  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Since fab cost follows silicon wafer size, it is not likely that a 3k s35 sensor would be any cheaper to fab than the 5k version. $7k for the 5k S35 Scarlet is insanely cheap compared to anything else out there.

I would not dismiss the 2/3" format either. At 11+ stop DR, its noise performance should be comparable to RED 1 at least. Noise is the limiting factor on DR at the low end and is a product of the processing electronics. Current generation 45nm processor fabs reduce power consumption, heat, and therefore noise significantly compared with older technologies.

Premium quality 16mm or 2/3" glass is expensive, as it is for 35mm. But good glass is worth the investment. B4 2/3" glass will work just fine on an air gap CMOS sensor if the lens is collimated for it. Lenses that can resolve at least 120LPMM are needed to match the resolution of 2/3" Scarlet. Personally I would rather have the 2/3" version with expensive high quality cine glass over the S35 with cheap still camera glass at the same budget.

Any comments on the 4/3" sized sensor David?

4/3" should be significantly less than S35, but fab costs are not a linear relationship with size. Jim mentioned in a post that the S35 sensor cost more than the whole 2/3" camera.

They aren't linear. They increase exponentially with size. Obviously there are materials costs. Then there is the the defective units cost. A single defect on a wafer will have greater impact on a larger sensor, all other things being equal, since there are more fewer sensors per wafer.
Fewer units produced per all other inputs i.e energy, labor.

Are these canon mounts still lens mounts or what? If so, will the camera be able to communicate with the lens such as image stabilization or auto features? Or will it be completely manual?

As of right now, the Canon mount available for RED doesnt have AF, but you can switch to IS if you hit the middle button, then the top and bottom at the same time.
