  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

3.5K and 4.5k for scarlet dragon?

I'm wondering why we don't have intermediate resolutions on the scarlet dragon. Like for the epic. Like 4.5k@6:1 for example. Is there some technical limitation? If not, it's not something that would encroach on the epic. That would be very useful.

Hi can someone confirm if this is still is the case, even with newer firmware? I have my Scarlet in for upgrade and I was explicitly told by a tech assistant at red over the phone at some point that I'd be able to choose intermediary resolutions on it. Quite disappointed if it's not the case...

I upgraded my Scarlet Dragon to Epic Dragon, but at this point there are no .5K resolutions on Scarlet Dragon.
I don't think it's a technical limitation. I think it's more of a strategical limitation. I don't know for sure.

But Jarred hinted that Scarlet Dragon is not forgotten in his thread to the indie/Scarlet users after Weapon was announced.

There are no .5 resolutions on fw6.0.23. I can select 6k, 5k, 4k, 3k, 2k (with FF or 2:1, HD, WS and 2xAnamorphic/6:5).

I don't know, but they didn't do 4.5kWS for Scarlet-X either.

Were you just hoping that 4.5 & 3.5 would have higher fps or lower compression ratio? Not sure what benefit is, given that Scarlet-D has 5k FF. 5.5k WS would be cool, as it's a bump in resolution and the most sensor area still coverable by the typical s35 image circle.

4.5k on Scarlet is a different thing, as it would go higher than max resolution (for motion). Never say never, RED is obviously testing and exploring, as we have seen with that glitched 5k-Scarlet. But only doing it with WS? I don't think that will happen, people will start asking for those "few more lines" and bring up the whole argumentation with math again. ;)

Yes, maybe it allows a few more fps and slightly lower compression ratios. It could also increase the runtime for your REDMAGs a bit. There are some good reasons for those resolutions, otherwise they wouldn't exist on EPIC.

True... Forgot about Runtime...

As for Scarlet-X/4.5kWS; the only reason I (still) mention it is because that was R1mx's max, so I've always thought it'd be a good fit for ScarX when they phased out the R1 (if its possible). As for "WS-only?", RED/Jarred have said a few times that the rows are easier to process than the amount of columns (or is it vice versa? Taller is more processor heavy), which is why WS modes usually have higher FPS and/or better compression than their ANA counterparts or lower-res 16:9 counterparts, even when those modes have less overall resolution and/or use less sensor area.

As for MX development, I think RED have moved on and are focused more on Dragon-based development... Still fun to think about though.

With all the new additions to the Red family, I wonder have we learned how to teach some old dogs new tricks?
3.5K and 4.5K for scarlets, MX and Dragon???

Since RED have never posted in this thread, I doubt they ever will (especially now that Scarlet-X/Epic-X/MX is officially EOL, with no more new units being made/sold).

I still think that at the very least R1mx's 4.5k/25p mode (which, if memory serves, was actually 4480x1920 2.33:1 and not the contemporary 4608x1920 2.4:1 like you'd expect), could be done on Scarlet-X from a pixel pushing/data throughput standpoint. If there's some other reason why it technically/technologically couldn't be done, I would still love to hear it.

Something tells me there just wasn't enough need for it, so RED didn't want to waste the firmware-engineers' time. Same with the burst modes and pseudo-4k-HDRx they were originally talking about... Truth is, we're two generations (and an entirely new entry-level camera-line) away from MX nowadays...

I get it... But now that we are so far along, no need for anyone to get wrinkled about scarlets going to the max! C'mon RED set her free.....
I'm bet there is more....

Haha, I understand what you're saying, but for that same reason there's no point/incentive for RED to make the Scarlet-X more compelling... Like what would RED gain?

(...but, yeah I'd totally use 4.5k/24fps if it was available.)

RED is known to drop stuff like this in the firmware. Makes for good brand loyalty.
Never know...
