  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

32 & 64GB 90MB/s CF cards, now were talkin'...

I'm betting my money that they don't work on R1. Red is restricting CF for their own. Period. If so, we would of heard from them by now and address this on-going issue.

Business standpoint - more money for RED. Simple. I don't know why RedOwner are upset about this.

Just tried the sandisk extreme pro 32 gig card on my red, says it's not speed rated, high chance of dropout, only good for shooting in 2k mode and will only go up to 60 fps :0( Verrrryyyy saaad!

HAHA! doing a zero out test on this sandisk and it's averaging about 13mb/s BOOOOO!!

Yeah, these new "fast" SanDisk cards suck ass. We'll see what the new Lexar cards can do (or won't do).

Like I said above, I have some of the "60MB/s" SanDisk CF cards for sale.

I know everyone is pointing fingers and wondering why all these new cards on the market are not being allowed to work with the RED One.... The FLASH memory industry as a whole is full of shit with with their speed claims. I haven't tested the Lexar cards for my other purposes yet, I've been taking a wait and see approach, hoping to hear some preliminary reports from other sources before I waste my time. But I'll probably break down and buy a couple within the next couple weeks.

Thanks! Let me know what your results are, or if you hear anything favorable, I won't be taking the leap anymore until I hear some good news, it's too expensive a mistake to make, and no one seems to want these things back!! haha!

We have to say this pretty often - but it is a firmware function/limitation - the camera will say that no matter if the card is capable or not until RED allows particular cards to operate at higher resolution and speed - it will say that for anything but RED cards and I think the 8 gig lexar 300 UDMA since the RED 8G are the same.

Wow, as far as Red being involved in this thread, hmmmmmmmm

I think I heard a pin drop.

Here I am bitching about an alternative to Red Ram on another thread because of the price. By all means give me a CF card that I can shoot 23.98/HD/Redcode 36 on and I would be so frick'n happy.

So before I do, how many people sent messages to the "powers that be" and asked them direct regarding new CF cards?

:reddevil::sifone:

RED is just trying to cover their asses by only allowing their CF cards to work at full res in the RED One. I'm more pissed about how my 16GB RED Cards won't work at all in my 5D2. The 8GB RED Cards work just fine.

But anyways, I'm sure RED is getting ready to release some new cards here soon because of the price drop on the 16GB cards. Hopefully they will give use some choices between a 32GB and a 64GB card. But I think I'm going to wait and see what's going to be the media to capture 5K at 120fps on Epic.

"Re: 32 GB Cards
The pre-production units are due in soon... Media is something that we take pretty seriously so there are still a couple months of hardcore testing that needs to be done before they hit the streets. A bit to early to determine pricing yet :(

we have NDA's with most of the manufactures to get engineering samples early... . 16gb cards we had to get custom made because nobody would step up to the plate..

If there is one thing I can guarantee.. is that when our 32GB card comes out, its not going to cost you $1600. :) (referencing the cost of P2 card)

Don't worry.. some day the 16gb cards will be $199... someday :)

A:Yup just tested the Transcend.. still not there yet :( Tested really fast for the normal Block Size a CF card would normally see, but didn't do so well for the way the RED writes to them.

(SanDisk 64GB) .. dropped frames. Weird controller in the cards indeed that probably still needs some work. I was hoping the Photofast would be fast enough as well but they are half the speed as the Sandisk ones.

Hoping Lexar comes out with something new soon.... or we might need to make our own again when it comes time to increase size.

yeah... Im not sure who Sandisk made these 64gb cards for.. they dont seem to work in normal cameras.. our 16GB don't either, but that's because we had to custom make them to optimize them for our camera.

We're still working to qualify a 32GB card.

will CF work for 120fps 3k on scarlet? will SSD? its going to be interesting how the capacities and prices breakdown at launch... whenever that is.

Thanks Shawn, that is quite the list of quotes you have gathered, very much appreciated!!

Tom that is quite the amazing display about how many frames per second were you shooting at? I counted 90 frames in 30 seconds so thats 180 frames per minute and 3 frames per second at roughly 25-28mb per raw image thats 75-84mb per second, now why doesn't it work in the RED?

While that shows the cards are kinda fast for that sort of task, it's different than what is needed for RED. We would need to see some sustained transfer benchmarks via a SATA hosted CF module to really see what's going on. There's also a lot of buffering going on in the SLR and sustaining 3fps @ about 75fps with ~12 frames worth of buffering is a lot different than the card handling a constant stream of R3D data.

FWIW, I benchmarked the Lexar 16GB 600X cards a couple months ago in some of my own testing. They were a good 20%+ slower than the RED 16GB cards for sustained writes.

I've run across a few cards in my own testing that would probably be "good enough" for 4K 2:1 RC36 or 4K 16:9 RC28. But I think RED is also taking a conservative approach of making sure the cards are not just good enough, but can handle all formats on the RED One and potentially many formats on the DSMC cameras before they certify them. ...That's what I would do. There already going to have enough people complaining that the 8GB cards can't record some of the upcoming formats.

If you were to graph the write performance of these cards, I bet it looks like a heart monitor rather than a pretty straight line. That is bad, but that is what is wrong with most of the current "fast" CF cards.
