 will give you a 1:2.66 aspect ratio with a 2x ana. lens - which will need to be cropped to 1:2.40 in post (just like on the Alexa XT).

6:5 (which is not the most user friendly name) - will give you a "correct" 1:2.40 aspect ratio with 2x anamorphic lenses.
