Just thought I'd share a shot with you
I found an old 70mm 300dpi film scan from my photography days stored on a cd... thats right, a CD!... I don't think I've even used my CD tray in my computer for at least 12 months!

Anyway... Here is a image of a 300dpi A3 scanned 70mm 100asa neg. Pretty much the same size as IMAX.... maybe a touch bigger to be honest. IMAX film is usually scanned at 72dpi.
Anyway.. Back to back with a shot from my OLD RED ONE camera.. (before I got it MX'd).. The 4k RED still was just taken from RED CINE X tonight.

Here's the back to back.

Hi Mark:

Thanks for uploading this. Can you enlarge the lip areas of both to 800% though instead? It looks like the focal point on the 70mm image was at the guys mustache so that his eye isn't quite in as good of focus as the girls. Whereas the area above the girls lips seem to be a bit out of focus. I would just like to see that area enlarged instead if you could.

Thanks,

IMAX film is usually scanned at 72dpi.

Sounds very strange to me 4k/6k/8k would be more usual. 72dpi would be a very low res scan of an original neg.

72dpi ???

72dpi ???

Here is the celco site for REAL dpi values,

http://www.celco.com/FormatResolutionTable4K.asp

Quote: [65MM 15 PERF (IMAX/OMNIMAX) 2.772 X 2.072 1.34 4096 X 3060 2048 X 1530]

4096/2.772 = 1477 dpi

Someone before said IMAX is scanned at 8K then reduced to 4K for their DI and filmout (I don't know if that is true, but if they use a Bayer chip in their scanner they might do that).

Are you measuring the dpi per inch of the original film, or from some other reference in ratio?

IMAX is 2.8*1.9 inches. At 72 dpi that would be 137 by 202 pixels. The 70mm scan is also out of focus.

I don't mean to be too critical since your work on your site is awesome! But those numbers are totally out there. When I shoot 6x7 I scan it at 4000dpi and there is still detail in the sharpest chromes at that level.

Firstly! This is not a IMAX or 70mm film vs RED Thread... Lets get this straight. Nothing beats 70mm!!!!! in motion picture land... (actually the 67 Phantom comes close)
This is mearly showing a hi res scanned image from 70mm film compared to a RED 4k image. Nothing more.
The 70mm has beautiful tones, pin sharp (except for my short focus areas) nice soft grain... everything you expect from NEG.

The 70mm film was scanned @ 300 dpi, equivalent to 11,000pixels @ 300dpi. The actual file size for this 70mm scan is 282meg. (for a 4 color poster print)
The 4k RED file (16bit) is 48 meg. So the 70mm scan has 234meg more information.
I have upresed the RED image to the same dimensions as this 70mm scan and thats what you see before you.

So anyway.... this not not a RED / IMAX shoot out. It's just showing you the difference and how RED 4K stands up with Imax in the clarity & resolution department.

Lets not turn this into something it's not.. Imax is still king,

Thanks guys

Still nothing can beat Baraka (8K film scan), no The Dark Knight or Inception, also RED1 4.5K or EPIC 5K.

Just play BR Baraka vs any BR of those mentioned Nolan's movies or many BR of movies that were shot on R1 or even Epic tests...

Maybe upcoming Sony F65 projected on 4K Sony digital theater at NAB could tell us more about what they did with 8K sensor size in that way...

Looking forward to the following NAB reports from FD Times, The Finner Knows Best, Studio Daily, Engadget, Wired, etc,...

Baraka BD is not reference at all. Oversharpened and far from what you can do with a 8K scan on BD. Same goes for "Dark Knight".

Michel,

without something serious to elaborate using facts it looks that probably you don't know what you are talking about...

Can someone at Red please send Mark Toia his Epic M. He is a genius, but right now he seems to be in limbo waiting for his Epic. LOL. He's so bored he's posting comparisons between stills. I love you Mark, we need to get an Epic in your hands ASAP. Ha Ha

First off, thanks for posting this.

I would just like to point out, though, that saying you scanned the neg at 300dpi is pretty much meaningless, unless you literally mean dots per inch of negative. As was pointed out, that isn't a very high res scan. Perhaps you mean 300dpi at some arbitrary print size?

What are the actual pixel dimensions of your film scan? Those are the only meaningful numbers when talking about a digital file.

I do know. I have both discs and if you can't see the sharpening issues, well, have another look. Or do I need to post stills from the discs? They are available on the net anyway:

Stuff like this speaks a clear language: http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u98/adzez/Baraka/53f6a97a.png , http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u98/adzez/Baraka/35f52f91.png, http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u98/adzez/TDK/d73623f8.png

Um.... Baraka DVD is poor - over-sharpened and showed nasty aliasing on some scenes....
