  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

You can do all of this with a 4/3 sensor coupled with a s35lens, just with a cropping factor. The 4/3 size will give you the exactly same high quality image quality as a windowed 5k. A 4/3 sensor, would do 99.999% of everything you need, and could be a financially viable option for RED. The 3k IS NOT!

If A director calls for a 80mm lens wide open from experience he will expect to see that lens do what he knows that lens will do and that will only happen if that lens is mounted to an S35 sensor.

Red I think really needs to get it's act together. Canon already has an HD cam that accepts its lenses and shoots HD - body only $2600 at B&H in December. And it's a 21 M pixel still cam as well. Produce a camera similar to canon's 5d mark II but with 2-3K RAW and you'd have a winner. Similar low light sensitivity would be a plus too. Oh yeah, let's get one out now and quit making promises - only one functional red camera out and a bazillion speculations on their soon to be released Scarlets. Where's the adobe r3d codec? It was supposed to be out, what September? Now it's only for cs4? I've yet to have Red Cine not crash on any downloaded r3d footage. I did all the mentioned ooga booga stuff to make it work, but to no avail. Maybe I should get a medicine man to lift the curse from my computer. All this crap about redisigning sensors is silly. Let's see a camera, let's watch it work (not inside some plexiglass container), let's see some footage, and let's watch some workflow. Otherwise I and many others have a shlock of canon lenses waiting to be mounted elsewhere.

Look if someone is so brain-dead that they can't figure out how to accommodate this director with a different lens.....

Hey,

I just wanted to reply on the Canon EOS 5D Mark II and I have checked out a few things about it. This thing is just still an advanced DSLR, the image is not Raw but compressed to H.264 , and jee what a compression, recordtime
max 29 min and maximum file capacity 4G ?

With my HVX200 on DVCPRO need allready 1Gig a min! at 1080p, so I would rather call it a good DSLR with a newbie extra playtoy, but nothing for the serious filmmaker.

However I do agree that RED should take note of this. And come up with a solid solution for their indie filmakers witch is far ahead on the competition and will set them safe for the next 3 or 4 years at affordable prices.
We live in a time were everything changes fast.

About the research time I can understand the RED policy, RED is not a mass production company but rather an elite camera builder, so we have to stay calm and hope.

Is there anything that would keep you guys from making a 3k version of the S35 scarlet?

Also are there other people out there that can see the need for something like this?

Some advantages:
  1. All 35mm Nicon/Cannon/PL lenses could be used
  2. There would be no need to get a whole new set of lenses when upgrading or adding a second brain. Existing glass could be leveraged.
  3. This would be a low end option for DSLR users wanting to get into video. They aren't going to want to spend $7k just to use their existing glass and aren't going to want to go to 2/3"
  4. This would be a sweet spot for people considering large format competitors that don't want to reduce the format size. A higher res option without going with a smaller sensor

Unless I am mistaken a lot of people don't care about 5k. 3k is sufficient for most, but they don't want to use the 2/3" for various reasons be it existing glass, upgrade problems, or other issues. People won't want to spend $4k extra just for resolution they don't want yet they want to use their existing glass.

So summing it all up.

3k@120fps S35 for under $3.5k

Please!!!!

Nice threadstarter... give them a finger, and they´ll ask for your arm.

What you are asking for swena, is a red1 for 3500$ except the fact that a red1 can´t do 120 fps a 3k.
forgetaboutit :bleh:

Now about that 4/3s mount scarlet with 1080p, redcode raw and specially designet red-primes... that would soooo sweet

Well I admit that I don't know to much about camera design. I suggested a rough estimate of specs and other posters have refined the idea started. Currently I realize that 3k S35 is probably to much although I say probably because I find the Dec 3rd announcement to be interesting. I can't see how he could make the 13th announcement "insignificant".

If you would have read my post's later you would have found that I now support the 4/3" concept. (unless Jim has found a way to do the impossible again)

Actually, I've checked it out as well. The video's HD bitrate is 35MB/s and will only record 12 mins of video per 4GB at hi-rez. The thing will continue to record after 4G, but the per file size max is 4G. You can also capture to a computer or hard drive. There are some drawbacks - no slow mo, and some auto features are disabled during record. But all in all, a neat piece of work. It will also take a 21 M picture at the same time with about a 1 sec. pause in the video to write the pic to a separate file. All this time and still no camera. Lot's of promises. Where's the beef? This is silly, all this drooling over a camera that doesn't exist yet. April's a long way off just to get an order in.

Ummmm DOF...

Are you suggesting that any film plane or sensor size you to bring a set should (as long as you are "smart enough" to know the equivalent focal length) be ok with a director that is expecting an 80mm lens to do what an 80mm lens would do combined with an S35 image plane... your arguing your point from with in your own little bubble. If you aren't a Pro D.P. then I would suggest limiting your agreement to whats relevant inside your bubble. Just as I'm speaking from mine.

Can you argue that If Spike Jones, Dewey Nicks, Sofia Coppola, Paul T. Anderson etc we making a feature Commercial that they would be ok with Any image capture system that was smaller than S35... what about directors that own there own lens sets. what do you say to them when you as a D.P. with your 4/3 Red... "Um sorry but these aren't going to work"

Yes Directors own there own lens sets and yes I Have shot for them

I need to reiterate yet again that we are not advocating for full blown compliance with the fourthirds system We want a fourthirds SIZED sensor and a sensor module which could adapt to either full frame OR Four thirds glass.

If this were implemented, of course your directors glass would work if your camera had the appropriate mount. Just a bit differently. An easy 2:1 crop factor. And the beauty of digital cinema is that they can see directly how they would work. Just tell them it's close to shooting 2perf 35.

Example 100mm lens on 35mm @ f2.8 = 50mm @f1.4 on 4/3s. Is this not doable? Am I missing something? I never claimed this was IDEAL. I am seeing the 4/3 as the ideal for indies who wouldn't mind making simple 2:1 calculations to make great pics.

I like this idea very much.

And this would be yet another way to appease those REDOne users who are worried.

I'm not sure about the price you've given [3,5k $], but a S35mm 3K camera would seriously kick ass.

- good low light.
- even low[er] noise.
- possible kickass dynamic range.
- whatnot.

Bundle that with Monstro technology and an 16 bit AD converter and you got a dream. This cam can produce some evil DR.

---

Master Jim, now that you have decided to make a S35mm camera under 10k $, why not make it even better.

Seriously - any resolution above 3K [2K resolved] can kiss my ass.

Excuse my French.

So, let's take a look at our new daydream:

- S35mm sensor. Monstro tech.
- 3K RedCode Raw 42.
- 120 fps.
- PL, Nikon and Canon lens mount option.
- 5000-8000 $ for the brain.

This is like Peter Majtan's RED Maroon idea.

And for the still market, I'm sure a lot of people will be taking that over a higher resolution, because of the dynamic range.

Just my to stotinkas :).

YES!!!! I would suggest that everyone interested in this paste the following as your singniture.

- Scarlet brain/body
- S35mm sensor. Monstro tech
- 3K RedCode Raw 42
- 120 fps
- PL, Nikon, Canon

The problem with Monstro S35 at 3k is the pixel size probably would not add up to 3k with the s35 sized sensor. It might be a bit less than 4K though. Cost probably would be prohibitive - hence the 4/3 idea.

Let's just wait and see what Jim has up his sleeve for the 3rd. I have a feeling that it might have something to do with this thread..... although I don't see how this alone could make it more important than the 13th. :waaa:

If you want 120FPS @ 3k that is a issue of brains and processing on the 5K sensor. I personally prefer a full S35 sensor but unless the "breakthrough"s Jim is talking about have to do with this than I don't think we will be seeing it soon.

hoping...............

Yeeah,

Thats the stuff were talking about. A real kickass Scarlet camera.
Big sensor Monstro windowed 3K or not, or at least then not windowed the 4/3. and indeed 120 fp at 5000$, Thats real future. A'm counting the days of till 3 December.

Brainburst, maybe you will concider moving your thoughts to a new thread called "4/3 good enough for indies" that way us silly S351203k'ers can continue talking about a camera that would replace 35mm film cameras, one that most working pro's would be able to afford so we can go onto any job with our "unnecessary" (I quote the sentiments of our brother in RED brainburst) S35 120 fps. 3k and start making some of that package rental money for our selves.

i agree.. the only camera i would buy today. its the only one that has everything the red has plus more... why should we go back in time for a newer camera, plus i think the 2/3 camera is going to be really hard to handly. First its not full frame. so if you even get nikon or canon lens on the camera you will still be missing your wide angles. The 2/3 lens by fuji and canon are not cheap and the hd ones are... well there rare. So the full frame scarlet is the only hope for something that can handle the demands of indie filmmaker or anyone else who is looking at the red as a future camera, the 5d which cost lens then even the 2/3 will be able to do full frame hd footage and 30p. which is all anyone needs from a digital slr. The red One still seems like my first pick.

I love the idea of a 3k s35mm-sized sensor if and only if means we could see a notable improvement in dynamic range over what a 5k sensor the same size has to offer. Overcranking to 72fps or more would also be great. But DR is my biggest concern.

I know they're saying 11 stops for the new sensor, but R1 is claimed to have 10 stops at the moment, but everything I've seen seems to suggest it has maybe 8.5 stops at best.
