  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

32 & 64GB 90MB/s CF cards, now were talkin'...

Rob Galbraith has published some write and transfer speeds for the new Lexar 16GB card:

http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/content_page.asp?cid=7-10044-10297

Considering that Lexar 600 is almost double the speed of the Lexar 300 I've been using for a long time now I have a hard time believing RED won't certify it. It's a friggin' LOT faster than cards we're using reliably now.

And it's pretty cheap. That's the kinda thing that might get me moving from RED Drive shooting. Looks like you could take advantage of all the frame rates and resolution settings with those cards.

The question is, does RED actually recognize a card you put in and allow/not allow it? Or can you put any card in and give it a whirl?

Im pretty sure red has to accept the card and release software before you can give it a whirl.

I am extremely interested in RED's feedback as well.

Thanks!

New Red user here... building 1st Red One package for purchase. I'm still trying to figure out the CF cards. Two questions right now... 1 - Why wouldn't Red want other providers for their cards... are their profit margins that high (or tight)? 2 - Are the other card providers no bueno due to software/firmware builds or is it simply throughput? Thanks for all your help!

One last question... is there a problem with skipping CF all together and only shooting on Red Drive?

Hi 70weeksdj,

First off, this is a real name forum. Shoot an e-mail to jason to correct this.

Reason third party CF cards are limited in speed on the R1 is that they do not sustain R1's frame rates. There have been cases of big budget productions dropping frame because of these non-RED CF cards.

RED puts all CF cards through rigorous test (and rejects quite a few of them, I am told) before sending them out.

I registered before knowing the 'real name' rule and have posted for it to be corrected. Apparently they're swamped with those updates.

So is it only the upper frame rates? With the savings on cards I'd be fine shooting to Red Drive for high frame rates. Also, do they publish a list of rejected and accepted cards? Interested in these new high throughput cards from SanDisk & Lexar... Do you know anyone shooting on these?

One more thing... what is the benefit of the solid state media over the drive? Is it primarily for "bumpy" setups that cause problems on the drive or are there other benefits to solid state?

thanks again... Justin Machacek

CF has three benefits that I can think of:
1. More reliable than magnetic drive (no dropped frames due to vibration, less issues with media decay over time). Obviously, the solid state Red drive is equally as reliable as CF.
2. Lighter weight (helpful for flying Steadicam, for example).
3. Smaller size (helpful for u/w enclosures, for example).

The RedRaid has three benefits I can think of:
1. Less expensive
2. Higher storage capacity
3. Theoretically capable of more rewrite cycles (in practice, the limit on CF might be high enough not to matter)

Tom will these cards work? I read some threads stating there may be software/firmware support necessary for cards even though throughput would sustain. Is that true? Has anyone shot with Lexar or new SanDisk Extremes? I would love to hear real life results.

Yes Seriously, why cant there be availability for higher capacity cards? Through RED or other Channels? ( or why cant we shoot to another type of larger capacity harddrive rather than to do the DIT Switch out of Red Drives all the time?

Any word from RED on these new 600x cards?

I'd love the option of using lower REDCode data rate so I can use any CF card, this is specially good for the 3K Scarlet.

Is the data rate all that matters when it comes to card performance?

I always wondered if data rate would increse with higher fps.

I mean, is the data rate locked, so shooting high fps means the camera has to compress more frames within the fixed amount of MB per second?

Lexar 600x 16GB

Lexar 600x 16GB

The cards were said to be available in November. I've called local distributor in Poland and they said that the first batch is expected at the begining of December.

Are those Lexar 600x cards on stock somewhere in US? Did anyone tried them with RED?

Did RED test them yet?

I haven't been able to get my mitts on the the new Lexar cards yet, they should be hitting distributors literally any day now if not already. Hopefully RED is actively testing them or will be soon.

I had high hopes for the new Sandisk cards, but Jarred says they drop frames. In my tests of the new Sandisk 60MB/s and 90MB/s cards, I found that they are fast, but performance is erratic, I can definitely see how they could drop frames. The Extreme Pro 90MB/s cards, especially the 64GB one, are incompatible with most everything I tried to use them with. So I sent back the Extreme Pro card I ordered. I have two of the 60MB/s 32GB cards for use with the 7D / 5DII / Nikon D3, etc.. They work great for this and it seems that's all they were designed for. pity.

Jeff thanks for the info on Sandisk's cards, hopefully Lexar will perform better - they seem to have promising benchmarks...

Yea, 2 things that would make this entire worflow so much better:

1 fast high capacity CF cards

2 build 21 support in Adobe products.

:)

I'm not asking for much.
